Henry Hargraves

Henry Hargraves is Neo Hargraves's older brother and the head of Hargraves Corporation. Publicly unable to awaken his God Blood, he secretly wields power borrowed through a contract with Velkaria. He is also the current reincarnation of The One Above All, whose sacrificial battle against Yaleth permanently damaged his later lives.

Biography

The abrasive protector behind Hargraves Corporation

Henry intercepts Neo after the Mermaid Country crisis by evacuating a station and arriving in person. He recognizes his supposedly amnesiac younger brother immediately, notices that Neo is starving, and explains that he has already stopped the international pursuit by demanding proof and threatening retaliation against Mermaid Country. His language is insulting and his methods excessive, but his first priority is food, safety, and getting Neo to the Demigod Academy on time. (Chapters 27–29)

Neo lies that Amelia de Beaufort is pregnant to prevent Henry from attacking her. Henry sees through the lie because he knows his brother's mannerisms, yet lets it stand after recognizing that Neo is trying to protect someone. This pattern continues at the Academy: Henry visits with meals, complains when the school will not let him stay, and uses his reputation and wealth to deter God Clans that might otherwise target Neo. Protection, not politeness, is the stable meaning behind his hostility. (Chapters 29–30, 51, and 124)

Hidden strength and the brothers' past

Henry manages dangers far beyond an ordinary businessman. He takes custody of the sealed Replica of Poseidon's Trident, works with Hargraves research staff to convert it into exoskeleton serum, and explains that its power has been sealed because Neo's body can initially withstand only five percent. When Neo faces political or military threats, Henry dispatches agents, controls publicity, and recognizes Neo's authority as leader of the Hades Clan. These actions let Neo gain power while Henry absorbs the surrounding institutional risk. (Chapters 185–203 and 333–334)

The brothers' childhood explains both Henry's fierce loyalty and his secrecy. Henry was physically weak and developed an inferiority complex toward the healthier Neo, but after their parents disappeared during Window #8477, the two children survived together under the wreckage. Later, Henry tells Neo that their parents were reincarnations of Hades and Persephone Hargraves who recovered divine memories at death. He conceals that Velkaria killed them and that his own contract, not only parental rescue, preserved the brothers. (Chapters 269, 341, and 345–346)

Finding their parents and raising Layla

When Sphinx's clues identify George and Mira as the current reincarnations of the brothers' parents, Henry investigates them within minutes. He discovers that their apparent romantic betrayal is a misunderstanding caused by George's secret training and Mira's fear of monsters after the Labyrinth. Neo warns that accepting them as family will strengthen the reincarnation curse, but Henry refuses permanent distance. He chooses at least friendship and enters the training center to reconcile them while Neo initially hesitates outside. (Chapters 370 and 372–375)

Henry's choice rebuilds the family in practice. He brings George and Mira into the Hargraves home and celebrates the first birthday of their daughter, Layla, as her older brother. When their parents later die, he conducts the funeral and devotes himself to raising Layla despite running his company and knowing his own life is short. He becomes strict in Mira's place and indulgent in George's, then asks Amelia to assume responsibility when his curse finally takes him. (Chapters 388, 544, 567–569)

The One Above All and Velkaria's contract

The hidden history identifies The One Above All as Henry's previous reincarnation. In that life, he fought Yaleth with only minutes remaining, became a Void God during the battle, and created the Divinity Flames of Abnegation. Killing Yaleth saved humanity as a species but also killed uncorrupted people who could not be evacuated. The Divinity burned the One Above All's body, soul, and Seed of Existence, leaving damage that reincarnation could not repair in a single later life. Henry's sickly birth and shortened lifespan are consequences of that sacrifice, not evidence that he personally remembers every prior-life experience. (Chapters 546 and 569)

Velkaria enters Henry after his parents fatally injure her in Window #8477. She threatens the brothers, and Henry accepts a survival contract: he will conceal and avoid harming her, while she relinquishes all her power to him for as long as he lives. The arrangement makes him as strong as a Stage-3 being and repairs his outward health, but it remains borrowed strength; Henry never awakens his own God Blood. He also loathes Velkaria for killing his parents even as years of shared existence make her care for him. (Chapters 568–570)

