Coiling Dragon Ring
The Coiling Dragon Ring is a damaged soul-protecting Sovereign artifact formerly belonging to the Azure Dragon ancestor. Linley found the unassuming black ring as a child, made it his constant necklace, and later relied on both its protection and its ability to gather and refine exposed souls. (Chapters 7, 391, 567)
History
Discovery and Doehring Cowart
Eight-year-old Linley found the ring among the ruins of the Baruch ancestral manor. After his blood activated it, the ring released the surviving spirit of Doehring Cowart, whose soul had been sheltered within it; Doehring then used the ring as his residence while teaching Linley. The ring remained a keepsake of their relationship after Doehring expended his soul to save Linley. (Chapters 7, 17–18, 171)
The Azure Dragon relic
Linley eventually learned that the ring was the Azure Dragon ancestor's damaged soul-protecting Sovereign artifact. Its damaged membrane contained a gap that Linley initially had to cover with his own spiritual energy. Following his four-way soul mutation, that strengthened energy gradually repaired the membrane until the ring could provide complete coverage again. (Chapters 391, 567, 710)
Abilities and properties
The ring's primary function is soul protection. While damaged, it left an opening that depended on Linley's own spiritual energy; after the repair, it offered much fuller defense, although an attack from the Chief Sovereign of Wind was still powerful enough to crack its membrane. The ring therefore provides formidable protection rather than absolute immunity to every soul attack. (Chapters 391, 710, 775)
It can also draw in exposed or disembodied souls from roughly a kilometer away and naturally refine them into golden soul essence. It cannot pull souls out of protected living bodies, and Linley could not condense the refined essence into a Golden Soul-Pearl without the necessary expertise in the Edicts of Death. The ring also once carried Azure Dragon blood essence and three drops of water-type Sovereign power; those stored substances were separate resources, not powers generated by the ring itself. (Chapters 391, 393, 461, 567)
Ownership and custody
The artifact was once owned by the Azure Dragon ancestor and was lost after his death. Linley recovered it unknowingly at his ancestral home, blood-bound it, and retained it despite a later attempt by Emanuel to claim the relic. It remained Linley's worn and repaired soul-protecting artifact in the final conflicts of the corpus. (Chapters 7, 17, 567, 710, 775)
