Theodora

Theodora, usually called Dora, is the resident alchemist and cook at Virya's estate and one of Kai's three principal childhood teachers. Her lessons join botanical observation, mana control, medicine, elemental magic, and the Guide into a practical education. After she leaves the archipelago, the recipes, notes, and unusually potent elixirs she prepared continue to preserve Kai's life and shape his standards for both craft and care.

Biography

Alchemy teacher and caregiver

Theodora is mentioned when Kai and Alana Tylenn first petition Virya, but she meets him in person after Elijah Lockhart Greaves's punishing physical assessment. She gives the exhausted child a restorative concoction, jokes about dosing Elijah's tea if he mistreats him, and immediately folds work, food, and instruction together. Because Virya has offered only a trial, Dora tests Kai through botany rather than reassurance alone; his methodical study of her silver hibiscus convinces her that his curiosity can become an alchemist's investigative discipline, while her encouragement gives him a refuge from Elijah's deliberately abrasive pressure. (Chapters 12–17)

Once Kai remains at the estate, Dora turns that promise into foundations rather than flashy magic. She makes him harvest and process mundane plants, teaches him to read health and purpose in their mana flow, and integrates Elijah's Awareness attacks into the garden exercises so both teachers' methods reinforce each other. After Kai opens his First Seal, she explains Guide customization, delayed experience notifications, the personal skill archive, and the pain of discarding a skill; she then requires Apothecary and Processing Plants before allowing his first alchemical brew. Her insistence that roadside remedies and fine control precede precious ingredients makes Kai capable of producing useful medicine instead of merely imitating recipes. (Chapters 18–22)

Advanced magic and craft

As Kai's status and interests expand, Dora remains the person who turns theory into safe practice. She treats the mental shock after he impulsively discards an Orange skill, explains that losing a skill above one's race grade can overwhelm the mind, and directs him to Virya when his question about languages of power touches secrets she will not disclose. Her care does not erase standards: the same household warmth supports increasingly difficult study of mainland plants, medical diagnosis, elemental mana, and specialized alchemy, allowing Kai to progress without mistaking affection for permission to be reckless. (Chapters 81–92)

Near the end of their life at the estate, Dora completes Practical Potions from the Baquaire Archipelago, signing it as Theodora Etinam and giving Kai a private copy that preserves his joking recipe names and acknowledges his testing. She will not publish the most advanced work because attention could expose the household. When Virya decides they must leave, Dora supports the departure she and Virya had earlier chosen for Elijah's sake, stocks Kai's spatial ring with a casket containing two doses of each of her seven strongest recipes, leaves food and a candid farewell letter, and affirms that remaining with his family is the right choice even though separation ends her direct supervision. Loss of the Sanctuary

Dora's preparation becomes active protection long after she is gone. During the Vastaire conflict and the hidden Sanctuary, Kai finally draws on the casket he had conserved: restorative drops counter drugs and exhaustion, high-grade enhancers give him enough physical and mental capacity to confront threats beyond his ordinary limits, and a broad antidote purges poison below Green. Those advantages carry a severe boundary Dora had stated precisely—the strongest brews are intended for at least Yellow-grade bodies, last only a limited time, and can behave like poison or leave punishing backlash in a weaker user. Kai survives by trusting her labels rather than treating the potions as consequence-free power. (Chapters 227–230)

After consuming the last universal cures in the Sanctuary, Kai discovers that mainland markets cannot easily replace them. He continues to use Dora's habits—orderly diagnosis, complete information, careful notes, and respect for ingredient interactions—while recognizing how much he still learned through her direct correction. At Raelion, her memory is personal as well as technical: he recalls her cooking, humming over several cauldrons, and patient lessons while considering how to find his former teachers. The name Theodora Etinam in her book is his best lead, yet the danger surrounding Elijah and Virya makes him postpone asking openly, leaving Dora's identity and whereabouts unresolved. Appearance and personality

Theodora is a plump, dark-skinned woman with curly red hair tied behind her head and bright yellow eyes. When Kai first enters her laboratory, large goggles are pushed up from those eyes, and her apron and dress are marked by colorful stains and corroded patches from her work. She appears around forty, but later says she is more than a century old. Her rapid, precise hands and ability to manage several cauldrons or mana tendrils at once contrast with the cheerful domestic disorder suggested by her stained work clothes. (Chapters 14 and 22; Chapter 348)

Dora is talkative, humorous, and openly affectionate. She hums while brewing, chats through gardening and cooking, calls herself Auntie Dora, and punctures Elijah's severity by calling him “Elly.” That warmth is not carelessness. She watches Kai's reasoning more closely than his memorized answers, demands that he master basic remedies before magical ingredients, and becomes stern when his experiments threaten permanent harm. Her emotional transparency makes her easier for Kai to trust than his other teachers, while her refusal to reveal household secrets and her decision not to publish sensitive recipes show practiced caution beneath the genial manner. She has a particular soft spot for children who are overwhelmed by their circumstances, but she does not simply shield Kai from difficulty. Dora converts Elijah's harassment into useful joint training, lets Kai make reversible mistakes, and gives honest limits even when he dislikes them. Her final letter frames independence and family bonds as more important than limitless acceleration under powerful guardians. This combination of nurture, rigor, and respect for a student's eventual autonomy is the lasting core of her relationship with Kai. (Chapters 17–18, 71–74, and 103)