Sebastian's betrayal and Henry's death

After an attempt on Layla's life nearly kills Amelia, Henry traces the assassin to Sir Sebastian, the butler who raised both brothers. Sebastian reveals his leadership in the Temple of Void, responsibility for summoning Velkaria, and repeated attempts to murder Neo in order to make Henry go berserk. Henry loses control, devastates five countries, and exposes a fighting style associated with The One Above All. He refuses to turn back time to conceal it because he knows he would punish Sebastian the same way again. (Chapter 568)

The revelation provokes a proposed crusade, but public evidence of the One Above All's sacrifice divides the God Clans and reframes Henry as a protector forced into an impossible choice. None of that repairs his Seed. Ten years later he dies in a hospital after thanking Amelia and entrusting Layla to her; Neo is still absent. Velkaria, newly free, remains by the grave and resolves to wait for Henry's reincarnation so that she can apologize for killing his parents. (Chapters 568–570 and 715)

Henry in the final history

The reconstructed final history gives the family a different beginning. Hades and Persephone marry and have a son whom they name Henry Hargraves. Later, within Neo's Cosmos, Henry is an Overseer responsible for a Sector. He forms a company to distribute administrative rights and recruit talented people, and his Sector begins outperforming its peers. The resulting competition pushes other Overseers to adopt the same model, extending Henry's corporate instincts from a continental business to cosmic administration. (Chapters 821 and 826)

Velkaria eventually arrives expecting Henry's hatred and offers the apology she had waited to make. Henry accepts it, then brusquely tells her to leave his office because he is busy. The scene connects final-history Henry to the old conflict without giving a technical explanation of soul or memory continuity across reconstruction. He later attends Jack and Layla's wedding, where the sight of him helps stir the buried emotions of Neo's distant incarnation even before Neo consciously recovers the Hargraves name. (Chapters 826, 833, and 839)

Appearance and personality

Henry is a very handsome blond man with a scar running from his right eye to his lower jaw. He first appears in a black suit, smoking, and cigarettes remain part of his adult presentation. His childhood body was frail enough to inspire an inferiority complex, but the contract with Velkaria changes him into a healthy and confident young man. That visible recovery conceals both his unawakened state and the unrepaired damage to his Seed of Existence. (Chapters 27, 269, and 568–569)

He is profane, intimidating, impatient, and proud. Henry expresses affection by feeding people, solving their problems, threatening their enemies, and complaining about the work they create for him. He can read Neo's lies and respects private spaces he could forcibly inspect. His refusal to explain every sacrifice makes him look colder than he is, while his habitual control breaks into catastrophic violence when Sebastian admits to targeting both Neo and Layla. (Chapters 27–30, 188–194, 345–346, and 568)

Family is his central vulnerability and source of purpose. Henry risks the reincarnation curse to meet his parents, becomes both parental figures for Layla, and spends his last years trying to remain alive for her. He is not sentimentally demonstrative: even on his deathbed he tries to speak normally, and in the final history he answers Velkaria's emotional apology with acceptance followed by an order to leave. His care is clearest through responsibility rather than confession. (Chapters 372–375, 567–569, and 826)

Powers and limitations

Unawakened God Blood

Henry cannot awaken his God Blood in the life first followed by the novel. Charlotte believes he deliberately avoids trying because the brothers survived a Void Window and awakening could also awaken dangerous Void Affinity. Later omniscient narration provides a deeper correction: damage inflicted on the One Above All's Seed of Existence leaves Henry defective, unable to awaken, and limited to a mortal-scale natural lifespan. His displayed strength therefore should not be recorded as a normal demigod advancement. (Chapters 27, 341, and 569)

Velkaria's borrowed power

The symbiotic contract gives Henry access to all of Velkaria's powers while he lives and places her voice inside his head. It immediately makes him as strong as a Stage-3 being, lets him detect extraordinary intrusions, and supports combat powerful enough to defeat Senators and repel a God Clan's forces. The power is explicitly borrowed: Henry is riding on Velkaria's strength, and the contract ends when he dies. Long exposure to a Void Entity also shortens his already damaged lifespan. (Chapters 345, 544, and 568–570)

