Marcus

Marcus Ford is an Alter squad captain stationed in Pagna, an otherworlder from the same world as Himmy. He escorts Raze out of the Demonic Faction, later recognizes the Dark Magus's identity, and repeatedly chooses personal loyalty and practical restraint alongside his formal Alter duties.

Biography

Contact in the Demonic Faction

Marcus answers Graft's request concerning an isolated Alter operative and learns that the newcomer claims to belong to Himmy's squad. He initially tests Raze Cromwell, ordering a nonfatal shot and probing his unexpected sword skill, but stops the confrontation once it threatens the requested rescue. Marcus verifies the badge and connection rather than abandoning another otherworlder in hostile territory. (Chapters 455–460)

As squad leader, Marcus has Barlan watch the unfamiliar mage, organizes the return route, and escorts Raze toward the Lethal Bite Clan. His group helps repair a damaged city before leaving, uses emblems to pass the border, and hands Raze back to Himmy. Marcus frames the favor humorously as a debt, but also tells Raze that he is interested in what the inexperienced recruit may become. (Chapters 467, 479, and 482–483)

Knowledge, Loyalty, and Alter's Fracture

Marcus later attends the faction tournament with his squad and recognizes Raze when he openly uses magic. He is unsure whether Alter's rules require intervention and follows the wider response rather than attacking immediately. Afterward he admits to his team that he had undertaken an off-book action for people from his own world, demonstrating that his command decisions are not reducible to the Programmers' orders. (Chapters 614–615, 626, 673–677, and 824)

Flashbacks show Marcus, Himmy, and Scar once meeting regularly because they came from the same world. Marcus and Himmy try to discourage Scar from becoming a Deleter; after Scar accepts the role, institutional suspicion opens a rift among them. Marcus continues making friendly approaches and does not take Scar's rejection personally, while recognizing how deeply the estrangement affects Himmy. (Chapters 849–852)

After Alter's “great annihilation,” Marcus is identified as one of the few squad leaders spared, partly because his group maintained a comparatively good relationship with Himmy's squad. Raze later counts Marcus and other Alterians among those he has agreed to send home. The corpus does not individually narrate Marcus stepping through the Golden Globe portal, so his exact destination after that arrangement remains unconfirmed. (Chapters 1117 and 1273–1276)

Appearance and personality

Marcus wears deliberately shabby everyday Pagna clothing and a large outer sheet, disguising the lean, well-trained body underneath. He has a sharp jaw and relatively short hair. This presentation lets him resemble an ordinary citizen rather than a clan warrior or foreign operative. (Chapter 455)

He is sociable, teasing, and willing to laugh in tense situations, but he watches unfamiliar operatives carefully and expects his squad to maintain cover. He values fellow otherworlders, can place friendship above formal procedure, and is less ideologically committed to Alter than Scar becomes. His caution occasionally gives way to curiosity, as when his “little test” of Raze nearly escalates. (Chapters 455–460, 479, 824, and 849–852)

Magic, cultivation, and abilities

Marcus comes from the same non-Pagna world as Himmy and is not identified as a mage; Barlan is separately introduced as the mage in Marcus's team. Marcus's own demonstrated equipment is a gun, which he hides beneath local clothing, and his combat value lies in firearm handling, fitness, field judgment, and squad command. The corpus does not establish a named innate power, Qi stage, Hybrid form, or later magical transformation for him. (Chapters 455–458)

He is experienced in covert operations: maintaining local disguises, testing identities, deploying specialists, navigating faction routes, and deciding when Alter rules should or should not be enforced. These skills have limits. Raze deceives Marcus's squad more than once, and Marcus relies on his mage and other specialists when evaluating supernatural evidence. His latest state preserves his experience but provides no demonstrated power progression. (Chapters 457–467, 479–483, and 677)

Relationships

  • Himmy: Marcus is Himmy's old friend, fellow otherworlder, and Alter peer. He helps Himmy's recruit, expects a favor in return, and later understands the damage Scar's promotion caused him.
  • Raze Cromwell: Marcus first tests and then escorts Raze, later recognizes him as both Alter operative and Dark Magus, and chooses not to make that knowledge an immediate attack order.
  • Graft: Graft reports to Marcus and requests his squad's help making contact with Raze in the Demonic Faction.
  • Scar: Marcus once shares regular meals with Scar and Himmy. He discourages Scar's Deleter path and continues reaching out after Alter's role rules drive them apart.

Items

  • Gun: Marcus carries a firearm in a waist strap and conceals it beneath Pagna clothing. The corpus does not give it a unique name or show a transfer.
  • Alter emblems and communication gear: His squad uses institutional badges and route credentials for identification and travel. No single named artifact is assigned to Marcus personally.
