Mordain

Mordain Tharros is an Alterian War Magus recruited by Alen to join Raze Cromwell's campaign against the Grand Magi. He brings a loyal military detachment and powerful lightning magic, but his insistence on limits in warfare places him in direct conflict with the Dark Guild and ultimately makes him a target of its leader.

Biography

An uneasy coalition

Mordain enters the alliance as a seasoned officer whose soldiers answer to him rather than the Grand Magi. He accepts Raze's honest admission that the Dark Guild contains criminals and that revenge, not pure justice, drives the campaign, but calls the partnership a lesser evil chosen against a greater one. His condition is explicit: his people will kill in battle, yet will neither ignore atrocities nor remain passive if their nominal allies commit them. (Chapters 1524–1525)

That moral line is complicated by Mordain's own assumptions. In the Underside he initially argues that its residents ruined their lives through crime and addiction, prompting Raze to confront him with the district's inherited poverty and deliberate exclusion. Mordain resists because he trusts official education, but listens instead of breaking the alliance. During the first Glory Guild operation, his objection focuses not on taking lives generally but on killing people who surrender, bringing him and Varkos into open conflict with the celebrating Dark Guild. The Cerebus ambush and Harvey's purge

Mordain reluctantly accepts command of a deceptive ambush because the coalition needs to draw the Cerebus Guild into an isolated factory without endangering civilians. He supplies the report, guides the targets into position, and fights beside Harvey, using lightning to help overwhelm Lias and the remaining squad. Shared combat briefly lowers his suspicion, and he asks only that his own dead be returned to their families rather than erased during the cleanup. (Chapters 1535–1541)

The trust is fatal. After an exhausted Mordain uses wind to divert a Dark Guild attack from a fleeing worker, Harvey concludes that the military remains an obstacle. He surprises Mordain after the joint victory, drives a hand through him, and orders every non-guild soldier killed. Mordain dies before he can organize resistance; Harvey hides the massacre even from Raze, and the later revelation destroys Alen's alliance with the Dark Guild. (Chapters 1541–1543 and 1578–1587)

Appearance and personality

Mordain is a tall man in his thirties with cropped brown hair and a jaw described as set like iron. His dark-grey military uniform marks him as a War Magus, and his bearing is controlled enough that his introduction consists of a formal readiness to serve. (Chapter 1524)

He is stern, educated, and strongly attached to military ideas of duty and honorable combat. Those convictions can become prejudice when he treats official accounts as sufficient evidence about the Underside, yet they also make him challenge allies who kill prisoners or workers. He accepts lethal orders when he understands their purpose, but wants a reason, civilian safeguards, and a boundary between war and murder. (Chapters 1527, 1530, 1533, and 1538)

Magic, cultivation, and abilities

Mordain is a War Magus, a seasoned military mage with command experience and enough personal power to anchor a unit of loyal soldiers. His principal demonstrated affinity is lightning, described as fast and merciless during the duel with Lias. He combines that pressure with Harvey's seven-star magic to defeat the stronger Cerebus formation, then helps clear its remaining members. The corpus does not state Mordain's own star rank or name individual spells. (Chapters 1524–1525 and 1541)

He can also use wind magic for flight and precise redirection. Mordain travels through the air while leading the Cerebus team to the ambush and later knocks Harvey's attack away from a fleeing civilian with a sharp gust. His limits are clearest after the factory battle: exhaustion and a momentary belief in battlefield trust leave him unable to perceive or counter Harvey's surprise strike. Relationships

• Alen: Alen recruits Mordain as a rare officer whose soldiers are loyal to their commander, regards him as a genuine ally, and later breaks with Raze after learning Harvey murdered him.
• Varkos: The two War Magi join together, share distrust of the Dark Guild, and object to its treatment of surrendering enemies. Their combined forces form much of the military contribution to Raze's coalition.
• Raze Cromwell: Mordain accepts Raze's frank account of his motives but clashes with him over the Underside. Raze later regards Mordain as an ally who genuinely helped and condemns Harvey's unauthorized killing.
• Harvey: They cooperate against the Cerebus Guild while disagreeing over legitimate wartime conduct. Harvey exploits Mordain's lowered guard after the victory and kills him as an obstacle to the Dark Guild's methods.
