Elijah Lockhart Greaves is the pale butler of Virya's hidden estate and Kai Tylenn's principal instructor in physical conditioning, weapons, combat awareness, survival, and Shadow Magic. Severe and secretive, he prepares Kai for situations in which magic fails or help never arrives. His departure leaves Kai with a spatial ring and Guide reference book, while cult journals discovered years later turn the missing teacher into an unresolved lead. (Chapters 12–352)

Biography

Butler and combat master

Elijah first appears at Virya's secluded estate, materializing at her summons and vanishing before Kai can track his movement. As steward, he negotiates Alana Tylenn's produce deliveries, drafts supply arrangements, and lends her a spatial bag. Once Virya accepts Kai as a pupil, Elijah adjusts clothing for him and takes charge of a punishing routine built around Running, Swimming, Awareness, and Mana Sense. He increases distance whenever Kai adapts and uses surprise pebbles throughout the day to force attention into a persistent habit, leaving the boy bruised and exhausted but increasingly difficult to surprise. (Chapters 12–18)

After Kai reaches Orange, Elijah adds weapons and magical combat to the curriculum. He argues that a mage can be deprived of mana and that a blade may be faster and more reliable than a spell, then demonstrates blue fire that withholds its heat until it crosses a line in the sand. The flame melts sand but chars the wooden practice sword, prompting his warning that the technique requires an appropriate mana blade. Elijah drills sword, spear, knife, quarterstaff, and bow fundamentals before advancing to live danger. In Veeryd he makes Kai confront awakened beasts and survive with limited support, intervening against a second predator but deliberately allowing the lesson to carry real risk. Lessons under secrecy

Elijah's later instruction becomes a contest of restraint, deception, and layered magic. During sword spars he limits his physical attributes to Kai's range but uses skill efficiency and experience to maintain the advantage. He darkens the field, emerges from shadows behind Kai, disrupts casting with gusts, and leaves false shadow figures to draw attacks. Kai counters with Mana Sense, mist, and an Earth pulse, yet cannot divide enough attention to penetrate Elijah's shroud and answer his speed. Elijah treats those defeats as preparation for stronger opponents, withholding praise until Kai demonstrates judgment rather than merely power. (Chapters 79–101)

Although his manner remains cold, Elijah delays the estate's departure and gives Kai the first spatial ring he received when he was about Kai's age. He disguises the artifact as rough silver, stocks it with Kai's sword and Theodora's potions, and warns that displaying or selling it would be dangerous. After Virya, Elijah, and Theodora remove the estate overnight, Kai finds another concealed gift inside: Initiation to the Mysteries of the Guide, a book Elijah had previously kept from him and which includes warnings that some knowledge can alter Guide rewards. Sanctuary crisis and later clues

Elijah does not return during the Hidden Sanctuary crisis, but the material and habits he leaves behind remain part of Kai's survival. The Kai's Spatial Ring holds compact weapons, medicine, books, and valuables without adding their weight, while Elijah's insistence on weapons, vigilance, wilderness movement, and fighting under disadvantage remains the standard by which Kai judges later mistakes. After two years trapped in the Sanctuary, Kai imagines Elijah suppressing approval of his progress; the thought makes clear that the absent teacher's expectations have become internal discipline rather than an instruction Kai can still receive directly. The first external clue appears in the Intrepid Diary, where Kai finds the name Elijah Lockhart Greaves in an encrypted list. Later decryption identifies the writer as a fugitive from the Stygian Cult who investigated collaborators and possible people who could help him hide, including an Elijah sought in the archipelago. Additional cult journals repeat the name, while another reconstructed line instead gives Elijah Valoren Lochwyn. They contain a standing order to find him but no reason. Kai and Valela Hightide judge the context too specific to be coincidence and begin seeking information through the House of Echoes, but Elijah's whereabouts and the relationship between the two full names remain unresolved through Chapter 352. Appearance and personality

Elijah is repeatedly described as pale, with pale hands, thin lips, and a larger, hard-muscled frame that makes Kai's farewell embrace feel like holding a trunk made of metal wire. The source does not establish his hair color, eye color, exact age, or apparent nationality; years later Kai judges that he might be twenty-four or a century old and cannot confidently identify the significance of his accent. Elijah is formal, sardonic, proud, secretive, and relentlessly demanding. He enjoys provoking Kai and disguises concern as criticism, yet he monitors dangerous lessons, delays his own departure, chooses personally significant gifts, and wants his pupil to succeed. Private thoughts reveal resentment toward former friends he considers traitors and a determination to return home and reclaim what is his, but the corpus never explains the betrayal or object of that claim. Skills, magic, and the Guide

Physical ability and weapons

Elijah is proficient with swords and teaches the working fundamentals of swords, spears, knives, quarterstaffs, and bows. In sparring he can match his Strength and Perception to Kai's level while retaining superior timing, efficiency, and technique, and he moves quickly enough to attack from unexpected angles or dispose of objects hundreds of meters away. He also tracks awakened beasts and follows Kai unseen through Veeryd. The source never supplies Elijah's race grade, profession, attributes, weapon-skill names, levels, or specializations, so his exact standing cannot be derived from performance alone. Shadow, fire, and air magic

Shadow is Elijah's most consistent element. He can coalesce into view, disappear into darkness, leap from a shadow behind an opponent, obscure a battlefield, cover a blade, and leave a false silhouette that receives Kai's strike. Mana Sense can track aspects of his movement if given enough attention, and an Earth pulse can reveal a position, but Kai cannot sustain those counters while also answering Elijah's attacks. Elijah also surrounds a sword with blue fire whose heat he selectively suppresses, then releases enough energy to melt sand; the wooden focus is destroyed, establishing a material limitation. Instruction, surveillance, and survival

Elijah trains by engineering pressure rather than explaining every solution. Pebble ambushes force Awareness to remain active during ordinary tasks, escalating physical work builds endurance, multi-weapon drills prepare for lost equipment, and Veeryd exercises combine tracking, concealment, resource limits, and genuine predators. He watches closely enough to prevent an immediate death without eliminating the danger needed for the Guide to recognize a real ordeal. That method is effective but deliberately harsh: Kai is bruised, sleep-deprived, injured, and sometimes unaware of how near Elijah is. Guide knowledge and limits

Elijah possesses restricted knowledge about professions, feats, skill acquisition, and how foreknowledge can affect Guide rewards. That makes him a knowledgeable gatekeeper, not evidence of a named Guide profession. His exact status remains hidden even from Kai after five years of instruction. The later suggestion that the estate's residents were at least fourth-circle mages is Valela's conditional inference from Kai's account, not a confirmed rank, and the Stygian Cult's order to find Elijah establishes danger around his past without identifying his allegiance or powers. Kai Tylenn: Elijah is Kai's harshest long-term teacher, responsible for much of his conditioning, weapons practice, combat awareness, and wilderness preparation. Their exchanges are adversarial and sarcastic, but Elijah delays leaving, gives Kai an irreplaceable ring and Guide book, and remains the standard against which Kai measures his own discipline. Kai later chooses to search for him for personal reasons as well as for information about the cult. (Chapters 14–103, 241–245, and 347–352)
Virya: Elijah manages Virya's estate, appears immediately when summoned, carries out her arrangements, and accepts her limits on how much outside help Kai may receive. He is deferential without being characterized as an ordinary servant, and he leaves with her when the entire estate is removed from the archipelago. Theodora: Theodora and Elijah share responsibility for Kai's education, with her alchemy and botany lessons complementing his combat curriculum.
