Tang Xian

Tang Xian is a Heaven's Expanse matriarch, the estranged wife of Shangguan Tianyue, and the mother of the three Shangguan sisters. After leaving her husband, she raises Shangguan Bing'er in Heavenly Bow City and conceals both their greater family connection and her own formidable cultivation. Her early judgment of Zhou Weiqing helps turn him from a frightened prospective son-in-law into a more disciplined control fighter; years later, she becomes the final family obstacle to his proposed marriage to all three of her daughters.

Biography

A hidden matriarch tests Bing'er's suitor

Tang first appears after discovering that Bing'er is no longer a virgin and learning how Zhou's Heavenly Jewels awakened. Normally gentle toward her daughter, she arrives at the Zhou household in a fury, demands that Zhou answer for the harm, immobilizes Bing'er, and tests him with a strike powerful enough to threaten a serious injury. The scene is partly intimidation rather than an execution attempt: Tang wants to vent her anger and judge the young man Bing'er has chosen, and she deliberately avoids using lethal force. Bing'er's willingness to die with Zhou, Zhou's promise to take lifelong responsibility, and mediation by his mother Ling Zihan persuade Tang to hear him out. Ling's presence also reconnects Tang with a family she and her husband once saved at Dragonpit Riverside two decades earlier. (Chapter 27)

Examining Zhou's Alexandrite Cat's Eye changes Tang's assessment from reluctant tolerance to cautious approval. She identifies his unknown sixth Attribute as Time through the Absolute Delay Skill, explains why that Skill remains effective across differences in cultivation, and warns that six rare Attributes cannot compensate for insufficient training. Her consent removes a major emotional barrier for Bing'er, who has grown up treating Tang as her only close family after being taken away from her father at the age of two. Tang does not immediately arrange a marriage, but she acknowledges Zhou as a suitable future son-in-law and tells Bing'er to watch whether he remains worthy of that trust. (Chapters 27, 34)

Tang and Bing'er live modestly despite Bing'er's new noble title. Tang refuses to leave their small commoner home, tends vegetables with her daughter, and prepares Zhou for his departure to study Consolidating Equipment. She warns him not to let scroll-making consume the cultivation demanded by his exceptional Jewels and urges him to collect multiple control Skills so that their recovery intervals can overlap. She then gives him the Ring of Concealment as Bing'er's dowry, allowing him to disguise the visible Attribute of his Elemental Jewel, but attaches a direct condition: hurting Bing'er means forfeiting both the ring and his life. The gift therefore combines protection, acceptance, and continuing maternal scrutiny. (Chapter 34)

Counsel that follows Zhou into battle

Tang spends much of Zhou's subsequent rise offstage, but her instruction has durable consequences. He follows her control-centered advice when choosing Spatial Shackles, repeatedly recalls her explanation of Absolute Delay's absolute effect, and uses layered restrictions to decide tournament and military battles that raw power alone would not win. The Ring of Concealment likewise lets him present himself as a single-Attribute Jewel Master, preserve the secrecy of his Alexandrite Cat's Eye, and mislead opponents or investigators even after his cultivation becomes much stronger. Her early warning that his six Attributes would begin to support self-created fusion and true self-protection around the six-Jewel level is vindicated when he reaches that stage. Tang's absence also shapes her daughters unevenly. Bing'er grows up under her direct care, while Shangguan Xue'er and Shangguan Fei'er are raised at Heaven's Expanse Palace without remembering a mother's affection. Tang eventually returns to the palace, but continues a prolonged cold war with Tianyue over the conduct that caused her to leave. Her disapproval remains powerful enough that their daughters and the Shangguan brothers conceal the fact that all three sisters have fallen in love with Zhou and that marriage preparations are advancing. Three daughters, one marriage, and an old grievance

When Bing'er returns from the XuanTian expedition, Tang rushes to embrace the daughter she has raised and favors most openly. The reunion immediately gives way to confrontation: learning that Zhou intends to marry all three sisters makes Tang feel that one man is taking advantage of every daughter she struggled to bear and protect. She attacks him with eighteen Crimson Inferno Palms, then demands a meaningful answer rather than accepting his submissive greetings. When Zhou says he will meet any condition in exchange for their hands, Tang orders him to defeat Tianyue—the husband she has long wanted to punish but cannot overpower herself. Her demand becomes the basis of a formal endurance match approved by Shangguan Tianyang, with Xue'er's marriage and palace succession at stake. (Chapters 258–260)

Zhou ultimately appears to beat Tianyue into the ground. Tang abandons the rules at once, kicks Zhou away, and tends Tianyue with unmistakable fear and tenderness. When her husband apologizes, claims that separation has been more painful than his wounds, and threatens to refuse treatment without forgiveness, the resentment she has contained for years breaks; she embraces him and ends their cold war. The narration later reveals that Zhou and Tianyue planned to use a convincing injury to reopen that relationship, and that most of Tianyue's apparent final damage was self-inflicted, although the combat leading to it was genuine. Tang is therefore manipulated at the moment of reconciliation, but her concern and forgiveness are her own choices. With the old barrier broken and Zhou having met the imposed test, the family proceeds to settle the three sisters' betrothal. (Chapter 261)

