Chen Erniu

Chen Erniu, usually called the Captain, is Master Seventh’s eldest disciple and Xu Qing’s senior sect brother. He hides an ancient, repeatedly reincarnated existence beneath the manner of a shameless opportunist. His “big jobs” pursue god flesh, lost inheritances, and pieces of his own past, yet he consistently makes room for Xu Qing in those plans and repeatedly converts private greed into victories that protect their brotherhood or overturn the designs of gods.

Biography

Seven Blood Eyes and the Forbidden Sea

Chen Erniu first meets Xu Qing as the captain of Celestial Bureau Unit Six in the Seven Blood Eyes Violent Crimes Division. He requests the dangerous new recruit for his understaffed unit, teaches him the city’s lethal unwritten rules, and advises him to cultivate two dispositions: one suitable for ordinary dealings and another for killing. Although Xu Qing senses that the friendly, apple-eating young man is concealing his real cultivation, Erniu neither forces trust nor reveals himself. Instead, he offers practical protection, profitable work, and enough freedom for Xu Qing to judge him by his actions. (Chapters 55–67)

That working relationship becomes a partnership because Erniu recognizes Xu Qing’s caution and private code rather than trying to soften either. He steers Xu Qing away from an open confrontation with a protected Merfolk captain, quietly supplies information that permits a safer reckoning, and shares Unit Six’s rewards. His greed is genuine—he inflates debts and constantly looks for profit—but it is paired with a sharp awareness of institutional danger. Xu Qing gradually learns that Erniu’s jokes often conceal warnings and that his apparent laziness can mask extensive preparation. (Chapters 67, 96–117)

The Merfolk campaign reveals the scale of Erniu’s appetite. He gives Xu Qing valuable Foundation Establishment pills and Zhang San a coveted blueprint, then asks them to guard a flesh portal while he risks entering the seafloor remains of the godly entity Joine. Erniu describes the gamble as fun, but the exchange shows calculation as well as recklessness: he pays his partners first, sets a time limit after which they should abandon him, and personally accepts the fatal part of the operation. The exploit establishes the pattern for his later plans—rare divine material, layered preparation, and survival treated as negotiable if the prize is large enough. (Chapters 122–130)

His seemingly ordinary body also proves expendable. When enemies place a vast bounty on him, Erniu allows portions of himself to be claimed and sold, turning bodily injury into resources because his regenerative methods make the loss temporary. The apparent absurdity has a serious consequence for Xu Qing: it confirms that the Captain’s identity cannot be equated with one set of limbs or one visible cultivation base. By the time Master Seventh formally accepts Xu Qing, Erniu stands openly as the Seventh Peak’s eldest disciple, transforming his first role as a workplace superior into the more durable bond of senior sect brother. Coalition and Swordsage calling

After Seven Blood Eyes joins the Eight Sect Coalition, Erniu remains the irreverent eldest apprentice in a household of dangerous schemers. He competes with his siblings, needles Master Seventh, and pursues opportunities that appear ridiculous until their hidden value becomes clear. He also accepts Xu Qing as Fourth Sib without trying to preserve his old authority as Unit Six captain. Their hierarchy becomes affectionate rather than restrictive: Erniu insists on the dignity of being Eldest Brother, while increasingly treating Xu Qing as the only reliable partner for undertakings that could kill either of them. Both brothers answer the swordsage calling, but Erniu’s conduct is shaped by a history that the assessors cannot easily measure. He conceals much of himself during trials, survives encounters with godly phenomena, and is taken away with Xu Qing by Sir Bloodsmelter after the selection. His relatively unimpressive public signs contrast with the knowledge and instincts he later displays, reinforcing that formal rankings describe only the current body and what Erniu chooses to show. Becoming a swordsage nevertheless matters: it connects his private appetite for dangerous expeditions to an institution whose mission is the defense of humankind. (Chapters 327–370)

In Sea-Sealing County, Erniu follows Xu Qing into prison work, Black Guard conflict, and the secrets surrounding D-132. He can be flippant around terrifying prisoners and willing to turn danger into a performance, but he does not abandon Xu Qing when the prison erupts into crises involving godly forces. Instead, his familiarity with obscure histories helps the pair distinguish an opportunity from a death trap. The experience broadens their partnership from sect intrigue into matters involving imperial prisons, forbidden regions, and entities whose existence predates their current lives. (Chapters 386–437)

