Doehring Cowart
Doehring Cowart is a peak Saint-level earth Grand Magus of the fallen Pouant Empire whose soul survives for more than five thousand years inside the Coiling Dragon Ring. After Linley awakens him, the lonely ancient expert becomes the boy’s secret teacher and surrogate grandfather, guiding his magic, judgment, and survival before willingly consuming his own soul to save him (Chapters 19–20, 166).
Biography
Mentor Within the Coiling Dragon Ring
Doehring’s bodily life ends when his old enemy Hamelin and a second Saint-level combatant ambush him. Rather than let Hamelin capture and torment his spirit, he seals his soul within the ring he calls the Worldring, where he remains unable to sense the passing millennia or travel more than a few meters from the artifact. Linley’s blood bond finally lets him emerge. When the child asks to call him “Grandpa Doehring,” the title touches an old man who had neither children nor grandchildren, and he eagerly accepts the chance to teach Linley earth magic (Chapters 19–20).
As Linley’s invisible companion, Doehring calms him during his magical aptitude test, explains spiritual and elemental training, and supplies experience unavailable to a young provincial student. His instruction extends beyond incantations: he teases Linley about romance, warns him against dangers beyond his strength, identifies valuable materials and artifacts, and evaluates the unfamiliar Dragonblood transformation through practical tests. His knowledge is not infallible—both the Four Supreme Warrior bloodlines and the immense formation surrounding Bloodviolet postdate his era—but his willingness to investigate them alongside Linley turns ancient learning into adaptable mentorship rather than rigid authority (Chapters 31, 51, 72, 94–97).
Revenge, Escape, and Sacrifice
After Hogg’s death, Doehring accepts that Linley must decide his own personal affairs but urges him not to rush blindly into revenge against forces stronger than himself. He continues to serve as an experienced second judgment, recognizing poisons and treasures, assessing Clayde Boleyn’s final testimony, and identifying the Ecclesiastical Tribunal’s coordinated formation when its Special Executors surround Linley and Bebe. His counsel cannot break that formation, but it helps Linley understand the danger and attempt escape rather than surrender to rage or confusion (Chapters 116, 132, 153, 165).
When the six executors exhaust Linley and close in for the kill, Doehring chooses the only intervention still available to him. He leaves the ring, tells Linley that he must now rely on himself, and ignites the spiritual energy of his own soul. The resulting Heavenly Meteor’s Descent drives the attackers away, but the cost is total dissipation. Doehring faces that end calmly because watching Linley mature has given him the grandson and family he never had in life; his final instruction is not magical but personal—Linley must live well after him (Chapter 166).
Appearance and personality
Doehring appears as an elderly man dressed in white robes, with white hair and a flowing white beard. His visible form is a spiritual projection rather than a physical body: only Linley can normally see him, and he can retreat into or emerge from the Coiling Dragon Ring as light. During his final spell, the projection grows translucent as the soul-energy sustaining it is consumed (Chapters 19–20, 51, 166).
He is proud of his former rank and especially of earth-style magic, sometimes resisting any suggestion that another expert knows more than he does. That vanity is softened by humor, curiosity, and deep affection. Doehring jokes about Linley’s romantic awkwardness, becomes excited by unknown formations and bloodlines, and worries openly when Linley risks destroying his own body. His last act reveals that paternal concern, rather than pride or self-preservation, has become his defining loyalty (Chapters 19, 51, 72, 94–97, 132, 166).
Abilities and cultivation
At his height, Doehring is a peak Saint-level Grand Magus specializing in earth magic and ranked among the most powerful figures of the Pouant Empire. His expertise covers elemental essence, spiritual energy, magical formations, creature anatomy, artifacts, and the practical assessment of warriors and magical beasts. As a soul remnant he lacks mageforce and a body, but retains extraordinary spiritual perception, allowing him to identify an interspatial ring immediately and inspect dangers that Linley cannot yet evaluate (Chapters 19–20, 31, 94–97, 153).
His existence within the Coiling Dragon Ring has strict limits. Doehring can manifest only near the ring, remains invisible to ordinary people, and risks detection by Saint-level spiritual senses when outside it. Hiding inside the artifact shields him even from such notice, while his spiritual bond lets him converse mentally with Linley. He cannot restore his destroyed body, and exhausting his remaining mental energy necessarily disperses his soul (Chapters 19–20, 94).
Doehring’s final attack demonstrates the extreme power still contained in that remnant. By igniting his soul, he releases spiritual energy beyond the normal output of a peak Saint and directly gathers earth essence without mageforce. He forms six house-sized meteors that pursue the six Special Executors, breaking their lethal pressure on Linley. The spell succeeds as a rescue but cannot be repeated, because its power is produced by the destruction of the caster’s continued existence (Chapter 166).

Relationships
- Linley Baruch: Linley awakens Doehring from the ring and gives him the familial title he never had in life. Doehring becomes his hidden teacher, adviser, comic companion, and grandfather, then chooses Linley’s survival over the preservation of his own soul (Chapters 19–20, 31, 51, 94–97, 116, 166).
- Bebe: Doehring studies Bebe’s unusual strength and suspects that the Shadowmouse has a connection to a mighty rodent-class power he remembers from his own era. He later treats Bebe and Linley as a pair whose future he is eager to witness, and his final spell rescues both from the Tribunal’s formation (Chapters 95, 165–166).
- Hamelin: This Saint-level Grand Magus is Doehring’s old enemy. Hamelin’s ambush destroys Doehring’s body and his threat of capturing the surviving spirit drives Doehring to bind himself to the ring, indirectly creating the circumstances in which he later meets Linley (Chapter 19).
- Clayde Boleyn: Doehring does not lead Linley’s revenge, but his greater experience helps assess Clayde’s claim about the Radiant Church’s role in the destruction of Linley’s family. Linley’s trust in that judgment helps him accept that Clayde is telling the truth (Chapter 165).