Appearance and personality

Tang appears to be an exquisite middle-aged woman, yet looks seven or eight years younger than Ling Zihan even though Ling knew her as an older sister two decades earlier. She retains an exceptional beauty in simple clothing, and her laughter is described as making her surroundings pale by comparison. At home she dresses plainly enough to tend a small vegetable garden, giving no outward sign that Bing'er initially recognizes of either her age or her power. (Chapters 27, 34)

Her temperament combines fierce impulsiveness with close observation. Tang can move from a death threat to delighted technical analysis when new evidence changes her judgment, and anger leads her to strike before negotiating when she learns of Zhou's plan to marry all three daughters. That volatility does not erase restraint or accountability: her first attack on Zhou is a deliberate test, she regrets using too much force in their later confrontation, and she accepts the outcome of the condition she herself sets. Pride keeps her estranged from Tianyue for years, while enduring love becomes visible the instant she believes him gravely hurt. (Chapters 27, 34, 258–261)

Tang's strongest loyalty is maternal. She is protective of every daughter but not wholly impartial, doting most intensely on Bing'er after raising her alone. She evaluates Zhou less by ceremony than by whether his conduct can keep her daughters safe, first recognizing his potential, later condemning his divided affections, and finally yielding only after he demonstrates both power and willingness to bind himself to the family. Abilities and cultivation

Nine-Jewel Fire cultivation

Tang is a nine-Jeweled Heavenly Jewel Master whose demonstrated Elemental Attribute is Fire. Even before her rank is stated, she releases an aura more oppressive than any Zhou has encountered at the time, prevents Bing'er from moving, and changes the direction of a palm strike after Zhou Blinks away. Her later rank explains that early disparity, but the supplied chapters do not identify her Physical Jewel alignment, list all of her Stored Skills, or establish a breakthrough beyond nine Jewels. Crimson Inferno Palm

The Crimson Inferno Palm is Tang's supreme internal technique. It compresses Fire Attribute energy until her hands blaze red-gold, then delivers the accumulated force through direct palm strikes. She unleashes eighteen consecutive blows against Zhou, and the narration says the technique can melt gold and steel; even the Heavenly Emperor Shangguan Tianyue would not willingly receive it without defense. Tang initially believes Zhou to be at nine Jewels and does not use her complete power, but the sequence still shows the technique's practical limitation against a superior defense: Zhou, already a Heavenly King with extraordinary physical and energy protection, takes every strike without damage or even scorched clothing. Jewel-system knowledge and tactical instruction

Tang has expert knowledge of Heavenly Beasts, Saint Attributes, Stored Skills, and combat timing. From a description and one demonstration she identifies Absolute Delay, the Three-Eyed Dragon Cat that supplied it, and Zhou's Time Attribute. She explains both the Skill's universal one-second effect at his initial rank and its tactical compatibility with arrows or other techniques. Her broader doctrine is to chain control Skills across their individual recovery periods so that a stronger opponent never regains initiative. This is instruction rather than a claim that Tang personally possesses each Skill she analyzes, but Zhou's later battles repeatedly validate the method. (Chapters 27, 34, 44, 50, 74, 81, 87, 170)

Relationships

• Shangguan Bing'er: Tang takes Bing'er away from Heaven's Expanse Palace as a small child and raises her in modest circumstances, making their bond especially close. She first accepts Zhou because she respects Bing'er's choice, and years later runs past everyone else to embrace her when she returns.
• Shangguan Xue'er and Shangguan Fei'er: Tang is their mother, but her departure with Bing'er leaves the two older sisters to grow up without remembering maternal affection. Protectiveness toward them drives her opposition to Zhou marrying all three and her insistence that he pass a family test.
• Shangguan Tianyue: Tang leaves Tianyue over his conduct and resists his attempts at reconciliation after returning to the palace. Believing him critically injured strips away that defensive anger, and she forgives him, unaware that he and Zhou planned the final display to help end their estrangement.
• Zhou Weiqing: Tang begins as a threatening judge, becomes his early technical adviser and prospective mother-in-law, then opposes the breadth of his marriage plan. She accepts him only after he submits to her anger and fulfills the combat condition attached to her daughters' betrothal.
• Shangguan Tianyang: Tang respects the Palace Lord enough to halt a public family quarrel at his command. He turns her demand that Zhou beat Tianyue into a formal test and leaves the final marriage approval partly in her hands.
• Ling Zihan: Tang and Tianyue saved Ling as a girl and stayed with her family for more than a month. Their reunion at the Zhou household allows Ling to mediate Tang's first confrontation with Zhou.
