Ultris's Wooden Token
Ultris's Wooden Token is an otherwise unnamed protective artifact that Ultris arranges to send to Neo Hargraves in the event of his death. Its known function is narrow but crucial: it hides its bearer from Apollyon's attempts to locate him through the Fate of people he has encountered.
History
Ultris's contingency gift
Before Neo leaves the sect to visit the surrounding cities, Elizabeth retrieves a wooden token from subspace and places it in his hand. She does not know its construction or formal name, but explains that Ultris once used it to hide from Apollyon while he was weak. Although Fate is harder for Apollyon to manipulate in the True Blessed Lands, the token is meant to stop him from tracing Neo indirectly through someone Neo has met. (Chapter 807)
The gift reaches Neo through a precise contingency chain. Ultris gives it to Paul before his death and asks that it be delivered if necessary. Paul passes it to Elizabeth, who completes the transfer. For Neo, receiving a protective measure planned by the dead Ultris forces him to confront both Ultris's preparation and the finality of his death. (Chapter 807)
Neo accepts the token and follows Elizabeth's direction to keep it on his person. The next day he slips it inside his clothes before leaving the residence, which is its latest direct appearance. The source does not show it being destroyed, returned, or transferred again. (Chapter 808)
