Bethstana is a once-famous Borderland Third Rank Wizard whose name is tied to Bayton Academy and the Inverted Tree. She preserves herself by merging with the tree, directs Pond and its internal defenses, and tries to use Shaya as part of her return. Saul defeats the tree faction and confines Bethstana in the Dead Wizard's Diary. The black page shields her soul from pollution but forces truthful answers, frustrating her pride while making her a valuable source on the Inverted, Black Sea, and Red Sea Trees. (Chapters 732–749)

Appearance and personality

Within the tree, Bethstana appears as a partly human female body whose remaining flesh is overtaken by plant structure. Proud, secretive, and theatrical, she dislikes the Diary's power to strip suspense from her answers.

Abilities

She commands the Inverted Tree's inner space, roots, branches, and captured souls, and possesses extensive knowledge of pollution-processing tree lineages.
