Esmeralda
Esmeralda is an ancient Grand Traversal Toad and legendary thief trapped in a cycle of forced reincarnation. Her current incarnation joins Zac Atwood to enter the Left Imperial Palace, where she seeks a treasure capable of suppressing the temporal power that grants her longevity while steadily eroding her identity.
Biography
Choosing a path into the palace
Esmeralda first observes Zac from afar while traveling with Lova. Although her small toad incarnation is still immature, she frightens away a Dreambeast that threatens his breakthrough and argues that even Sendor should not interfere with her choice. Her interest is calculated as well as personal: she needs to borrow the fate of a qualified young entrant to reach an Eternal Heritage whose temporal treasure may free her from accelerating reincarnations. Zac's unusual providence and ability to survive the inverse keys make him a viable partner rather than merely an amusing target. (Chapters 1004 and 1014)
When Esmeralda approaches Zac directly, she proves her value by slipping through the Sangha's karmic restrictions and stealing a dangerous object from a Lotus Pavilion. Lova explains that theft itself affirms Esmeralda's path; defeating a defense matters more to her than possessing the prize afterward. Esmeralda then accepts a System-enforced agreement: Zac provides passage into the Left Imperial Palace, while she must help him pursue his aims even after securing her own. The bargain converts her interest in his fate into a defined partnership with obligations on both sides. (Chapter 1040)
The thief and her partner
By the time Esmeralda reaches Zac again, her current body has advanced from Early to Middle Hegemony. Earth's strengthened shroud frustrates her entrance, yet her response shows both ancient perspective and childish pride: she hides an open teahouse from perception, mocks ordinary speech, and marks Zac so he can comprehend her Dao-based gestures. She still needs his shrine to accompany him into the inheritance, but she refuses the role of dependent passenger. Her reading of fate and collapsing providence gives him strategic context, while the binding contract ensures that her preparations support their shared expedition. (Chapters 1040 and 1189)
Inside the inheritance, Esmeralda teaches Zac how an expert thief survives after the theft. She conceals him in her spatial pouch, maintains an illusion over a plundered Heartworld, and carries them away while a powerful ant kingdom searches for the culprits. Her delight in watching the distant reaction clashes with Zac's caution, but she still explains the deception when pressed. She had extracted the surviving fragment of a Natal Treasure and stored most of the Heartworld within it, gaining an embryo that may eventually strengthen her Heavenly Ladder while showing Zac how much of her craft depends on accumulated knowledge rather than a single skill. (Chapters 1282–1283)
Mercurial Court expedition
The Mercurial Court turns Esmeralda from guide into active protector. When Zac's bloodline provokes the ruins, she repeatedly relocates his unconscious body, lays false trails, and identifies a moving memory domain as their chance to register him before the Court's defenses close in. She does not pretend to command the entire ancient complex: its deeper arrays can detect even her unless she pays a severe price. Instead, she studies narrow openings, lets Zac provide the necessary identity and protection, and uses her knowledge of spatial connections to turn unstable memories into routes toward real ruins and treasure. (Chapters 1363–1365)
The hunt on Sevona's island forces Esmeralda to turn an adversarial encounter into a working alliance. After Idiche catches her during a prophetic dream, Esmeralda returns the stolen evidence, identifies the corruption as proof of an infiltration, and directs Idiche to Zac rather than wasting time escaping alone. She later helps suppress the infiltrators' trapped Monarch and, when corruption makes Zac hallucinate her death and nearly turn on Idiche, emerges battered but alive, bundles both allies into her pouch, and carries them along a dream-road through otherwise impassable formations. Their survival preserves Idiche's warning, yields recovered Corruption Crystals, and helps the Mercurial Court manifest another halo, while making Esmeralda one of Zac's trusted companions rather than only his contracted guide. (Chapters 1380, 1392, and 1408)
A Qriz'Ul impersonating Esmeralda exposes both her pride and the limits of her current body. Enraged by the stolen likeness, she creates an immense spatial loop that prevents the creature from escaping long enough for Zac to kill it. The technique damages the balance between Space and Time within her, so she refuses to use it as a routine combat solution. She thereafter returns to her preferred role: warning Zac away from trapped structures, bypassing delicate locks, navigating temporal memory domains, and calculating exits while he holds off threats. By the latest encounter, their partnership relies on his force and her routes, even when she cannot resist triggering one last alarm to snatch a real treasure. (Chapters 1366 and 1433)
Appearance and personality
Esmeralda's current incarnation is a black Grand Traversal Toad whose size changes dramatically. She can appear small enough to be carried in one hand or perch on Zac's head, yet later sprawls more than fifteen meters across. Mysterious runes mark her cheeks, and vats of black, death-attuned liquid rest on her back while imperfectly containing temporal ripples. She communicates first through gestures and croaks, then teaches Zac to perceive the Dao-borne meaning woven through those movements. (Chapters 1004, 1040, and 1189)
She is gleefully acquisitive, proud of her beauty and reputation, and more excited by defeating a lock than by conventional status. Her current behavior often resembles a mischievous child, though moments of instruction reveal the perspective of an ancient cultivator. Esmeralda values audacity but distinguishes calculated risk from pointless danger. She will steal under overwhelming opposition, yet prefers escape, misdirection, and making a pursuer unlucky to standing her ground. Insults to her appearance can override that discipline, as the Qriz'Ul doppelganger discovers. (Chapters 1040, 1189, 1283, and 1366)
Abilities and cultivation
