Biography

From Bayton successor to preserved consciousness

Beth is introduced as Bayton Academy's reserved First Rank successor, but the later revelation of her full identity as Bethstana connects her to the Inverted Tree and a much older plan for resurrection. She uses the tree to control Caugust, assimilates Shaya, and launches a citywide sacrifice when her body and survival fail. The Wishing Candle intensifies her despair, and Saul exploits the resulting instability to offer preservation instead of mutual destruction. The diary absorbs her consciousness, separating it from the tree's worst pollution. As a black-page adviser, Beth supplies ancient and fate-line knowledge, accompanies Saul's later decisions, and remains present when Pei'er arrives in the final confrontation. Appearance and personality

Beth first appears as a quiet woman near advancement, later as a decaying Inverted Tree core with only fragments of human features. Diary preservation restores her rational, observant voice, though she retains a dry willingness to challenge Saul's assumptions. (Chapters 476, 732–743, and 747–749)

Abilities

She possesses deep knowledge of the Inverted Tree, fate-line manipulation, citywide soul control, resurrection, and ancient off-world organisms. Within the diary she cannot command the tree directly but can analyze related structures and advise Saul. (Chapters 732–749, 773–807, and 893–985)

Relationships

• Shaya: Beth kills and assimilates Shaya, loses the Wishing Candle and tree core to his counterattack, and is replaced by him without merging their identities. (Chapters 492–501 and 716–743)
• Saul: Saul defeats Beth's sacrifice but preserves her consciousness in exchange for knowledge and service. (Chapters 741–749 and 773–985)
• Bethstana: Beth is the abbreviated identity under which she first appears, while Bethstana is the full name Wilder later recognizes and associates with the Inverted Tree's history. (Chapters 476 and 732)
