Shay
Shay is the last known survivor of the Noctis Clan and the only woman among Alter's core Deleters. She joins Alter seeking protection and revenge after her clan's destruction, then defects when Raze Cromwell reveals Alter's role in the catastrophe and offers her a chance to strike the people responsible.
Biography
Noctis survivor turned Deleter
Shay first appears at a meeting of Alter's five Deleters, already identified as the last surviving Noctis Clan warrior. After Bofan disappeared and the clan was purged, its remaining members were killed or driven into hiding. Shay's talent drew Heino's attention, while Alter offered the safety and resources to pursue revenge against the Dark Faction she believed responsible. That motive, rather than loyalty to Alter's hidden project, explains why she accepts the Deleter role and preserves the Noctis sword tradition. (Chapter 868)
Defeat, revelation, and defection
During the attack on Belil's funeral, Shay fights behind an Alter helmet and uses the Dark Edge formations against the Crimson Crane before meeting Raze. Their battle demonstrates that both know Noctis arts, but Raze's Dark Magic and Demonic Qi let him break her domain and defeat her. He then tells her that Alter's actions created the dimensional ripple tied to the Noctis Clan's destruction. Shay is badly wounded and distrustful, yet accepts his offer because it restores a path toward revenge against those who manipulated her. (Chapters 1139 and 1161–1166)
Shay follows Raze back without her helmet, visibly uneasy among people she had just attacked. She nevertheless becomes his instructor for the seventh and eighth Dark Edge formations, watching him master them with Safa's healing and the helmet Raze has claimed. Her expertise gives the coalition knowledge that survived the clan's fall, while her loss of the helmet establishes that she is no longer fighting with the full equipment Alter had supplied. (Chapters 1190–1193)
War against Heino
Shay later confronts Heino during the assault on Alter, using Dusk Wing, Phantom Edge, and Eternal Night while openly regretting the loss of her helmet's support. Her domain redirects Heino's attacks and initially denies his freezing tactics, but his time magic accelerates the domain's decay and restores fallen fighters, leaving her unable to win alone. The coalition's arrival prevents the painful death he promises her and turns the fight into the shared campaign she joined Raze to pursue. (Chapters 1240–1247)
After Heino's defeat, Shay helps identify his disguise and explains that Alter's strongest stored artifacts were moved to the imperial vault. This is her last direct narrative role: alive, no longer a Deleter, and contributing insider knowledge to the victorious coalition. The supplied corpus does not say whether she rebuilds the Noctis Clan, reclaims the helmet, or remains with Raze afterward. (Chapters 1261–1268)
Appearance and personality
Shay is introduced as the only woman among the Deleters, wearing thin, flowing Pagna clothing. In battle an iron helmet covers her face; it resembles imperial armor, with a nose ridge and feathers projecting from either side. The corpus does not establish a consistent hair or eye description beneath it, and many observers know her only through the helmet and Noctis techniques. (Chapters 868 and 1077)
Revenge is her most stable motivation, but its target changes as she learns more. Shay can be sardonic about Alter's internal relationships and initially meets enemies with confidence, yet her defection is not effortless: she follows Raze sheepishly and knows his allies have reason to distrust her. Her willingness to teach him and fight Heino shows a pragmatic capacity to redirect loyalty when evidence undermines the cause she served. (Chapters 1166, 1190–1193, and 1241)
Magic, cultivation, and abilities
Shay commands Dark Qi and all eight formations of the Dark Edge Sword Arts, knowledge preserved from the Noctis Clan. Demonstrated applications include Dusk Wing's multiple airborne slashes, Phantom Edge's duplicated strikes, Void Pulse, and Eternal Night. Eternal Night spreads a dark domain through her sword and Qi, lets her attract or redirect attacks within the space, and supports combinations with the other formations. Its creation costs substantial Qi and is not permanent. (Chapters 1161–1166, 1193, and 1241)
The system has clear counters. Raze's superior Dark Magic can tear down Eternal Night, while Heino's time manipulation accelerates the domain until it crumbles despite Shay having just formed it. Her Dark Qi also produces a different final formation from Raze's Demonic Qi and magic, so mastery of the same sword sequence does not make their effects identical. Without the helmet, pain, fatigue, and accumulated wounds limit how long Shay can sustain her highest techniques. (Chapters 1163–1166, 1193, and 1241)
Relationships
- Raze Cromwell: Raze defeats Shay, exposes Alter's role in her clan's destruction, and recruits rather than kills her. She teaches him the final Dark Edge formations and joins his war.
- Heino: Heino recognizes Shay's talent and makes her a Deleter, but his organization exploits the revenge that brought her in. After her defection he tries to execute her personally.
- Alba and Tilon: Shay first meets Raze's allies as opponents during the funeral attack. They later fight on the same coalition side against Alter, without the corpus claiming that their earlier hostility becomes friendship.
- Noctis Clan: The destroyed clan is the source of Shay's sword arts, identity, and continuing desire for revenge. The corpus calls her its last remaining member but does not show her founding a successor group.
Items
- Alter helmet: The helmet suppresses the wearer's sensation of pain and fatigue, allowing continued exertion without granting invulnerability or endless Qi. Removing it exposes the accumulated bodily strain. Raze takes it after defeating Shay and uses it during training; Shay does not recover it in the supplied corpus. (Chapters 1161–1166 and 1190–1193)
- Sword: Shay uses a sword to channel the Dark Edge formations and establish Eternal Night. It is not given a canonical name or separate demonstrated enchantment. (Chapters 1161–1166 and 1241)