Skills, magic, and the Guide

Theodora is an alchemist and broadly trained mage whose exact race grade, profession, attributes, and named skills remain concealed. Kai can only determine that her mana network is too complex for his reading and that she is at least Yellow; her century of experience and demonstrated control establish mastery, but not a formal grade or advancement. Her specialties combine healing and enhancement alchemy, botanical mana diagnosis, Nature magic, several additional elemental affinities, and practical instruction in the Guide. (Chapters 59, 66, 73, and 94)

Alchemy, healing, and botanical craft

Dora begins alchemy with ingredient knowledge and processing. Mana Sense identifies where a magical plant stores and circulates essence; careful harvesting preserves the living specimen; Apothecary and Processing Plants teach preparation before a brew begins. During combination, she threads up to half a dozen strands of mana through a concoction to calm conflicting energies, while controlling heat, timing, potency, and physical consistency. Her own processing is several times faster than Kai's without sacrificing precision. This workflow makes alchemy an interaction between material properties and mana rather than a recipe that succeeds by measurements alone. (Chapters 14, 17, and 21–22)

Her principal products are restoratives, healing mixtures, enhancers, and antidotes. She diagnoses injury by symptoms and mana flow, treats exhaustion and skill overstrain, and produces Orange-grade brews capable of repairing serious damage or temporarily raising mental and physical performance. The strongest parting recipes can purge most poisons below Green or sustain a Yellow-grade user under extreme conditions, but their effectiveness depends on dose, timing, the patient's race grade, and the cause of injury. Lower-grade bodies can be poisoned by a potion's strength, enhancements expire, and the resulting backlash can leave the user vulnerable; even her broad antidote is finite and not established as effective against Green-grade or stronger toxins. Dora deliberately avoids training Kai as a poisoner. She does teach nonlethal irritants, emetics, laxatives, and countermeasures, and her medical principles let him later analyze drugs, but her stated focus remains healing and enhancement. Her Baquaire recipe collection is designed around ingredients that can actually be sourced in the islands, including original remedies refined through Kai's tests. She withholds publication because advanced recipes would attract dangerous scrutiny and limits what Kai should share, showing that reproducibility and access are constrained by secrecy as much as technique. Mana Sense, elemental magic, and instruction

Dora teaches Mana Sense as interpretation rather than mere detection. A student focuses on one organism, traces how essence moves through branches, roots, or channels, compares anomalies with ordinary sight, and tests explanations against the whole specimen. The same principle supports human diagnosis, harvesting, and alchemical control, although she warns that a person's channels are far more complex than a flower's. Her exercises reward complete observation and adaptable hypotheses, and their limit is the user's knowledge: seeing an unusual flow does not by itself explain its cause. (Chapters 17–18)

Her strongest demonstrated elemental affinity is Nature. With a touch she revives a wilting flower, gathers Nature motes in coordinated swarms, and supplies Kai with essence while guiding him to heal a silver hibiscus. Rather than forcing ambient mana by raw will, she teaches him to understand and “persuade” what an element tends to do; the method is slower to grasp but creates more efficient cooperation. She also instructs him in Water and Earth applications, conjures a small sprinkle of water, and shows enough Space magic for Kai to remember her as the last space caster he personally saw. Space is a middling affinity for her, and she warns that scarce motes, difficult perception, high costs, and weak early-grade employment make it a dangerous specialization for an unsupported novice. The Guide, skills, and limits

After Kai's First Seal, Dora shows how intention and visualization customize the Guide's interface, how experience notices can be scheduled, and how qualified skills enter a personal archive. Removing an active skill frees a slot but causes mental shock proportional to the skill's level and grade; the first removal is especially disorienting, and losing a skill above the user's own race grade can be dangerous. Dora can provide medicine that softens the blowback, but cannot make the choice reversible. She therefore pairs mechanical knowledge with conservative advice about foundations and future profession needs. (Chapters 19 and 91)

Her instruction extends to mana constructs, runes, affinities, and how different crafts reinforce one another. She makes Kai study alchemical inks because an enchanter either needs alchemy or close cooperation with an alchemist, and she uses large Mana Manipulation constructs to train divided control. At the latest point in the corpus, no formal change to Dora's grade or profession is established. What develops is Kai's ability to reproduce her methods without supervision; it remains markedly below her breadth, particularly in diagnosis, Space magic, and high-grade potion design. • Kai Tylenn: Dora becomes Kai's alchemy and mana teacher, but also feeds him, treats his injuries, and provides the emotional safety that lets him withstand the estate's harsher tests. Her farewell asks him to value family and chart his own path; years later he still measures teachers, remedies, and craft standards against her. (Chapters 14–22, 61–74, 101–103, and 227–348)
• Virya: Dora addresses Virya as “my Lady” and accepts her authority, including the limits placed on external help for Kai and the need to keep the household's history secret. Their relationship is not merely service: Virya openly acknowledges Dora's superior knack for Nature magic, and Dora and Virya both choose to abandon their previous lives to help Elijah escape.
