Ma Xuan

Ma Xuan is a Hidden Dragon Institute formation specialist whose expertise in concealment and illusion formations supports the human students in the Goldwater Ruins and later Su Chen's operations around Clear River City. (Chapters 298–630)

Biography

Ruins defenses and formation work

Ma Xuan enters the Goldwater Ruins as the eighth-year student ranked thirty-seventh. His arrival immediately strengthens the students' improvised headquarters: he corrects Jiang Hanfeng's concealment formation so that it suppresses sound and smell while leaving the mountain visually recognizable to allies. Because this expertise is more valuable at the base than in the first beast-hunting party, he remains behind to guard the stronghold. When Qi Weiyan returns gravely wounded with news of trapped companions, Ma Xuan follows her to the rescue group despite being unable to match her desperate pace. (Chapters 298–302)

During the northern-mountain assault, Ma Xuan advises on formations rather than pretending to know what he does not. He explains that the Heyser Fog is physical fog rather than a direct consciousness illusion, so his normal specialty cannot simply dispel it, and later helps Su Chen dismantle adaptive defenses. After the expedition, he joins other classmates in Clear River, assists with taking pirate boats, and co-develops the Ten Fiends Thousand Forms Formation. He operates one of four formation disks that combine around Zhou Juanjia, then returns to graduate after helping establish the Third River Army. He remains alive for a later reunion with his former cohort. (Chapters 319–422 and 630)

Appearance and personality

The corpus gives no physical description, age, clothing, or distinguishing feature for Ma Xuan. He is cooperative and technically candid, willing to identify both what a formation does and where his expertise stops. His unhappy reaction to guard duty shows an ordinary youthful impatience, but he still performs the assignment. His friendship with Jiang Hanfeng and readiness to answer emergency calls make him a dependable specialist rather than an isolated researcher. (Chapters 298–321 and 410–422)

Abilities and cultivation

Ma Xuan specializes in concealment and illusion Origin Formations. He can modify an existing concealment array to block both sound and scent without hiding a landmark needed by friendly searchers. In the northern mountain, he can analyze the distinction between a mental illusion and Heyser Fog, whose physical persistence places it outside a simple consciousness countermeasure. This demonstrates technical diagnosis but also a firm limit: he cannot neutralize every formation merely because it appears deceptive. (Chapters 298–321)

With Jiang Hanfeng, Wei Yang, and Ling Yan, he co-invents the Ten Fiends Thousand Forms Formation, designed with Su Chen's funding to suppress seven or eight Yang Opening experts or delay a Light Shaking cultivator. Four linked formation disks can also amplify Zhou Juanjia's consciousness-centered attack. These are cooperative systems; the text does not credit Ma Xuan with operating them alone or state his own cultivation realm, bloodline, combat technique, or later progression. (Chapters 413–417)
