Huang Yan

Huang Yan is Xu Qing’s warmhearted friend from Seven Blood Eyes and the devoted partner of Second Highness. He first appears as an ordinary pudgy disciple, but is eventually revealed as the human clone through which Flame Phoenix, the ancient ruler and protector of South Phoenix, pursued the person he loved.

Biography

Meeting Xu Qing

Huang Yan first meets Xu Qing in a medicine shop, where he buys medicinal plants without understanding their proper handling because he has spent years obtaining gifts for the woman he calls Elder Sister. When Xu Qing explains the uses of condensing spirit leaves, Huang Yan immediately gives him several. The shopkeeper identifies him as a long-persistent pursuer of love and warns that his harmless appearance should not be mistaken for simplicity. (Chapter 57)

Their friendship takes shape after Xu Qing saves him from a poisoned dagger during a violent dispute between the Pilot Assistance and Dispatch Divisions. Huang Yan tracks Xu Qing down to thank him, shares an extraordinary egg, gives him valuable dharmaboat materials, and talks openly about his hopes with Elder Sister. Later, he provides carefully researched intelligence for the Merfolk competition, treating Xu Qing as a brother and urging him to value survival and profit over reputation. (Chapters 69–70, 111)

Second Highness and Harbor 176

Huang Yan’s devotion to Second Highness guides nearly every major choice of his early sect life. He uses his wealth to buy Xu Qing’s Spirit Breath Lamp as a gift for her, paying with spirit notes and a valuable defensive hauberk without bargaining down their friendship. After Seven Blood Eyes establishes Harbor 176, he also arranges for the Pilot Assistance Division to open a branch there, supporting the harbor in which Xu Qing and his friends have invested. When Yanyan attacks the Pilot Assistance Division to force a confrontation, Huang Yan hurries there and Xu Qing intervenes on his behalf. Huang Yan apologizes for the danger, offers compensation, and admits that Xu Qing is the first real friend he has made after years centered entirely on Elder Sister. He then openly supports Xu Qing’s enforcement of sect law, even when Second Highness arrives and asks for leniency toward her close friend. (Chapters 200–202)

Coalition life and return to South Phoenix

In the Eight Sect Coalition, Huang Yan remains part of Xu Qing’s familiar circle while preparing an anniversary gift for Second Highness. He asks Zhang San to turn the Spirit Breath Lamp’s flame into a hairpin, choosing a personal gift rather than something whose expense might burden its recipient. His reaction to the Captain’s plans involving Flame Phoenix hints at concealed stakes, but he does not reveal his true identity during that conversation. (Chapter 276)

Huang Yan eventually leaves the coalition with Second Highness for South Phoenix, a place where he has always felt more at home. He embraces Xu Qing goodbye and promises that his friend will be safe if he ever returns there. During the voyage, he can sense Xu Qing watching through the Seven Blood Eyes taboo treasure, a perception that the same remote gaze failed to provoke from ordinary targets and that further indicates power far beyond his apparent cultivation. Flame Phoenix revealed

When Xu Qing visits South Phoenix before traveling to the imperial capital, Huang Yan waits for him at the boundary of Forbidden by the Phoenix. The two sit together as they did in their youth, share eggs, and discuss Second Highness’s long pregnancy. Huang Yan explains that his kind are preheaven spirits and expects the gestation to last decades. Neither man needs to ask the identity question directly; Xu Qing decides that Huang Yan’s friendship matters more than naming the secret. (Chapter 741)

Before Xu Qing departs, Huang Yan gives him fruit to deliver to a younger sister and a feather that will draw her attention, thereby extending his protection beyond South Phoenix. After Xu Qing leaves, Huang Yan fades and enormous eyes open in the forbidden ground, confirming the connection between the friendly disciple and its ruler. Protector during the holy-land crisis

After Xu Qing’s resurrection, Master Seventh tasks Huang Yan with accompanying him through the Forbidden Sea. Huang Yan complains about being separated from Second Highness, but he stays with Xu Qing, monitors his dangerous tempering, and reacts immediately when sect disciples are threatened. He transforms into Flame Phoenix, carries the pair across the sea, and joins Xu Qing in destroying the summoned godly entity that angered Second Highness. (Chapters 967–968)

When Xu Qing later disappears into Floating Fiend’s custody, Huang Yan mobilizes as Flame Phoenix rather than remaining an observer. He searches the sea, joins the coalition surrounding the Vivifiend holy land, declares South Phoenix at war, burns the enemy stronghold, and follows Xu Qing and Chen Erniu through the tracking vortex to confront Floating Fiend. His protection is both personal loyalty and the military action of South Phoenix’s ruler. (Chapters 986–993)

Golden Crow, homecoming, and the Sageheaven Pagoda

Huang Yan remains beside Xu Qing during the appearance of Golden Crow’s dragon chariot, watching seriously as Xu Qing receives its legacy. When Yu Liuchen intends to take Xu Qing into the outer sea as bait, Huang Yan challenges the situation, accepts Xu Qing’s right to decide, and offers to find another solution if Xu Qing does not truly wish to go. His restraint preserves his friend’s agency without withdrawing protection. (Chapters 997–998)

He later meets Xu Qing at the inner-sea boundary, returns him safely to Seven Blood Eyes, and reunites with Second Highness at the harbor. Soon afterward, Zhang San requests Flame Phoenix’s extraordinary fire to refine a mysterious pagoda into a dreadnaught. Huang Yan agrees, contributes god flesh and sustained flame to the month-long project, and helps create a vessel capable of traversing the stars before Xu Qing departs again. (Chapters 1007–1010)

Appearance and personality

In human form Huang Yan is introduced as a fair-skinned, freckled young man whose pudgy body strains an ordinary gray robe. He carries a large sack, enjoys drinking from unusual eggs, and commonly pats his belly or grins when pleased. His revealed true form is the colossal eagle- or phoenix-like Flame Phoenix, whose fire-darkened presence can obscure the sky and dominate the Forbidden Sea. (Chapters 57, 70, 968)

Huang Yan is generous, sociable, loyal, and utterly devoted to Second Highness. His talk about romance can be comic or self-aggrandizing, but his behavior is consistent: he spends years giving gifts, chooses humility for her sake, supports her family, and protects the friends she values. Abilities and cultivation

Flame Phoenix incarnation

Huang Yan is the manifested human identity of Flame Phoenix rather than merely a disciple connected to the creature. He can change from his human clone into the immense phoenix form, project divine will over great distances, detect otherwise concealed observation, and exercise authority over Forbidden by the Phoenix and South Phoenix. The exact language of an ordinary cultivation realm does not adequately describe this preheaven spirit. (Chapters 384, 502, 741, 968)

Fire and godly combat

His flame can refine materials that Zhang San cannot otherwise process, burn through sea and holy-land defenses, and overwhelm godly entities. During the Vivifiend conflict he projects a sea of fire that targets the enemy while leaving allied forces unharmed, then manifests again while pursuing Floating Fiend. These feats demonstrate precise control as well as vast destructive range. (Chapters 986, 991–993, 1009–1010)

Protection and perception

Huang Yan can hear speech from afar, perceive Xu Qing’s gaze through a taboo treasure, arrive rapidly across the Forbidden Sea, and use his standing among powerful beings to create safe routes for friends. His protection also operates through relationships: he sends Xu Qing to Empress Spirit Aurora with a recognizing feather and fruit, and makes South Phoenix an explicit refuge for Xu Qing.