Intent and combat

Henry can release Intent so overwhelming that post-Shadow-Trial Neo nearly dies from sensing it before Henry pulls it back. During his rampage against Sebastian, observers recognize the fighting style of the One Above All, and Henry can turn back time but chooses not to erase what occurred. The story withholds a detailed catalogue of named techniques, so these feats establish dangerous breadth without proving that every power of the previous incarnation is permanently Henry's own. (Chapters 345 and 568)

The One Above All's Divinity

In the previous life, the One Above All becomes a Void God mid-battle and creates Flames of Abnegation. The Divinity burns the user's body, soul, and Seed of Existence to produce the strength needed to kill Yaleth. It succeeds, but its cost persists through reincarnation and requires several lives to heal naturally. The technique is therefore both Henry's greatest inherited power-history and the direct cause of his inability to live out the current life. (Chapters 546 and 569)

Wealth, research, and authority

Hargraves Corporation gives Henry a second form of power independent of combat. He can mobilize researchers, produce True Soul Weapons and exoskeleton procedures, influence governments, defend the Hades Clan, and dispatch specialists across continents. In the final history he applies this organizational ability to an Overseer's Sector. These are resources and offices rather than formal personal ranks, but they explain why Henry is dangerous even before his supernatural strength becomes public. (Chapters 27, 186–203, 334, and 826)

Neo Hargraves

Henry and Neo are older and younger brothers. Henry knows the original Neo's habits well enough to detect the transmigrator's lies, yet he interprets the changes as growth or amnesia and protects him instead of forcing answers. Neo gradually trusts Henry with weapons, crises, and their parents' reincarnations, but both conceal burdens to protect the other. Neo's long absence at Henry's death becomes one of the deepest wounds left in Amelia and Layla. (Chapters 27–30, 183–203, 269, 345–346, 372–375, and 715)

Velkaria

Velkaria begins as the parents' killer and a wounded entity who coerces Henry into a survival contract. Henry uses her power but hates her and conceals her even from Neo. She slowly admires his fearlessness and loyalty, then regrets what she did only after years inside him. His death frees her, but she chooses to wait rather than leave. In the final history, Henry accepts the apology she once believed he would never hear. (Chapters 345, 544, 568–570, and 826)

Layla and Amelia de Beaufort

Henry becomes Layla's primary guardian after their parents die and gives her both discipline and affection. Amelia helps raise the child despite her strained relationship with Henry and Neo, then protects Layla from assassination at nearly fatal cost. Henry trusts Amelia with Layla before dying, and Amelia's later anger partly comes from watching him wait for a brother who never returned. Their household is therefore built from conflict, obligation, and shared care rather than an uncomplicated friendship. (Chapters 567–569 and 715)

Hades and Persephone Hargraves

Hades and Persephone are Henry and Neo's divine parents, repeatedly reincarnated under a curse. Henry first remembers them as ordinary parents who recover divine memories only at death, then recognizes George and Mira as their current lives and chooses to approach them despite the danger. The final history gives Hades and Persephone the chance to raise a son named Henry without repeating the Window and curse-driven separation shown earlier. (Chapters 269, 345–346, 370–375, 567–568, and 821)

Sir Sebastian

Sebastian raises the brothers as a trusted butler while secretly serving the Temple of Void. His role in summoning Velkaria, killing the parents, repeatedly murdering Neo, and targeting Layla turns Henry's surrogate parent into the architect of the family's suffering. Henry's destruction of him is both an act of protection and the moment his restraint collapses so completely that five countries are caught in the aftermath. (Chapter 568)

Henry takes family custody of the Replica of Poseidon's Trident after Neo brings it home. He does not become its owner or regular wielder: he evaluates Neo's proposal, entrusts the weapon to Hargraves research staff, and helps convert it into exoskeleton serum that is incorporated into Neo's body. His office, company, and Velkaria contract are sources of authority or power rather than personal artifacts. (Chapters 185–203)
