Ainkel

Ainkel was the Watcher and elder dragon of life whose magic transformed the Enger Plains. Although she died in the war against the Four Riders of the Apocalypse, portions of her soul, power, memory, and dragon heart outlasted her body and continued to influence Green Wind, In-gong, and the defense of the world.

Biography

Fragments of the Watcher

Ainkel historically used life magic to turn a desert into the Enger Plains and laid a second spell to defend the region. After her bodily death, one self-reliant fragment of her soul gave birth to Green Wind, who became a separate person while remaining the central mechanism sustaining the plains' life spell. Ainkel's temple magic could also summon treants, allowing Felicia to redirect those guardians toward the defense of the temple and the surrounding land. (Chapters 51, 59, and 157)

Another remnant encountered In-gong through Ainkel's dragon heart. Rather than reject him, its remaining power accepted him and was entirely spent reconstructing his flesh and spirit, leaving him with a dragon heart and access to her life-aligned strength. In-gong's later vision of Ainkel as a mountain-sized green dragon was an image retained from that encounter, while the voice within the dragon heart explicitly identified itself as a fragment of memory and personality rather than the living Ainkel. Legacy against Destruction

The record of Recorder Torres reveals Ainkel's final living struggle one thousand years earlier. She and Torres fought Conquest and War, were defeated, and Ainkel died from the battle. Before dying, however, she recognized that Conquest mourned destruction and did not truly want the world's end. Her judgment persuaded Torres to risk freeing Conquest from that fate, making Ainkel's sympathy a decisive influence on the plan that eventually produced a Conquest Knight who could defend the world. Ainkel's later agency therefore belongs to a divided legacy, not a restored body. Green Wind acts independently, one fragment remained beside Enkidu, the dragon heart carried power and will into In-gong, and another portion associated with Torres was lost during the ancient event. These remnants help awaken and unify elder-dragon power for the final confrontation, but the corpus never presents them as a complete resurrection of Ainkel; even after her body is broken and soul fragmented, only her residual will sometimes reaches In-gong. Appearance and personality

Ainkel's remembered dragon form is immense, larger than a mountain, with green scales and green eyes. Her presence is calm and warm rather than threatening. This description comes through In-gong's retained image and a magical reconstruction of that memory; the later humanoid forms resembling Green Wind are representations created within visions, not evidence that Ainkel normally possessed Green Wind's appearance. Legends call Ainkel the benevolent mother of the Enger Plains and portray her as a saintly figure who granted peace within her territory. Her recorded choices support that reputation: she enriched and protected the plains, accepted In-gong rather than resisting him, and showed compassion even toward Conquest. War's description of her as “hateful” reflects an enemy's hostility toward that intervention, not a neutral account of her character. (Chapters 48, 51, 170, 174, and 204)

Powers and abilities

Ainkel held the elder-dragon authority of life. Her large-scale spells could create abundance by imitating the indigenous species' magic, turn desert into fertile grassland, maintain that ecosystem through Green Wind, and protect the region through wards and summoned treants. The enriched lands also functioned as seals, so the environmental transformation served both cultivation and world defense. These persistent systems survive their caster but depend on intermediaries and established magical structures. (Chapters 51, 59, and 218)

Her soul, dragon heart, and residual magic could reconstruct In-gong's damaged flesh and spirit, confer a dragon heart, and later contribute power and will through elder-dragon equipment. These effects do not mean Ainkel is alive or acting at full strength: fragments possess incomplete memory or independent identities, one expends all its stored power in the reconstruction, and Green Wind is explicitly distinct from her source. The surviving mechanisms preserve portions of Ainkel's authority while sharply limiting her direct agency. (Chapters 48, 132, 157, 223, 226, and 229)

• Green Wind: Green Wind was born when a self-reliant fragment of Ainkel's soul developed into an independent guardian. She is closely linked to Ainkel's life spell and inheritance but is not Ainkel resurrected, possessing her own identity, loyalties, and choices. (Chapters 45, 51, 132, and 157)
• In-gong: Ainkel's dragon-heart remnant accepts In-gong, reconstructs him, and leaves him with life power that becomes part of his Dragon Warrior inheritance. Her residual will later reaches him through the fragmented legacy assembled for the final battle. (Chapters 48, 56, 132, 170, 226, and 229)
• Enkidu: Ainkel and Enkidu embodied opposing life and destruction powers. Enkidu initially rejected her interpretation of Conquest, yet a fragment of her soul later remains beside him as he awakens and chooses to support the world's defenders. (Chapters 96, 170–171, 204, and 223)
• Queian: Ainkel and Queian were fellow elder dragons committed to maintaining the world, but they judged Conquest differently: Ainkel sympathized with the rider, while Queian remained distrustful. Their surviving powers ultimately converge through In-gong and the elder-dragon equipment. (Chapters 170, 226–227)
