Barlan

Barlan is a former Glory Guild mage who serves in Marcus's Alter squad in Pagna and becomes an uneasy witness to Raze’s growing power.

Biography

Escorting the suspected mage

Barlan joins Marcus’s squad in locating and escorting Raze. His magical training lets him recognize high-level enchantment on Raze’s clothing and verify the wind boundary of a silence dome. When Raze defeats the team’s memory measure, Barlan detects the deception but keeps it private after Raze helps save civilians, judging that support to be the honorable response. (Chapters 457–479)

Fear of the Dark Magus

Barlan later observes Raze’s large-scale magic and recognizes signs that exceed ordinary field work. By the time Alter considers another investigation, he reveals his past as an up-and-coming Glory Guild mage and insists that the Dark Magus is a nine-star threat. His refusal helps persuade Marcus’s squad not to accept a mission they believe would be suicidal. (Chapters 626–677, 824)

Appearance and personality

Barlan is a middle-aged man with long blond hair. He is observant, cautious, and capable of withholding information when conscience conflicts with orders. His later fear is grounded in professional magical knowledge rather than simple panic.

Magic, cultivation, and abilities

Barlan is a trained mage with demonstrated sensitivity to enchantments and wind currents. He can create or analyze silent areas by manipulating wind and can identify sophisticated spell effects. During the city crisis he uses cursed pills supplied by the Dark Magus for a temporary boost, but explicitly warns that their curse makes them dangerous; that enhancement is item-derived and not his natural level.

Relationships

Barlan serves under Marcus alongside Tanya. He develops a wary respect for Raze after the latter protects civilians and later becomes the squad’s strongest factual voice against pursuing him.

Items

Barlan temporarily consumes a cursed enhancement pill during the city fighting. The corpus does not establish continuing custody, a personal named weapon, or an approved item page belonging to him.
