Zhang Siyun
Zhang Siyun is a leading chosen of Emperor-Receiving Prefecture and a resentful rival of Xu Qing. He later becomes a physical doppelgänger through which Crimson Mother awakens. The two identities remain distinct: divine occupation and transformation do not retroactively make Zhang Siyun the god.
Biography
Coalition and Swordsage Calling
Zhang Siyun enters as the Supreme Arbiter Immortal Society’s dao child, publicly regarded as the strongest chosen of his generation in Emperor-Receiving Prefecture. His standing, his mother Yao Yunhui’s protection, and his history of surpassing Master Shengyun give him an institutional confidence that clashes with Xu Qing’s rapid rise during swordsage selection. (Chapters 348–395)
His rivalry becomes entangled with clan maneuvering and personal resentment. Xu Qing treats summons connected to Zhang Siyun and the Yao Clan as possible traps, while Zhang Siyun increasingly experiences Xu Qing not as one competitor among many but as an obstacle to status and recognition. That fixation leaves him vulnerable to powers whose aims are much larger than the selection itself. (Chapters 395–425)
War for Sea-Sealing County
By the county war, Zhang Siyun’s body has changed grotesquely: red veins cover him and he visibly suffers as divine influence takes hold. Crimson Mother later manifests using his physical form, whose transformed mouth, teeth, and hair-like tongue display hēr hunger. The body is a doppelgänger vessel, but the narrative continues to distinguish the god’s agency from Zhang Siyun’s prior identity. (Chapters 517, 525)
Once that transformation occurs, other characters compare threats to “someone like Zhang Siyun” while separately noting Crimson Mother’s state. The language records what his body became without turning his earlier ambitions into divine motive. His rivalry and chosen status are effectively consumed by a process he does not control, making the transformation a loss of continuity rather than an advancement he masters. (Chapters 525, 535)
Moonrite aftermath
Moonrite events repeatedly use Zhang Siyun’s transformation as a reference point for the signs of Crimson Mother’s power. Those comparisons also establish scale: when the true god appears, hēr might far surpasses what emerged through Zhang Siyun, like a full moon compared with a firefly. The vessel reproduces features and authority without equaling its source. (Chapters 560, 704)
After the confrontation, Xu Qing declines to take Zhang Siyun’s flesh and blood, though he accepts the violet thorn associated with the remains. This final custody distinction matters: the body is not treated as a surviving person or as Xu Qing’s property, and the taken artifact does not collapse Zhang Siyun into either Crimson Mother or the character who receives it. (Chapter 712)
Later record
The imperial-capital account describes the earlier opening of Forbidden by the Immortal as the occasion when Crimson Mother awakened in Zhang Siyun’s form to devour the god inside. Afterward, humanity regained control of the forbidden ground and Seventh Prince removed many treasures. Zhang Siyun persists in history primarily as the named vessel of that event, not as an active later participant. (Chapter 723)
Appearance and personality
Before transformation, Zhang Siyun is presented as an elite chosen whose pride rests on status, talent, and family backing. Resentment toward Xu Qing narrows his judgment. Later, his face and body become crossed with painful red veins and then assume the monstrous features of Crimson Mother’s doppelgänger, a physical condition that should not be mistaken for his original appearance or voluntary personality. (Chapters 348–425, 517–525)
Abilities and cultivation
Zhang Siyun begins with the cultivation and reputation of a top prefectural chosen and qualified swordsage candidate. His later godly form possesses only a fraction of Crimson Mother’s true might. Because the form arises through divine transformation, its hunger and anatomy are not reliable evidence of techniques Zhang Siyun independently learned or controlled. (Chapters 348, 517–535, 704)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Core chosen with a life lamp | 348 | First exact profile places him at Gold Core with four heavenly palaces, a life lamp, and an imperial-class seed. |
| Crimson Mother doppelgänger | 512 | Divine parasitism transforms him into a godly host retaining his human memories and substructure; the authority is borrowed rather than independently cultivated. |
| Doppelgänger power withdrawn | 525 | Crimson Mother's true form removes most of the host's energy before entering Cruelmurk, leaving the reduced doppelgänger behind. |
| Captured divine remnant | 711 | Xu Qing and the Captain receive the surviving Zhang Siyun doppelgänger after the Moonrite battle; the true god's death does not restore his former human progression. |
Relationships
- Xu Qing: Zhang Siyun treats Xu Qing as a rival and grows resentful as Xu Qing surpasses him; Xu Qing later refuses to take his remains. (Chapters 348–425, 712)
- Yao Yunhui: Zhang Siyun’s mother intervenes to defend his interests and connects his rivalry to the Yao Clan. (Chapter 395)
- Crimson Mother: Crimson Mother uses Zhang Siyun’s transformed body as a doppelgänger vessel. The god and the original chosen remain distinct identities. (Chapters 517–535, 704, 723)
Items
No separately cataloged personal item is consistently associated with Zhang Siyun. The violet thorn taken after his death belongs to the surrounding divine transformation and is not cataloged as proof of ownership over his remains.