Esmeralda is an ancient beast whose original self reached Supremacy. The cultivation of that original form is not described in enough detail to assign a class, core quality, or present formal stage. Her active incarnation is different: it was only three years old and an Early Hegemon when Zac formally met her, and it had reached Middle Hegemony by their reunion. The rapid rebuilding draws on her former understanding, but a powerful beast bloodline requires immense energy and her current body remains far weaker than her historic peak. (Chapters 1040, 1189, and 1283)
Forced reincarnation and temporal balance
Esmeralda stole and absorbed a temporal object that provides an unceasing supply of longevity, creating a functional imitation of immortality. The price is repeated forced reincarnation. Each cycle removes a sliver of her identity, and the intervals between cycles are shortening; the incarnation seen with Lova is identified as her 403rd. The object has become part of Esmeralda's body and cannot simply be extracted or used to grant longevity to someone else. She enters the Left Imperial Palace to find one of its utmost treasures and suppress this destabilizing effect. (Chapters 1004 and 1040)
The exact interaction between her reincarnation cycle, the death-attuned liquid carried on her back, and her cultivation is uncertain. The vats suppress or contain some temporal fluctuations, but do not eliminate them. Having excess Temporal Energy extracted lets Esmeralda use a major spatial restraint, yet doing so damages her balance between Space and Time. This makes temporal management a survival constraint rather than a general combat advantage: her longevity is vast, but every reincarnation and emergency expenditure threatens continuity of self or the stability of her current form. (Chapters 1189 and 1366)
Grand Traversal Toad bloodline
Esmeralda's bloodline allows her to resist or ignore many restrictions, including karmic suppression strong enough to guard a Sangha Lotus Pavilion. She can also create a blind spot concealed from mundane senses, arrays, and apparently even Heaven's gaze, with enough potency that Zac doubts ordinary Monarchs could eavesdrop. These effects make her exceptionally suited to infiltration. Their exact thresholds are not established: Earth's strengthened shroud delays her, the Mercurial Court's deeper defenses can still discover her, and avoiding detection in its ruins may demand an unacceptable price. (Chapters 1040, 1189, and 1363)
Her bloodline also supports changes of scale and an unusual affinity for traversal. Esmeralda can shrink from a fifteen-meter beast to a portable companion, move with extreme speed, and carry Zac inside a spatial pouch. She can hide sound waves in a separate space so a scanning enemy receives an apparently complete but false picture, and she can glide without touching a vibration-sensitive landscape. She stresses that some of this concealment is advanced Dao manipulation rather than an automatic racial ability, leaving the precise division between inherited talent and learned technique uncertain. (Chapters 1189 and 1283)
Space, fate, and theft
Esmeralda's Dao of Space lets her alter local rules rather than merely teleport. She redirects perception, manipulates other people's positions, reads spatial connections as memory domains collapse, accelerates movement through space, and constructs a looping road that functions as a cage. Her most powerful displayed restraint is self-harming and therefore reserved for emergencies. She normally uses spatial control to evade, isolate, and open routes while a stronger direct combatant handles the enemy, a division of labor that defines her later partnership with Zac. (Chapters 1283, 1363–1366, and 1433)
Her relationship with fate is broad but incompletely explained. Esmeralda can recognize gathering providence, borrow the fate of young trial-takers to approach restricted inheritances, sense meaningful spatial connections, and discuss Destiny as something that can be rewritten through the language of the Cosmos. She often frames escape as an opponent becoming unlucky, but no exact probability-shifting formula or cost is established. In practice, her fate expertise identifies opportunities and dangerous turns; it does not guarantee a treasure, prevent alarms, or keep Zac's own providence from producing disastrous coincidences. (Chapters 1004, 1189, 1282–1283, and 1365)
Dao language and infiltration craft
Esmeralda communicates by arranging fundamental Dao concepts into contextual meaning. Once she marks Zac as a recipient, her gestures convey layered thoughts directly rather than encoding words through a conventional sign language. She claims mastery of this cosmic language helps her rewrite the conditions around taboo regions and defensive arrays. The method demands understanding across many Daos and experience at the highest levels; Zac can perceive its structure but cannot reproduce it as a Hegemon. Esmeralda's mark can also be resisted or briefly disrupted by strong defensive bloodline effects. (Chapter 1189)
Her practical craft combines this knowledge with patient observation. She detects concealed compartments, bypasses keylocks, builds convincing illusions from slivers of the real object, compresses a Heartworld into its surviving treasure fragment, and distinguishes searches based on vibration from those using reflected sound. These feats do not make every defense trivial. Some require a compatible token, a collapsing memory, Zac's force, or a piece of the genuine target to sustain the deception. Esmeralda's greatest advantage is therefore choosing the right opening, not universal authority over locks and arrays. (Chapters 1040, 1282–1283, 1363–1366, and 1433)

Relationships
- Zac Atwood: Zac provides Esmeralda passage into the Left Imperial Palace, and she is contractually bound to help pursue his goals. Their alliance develops into a complementary partnership: he supplies force and dangerous providence, while she supplies routes, concealment, instruction, and expert theft.
- Lova: Lova is Esmeralda's dear friend, translator, and intermediary. She watches over the young incarnation, explains Esmeralda's reincarnation crisis to Zac, and negotiates the binding agreement that places the two trial-takers together.
- Sendor: Sendor shelters Esmeralda and her reincarnations within the Perennial Vastness, helping keep them from capture and the Obverse River. Esmeralda is grateful for that protection without becoming obedient; she boasts that her original form could seal him if he obstructed her plans.
