Black Flame Dragon

The Black Flame Dragon, originally named the Black Ark, is a sacred dark-elf flying ship and the flagship inherited by Silvan Doomblade. It serves as transport, mobile workshop, communications platform, and heavy magical weapon for the coalition until conditions beyond the Northern Limit Line force it to turn back.

History

The Doomblade Inheritance

The Black Ark belongs to a Doomblade succession custom in which the family's best daughter inherits the clan and its best son receives the sacred ship, which eventually returns through the matrilineal family line. Silvan inherits it from Lionel Doomblade less than a year before its first present appearance and renames or operates it as the Black Flame Dragon. As its captain, he directs a permanent crew through exuberant launch rituals while the magic engine, anchor, and sails lift the vessel into the air. Even with Silvan's inexperience causing some flight problems, the ship reduces journeys of several days to hours and becomes the coalition's regular long-range transport. (Chapters 96–102)

Expedition Flagship

Under Silvan and his crew, the Black Flame Dragon carries Felicia, In-gong, and their allies between the palace, Karamis, Curtis, the Sky Forest, and the northern mustering grounds. Its onboard communications device can send signals over long distances through a relay of bases, and its substantial facilities include a smithy that Amita uses during the journey. Silvan also carries a tracking device keyed to the ship; when the connection vanishes during the Famine Knight's attack, he can determine only that the ship was destroyed or the link was blocked, demonstrating that the tracker is useful but not infallible. The vessel remains a Doomblade treasure throughout these expeditions—frequent passengers and mission leaders use its services without receiving ownership. Damage, Recovery, and Northern Withdrawal

The Black Flame Dragon joins the defense of the Dark Elves' Palace as a weapons platform, firing a red column from its forward masthead and maneuvering toward a magic stronghold. The demonic god's power initially deflects the shot, while later attacks succeed only within the coalition's combined effort. Lightning eventually strikes the ship and it crash-lands with its black wings broken, though its main body remains relatively unharmed. By the next northern departure it is flying again, proving that it was restored to operation even though the repair itself is not narrated. Its final recorded mission ends at the Northern Limit Line: the cold, wind, and conditions ahead make continued use impractical, so Silvan leaves a minimal operating crew aboard and sends it back to Enger Plains. Abilities and properties

• A magic-power engine, sails, anchor, and trained crew enable sustained flight at roughly two hundred meters in an early voyage and allow the ship to cover in hours distances that normally require days. Weather and crew fatigue still affect its schedule. (Chapters 96, 99, and 175)
• Its dark-elf communication equipment can transmit over considerable distance by relaying signals through established bases. This is communications infrastructure rather than unrestricted contact from any location. (Chapter 143)
• Silvan's tracking device normally points toward the vessel, but a blocked connection is indistinguishable from the ship's destruction. (Chapter 138)
• The ship has a large smithy and enough interior capacity to move the royal coalition and its attendants, though its exact passenger and cargo limits are not stated. (Chapters 99–100, 172–175, and 198)
• Its masthead can fire a large red energy column. Powerful hostile magic can divert the shot, and direct lightning can break the ship's wings and force a crash landing even when the hull survives. (Chapters 190–191)
• The Black Flame Dragon cannot safely carry the expedition through the extreme conditions beyond the Northern Limit Line and requires at least a minimal crew to return under power. (Chapter 204)

Ownership and custody
