Ferocious Eyes

Ferocious Eyes is the chief of the Mighty Fire tribe and great chieftain of the four centaur tribes on Enger Plains. A severe-looking but straightforward ruler, he leads the plains' defense against the casios and recognizes In-gong as Green Wind's representative and the successor of the Great Warrior.

Biography

Defense of Enger Plains

Ferocious Eyes receives In-gong as a royal commander during an abnormal casios migration, explains the threat in direct practical terms, and initially plans to gather all four tribes before striking. When In-gong arrives with a revelation from Green Wind that the casios are already approaching the small temple from an unexpected direction, Ferocious Eyes accepts the local guardian's token without wasting time on how the prince obtained it. He mobilizes immediately, leads the centaurs through the first defense, and adjusts from mounted archery to spear combat as the enemy closes. In-gong's activation of Ainkel's dormant temple magic turns the engagement, and Ferocious Eyes openly credits the prince rather than competing for the victory. (Chapters 45–50)

The chieftain then chooses to accompany the northern reconnaissance because the violence occurred on his land and his presence will reassure the tribes. He selects twenty elite warriors, guides the party toward an ancestral watchtower, and charges Balkarova despite the undead giant's overwhelming power. The expedition costs most of his selected centaurs and leaves him wounded, but he follows In-gong's retreat order and protects the exhausted group. After learning that Green Wind has named In-gong White Eagle's master, Ferocious Eyes pledges the centaurs' support, spends a fortnight clearing the remaining casios beside him, and renews that alliance at their departure. He later welcomes In-gong back to Enger Plains and appears among the supporters at the coronation. (Chapters 53–59, 201–202, and 231)

Appearance and personality

Ferocious Eyes is exceptionally large even among the centaurs. His horse body is heavier than those around him, while his humanoid torso has shoulders described as wide as the plains and is protected by leather armour. His hooded eyes and expressionless face give him a frightening gaze capable of making subordinate centaurs look away. (Chapters 45 and 201)

His manner is blunt, economical, and outwardly severe, but not cruel. Small movements of his eyebrows reveal curiosity and pleasure that his voice does not, and his fellow chiefs are startled when he softens toward In-gong after the temple victory. He is also responsible toward all four tribes: his decision to scout north is motivated by their security, and he accepts retreat once further fighting would waste lives. (Chapters 45, 50, 53, and 58)

Powers and abilities

Centaur combat and aura

Ferocious Eyes fights as both a mounted archer and a spear-wielding shock combatant. He directs successive volleys while the casios remain at range, switches weapons before the collision, and surrounds himself with blue aura during close fighting. He is conspicuous even at a distance while cutting through casios and can continue commanding after suffering serious wounds. The corpus does not name his aura techniques or explain their mechanics, and Balkarova demonstrates his limit by exhausting and injuring him despite allied support. (Chapters 47, 50, 54, and 56–58)

Tribal command and local knowledge

As great chieftain, Ferocious Eyes coordinates the Mighty Fire, Heavy Winds, Heavy Rain, and Rough Night tribes. He understands their seasonal enemy, the geography at the edge of Enger Plains, and the route to the ancestral watchtower. His authority lets him mobilize warriors quickly and bind the tribes to In-gong's cause, but he remains responsive to Green Wind's religious authority and to new battlefield information rather than treating his own plan as absolute. (Chapters 45–46, 53, 55, and 58–59)

Relationships

  • In-gong: Ferocious Eyes begins as a reserved local commander evaluating a young prince, then comes to trust In-gong after the temple defense and the recognition by Green Wind. He declares that the centaurs will answer In-gong's call and later welcomes him back as an established ally. (Chapters 45–50, 58–59, and 201)
  • Green Wind: Green Wind is the guardian revered by the centaurs. Ferocious Eyes accepts her revelation, is astonished to hear her voice, and treats her selection of In-gong as sufficient authority to recognize him as the Great Warrior's successor. (Chapters 46, 53, and 58–59)
  • Felicia: Ferocious Eyes accepts Felicia's participation in the northern investigation, fights beside her, and entrusts his wounded warriors to her healing. In-gong later leaves Felicia in his protection while visiting White Eagle's tomb. (Chapters 53–58)

Items

Ferocious Eyes uses an ordinary bow for mounted volleys and a spear for close combat. Neither weapon receives a name, special origin, or supernatural property, and the corpus does not establish any notable personal artifact in his custody. (Chapters 47 and 54–56)