The journey into Ten Entrails of the True Immortal makes Erniu’s reincarnational continuity explicit. He guides the party through events he recognizes despite never having visited the place “in this life,” then searches for Aalloh’s Nightmare with longing rather than ordinary curiosity. He drags Ning Yan to the needed threshold and trusts Xu Qing to follow with Qing Qiu, accepting that his senior brother’s concealed goal has placed all four at risk. The revelation corrects the earlier impression of Erniu as merely an unusually resilient human: his current personality and loyalties continue across lives, while the bodies, cultivation levels, and disguises through which he acts can change. War for Sea-Sealing County

Inside the Woe-Immortal nightmare, Erniu pursues a plan built on knowledge from another life while protecting the group’s ability to keep moving. He pressures Ning Yan for lineage information, feeds him a prepared substance when the nightmare begins consuming their bodies, and works with Xu Qing through dangers that erase flesh rather than merely wound it. The gamble is not altruistic, but neither is it solitary: Erniu has selected companions whose abilities make survival possible, and his choices force Ning Yan’s concealed heritage into the open while giving the party a path toward the extraordinary fortune he remembers. The expedition ultimately leads through Emperor Ancient Spirit’s corpse-world and the crisis surrounding Ling’er. Erniu’s priorities remain divided between acquisition and brotherhood, yet when Xu Qing needs to bring Ling’er home, he continues acting as partner rather than competitor. His dealings with Nethersprite introduce a lasting moral complication: he takes and confines her through coercive means, and her repeated hostility makes clear that this is captivity, not ownership or willing companionship. Her continuing presence also demonstrates the consequences of Erniu’s schemes extending long after the immediate treasure hunt ends. (Chapters 467–474, 491–522)

During the Sea-Sealing war, Erniu develops a reputation among the swordsages by making friends across the front and by retrieving the bodies of fallen soldiers during lulls in the fighting. That duty does not offer the spectacular reward he usually advertises, but he performs it often enough that nearly every survivor knows Chen Erniu. The work reveals a social strength distinct from his divine schemes: he breaks through grim formality, keeps connections across units, and serves a necessary role amid mass death without demanding the public authority that increasingly gathers around Xu Qing. When the lieutenant governor’s conspiracy reaches its climax, Erniu supports Xu Qing’s effort to expose the truth and survives the collision of war, forbidden-ground power, and Torchlight planning. He does not replace Xu Qing’s judgment or claim the county’s gratitude; instead, he keeps their sect-family network moving and reconnects with Master Seventh’s preparations. By the time he proposes the next “big job,” Sea-Sealing has confirmed that he can operate inside a collective cause without ceasing to be the hungry, secretive adventurer who first recruited Xu Qing. Moonrite and the Red Moon

Erniu takes Xu Qing into Moonrite with a plan much older and larger than their public identities. He uses disguises, manipulates Ning Yan and Wu Jianwu into useful roles, and crosses the Heavenfire Sea in search of a bronze coffin tied to Imperial Sovereign Li Zihua’s children. The dangerous comedy conceals a precise objective: awaken the ancient siblings, learn what is required to challenge Crimson Mother, and assemble forces that can survive the coming sacrificial cycle. His planning makes the Green Spirit Pharmacy possible even when Xu Qing becomes its more visible center. (Chapters 551–581)

At the pharmacy and in the Moonrebel Congregation, Erniu alternates between support, provocation, and secret preparation. He lets Xu Qing’s Pill Nine identity accumulate faith while cultivating his own access to Paramount Temple, and he turns staged performances into a way to expose suppressed history. His role as Grand Dancer looks comic and degrading, but the performance helps reconstruct the truth that the Cathedral has erased. The consequence is political as well as personal: scattered resisters acquire a common story, and Erniu’s appetite for spectacle becomes a weapon against the isolation on which divine rule depends. As Crimson Mother’s mortal husk closes over the Bitter Life Mountains, Erniu and Xu Qing open Paramount Temple and become joint Archbishops of Moonrebel. The office brings power, faith, and responsibility; Erniu accepts all three despite habitually presenting himself as interested only in treasure. Together they unseal old resisters and turn the Moonrebel Congregation from a refuge of statues into an active domain treasure. The choice converts their private infiltration into a public commitment to the region, giving exhausted cultivators a reason and a structure through which to resist. (Chapters 670–682)

During the final struggle, Erniu controls bodies, flesh, and prepared devices while Xu Qing contests divine authority and destiny. Their methods differ, but their coordination lets them seize opportunities created by Li Zihua’s ancient plan and the Heir Apparent’s family. Crimson Mother’s fall leaves Erniu with gains he has pursued for multiple lives, yet it also frees Moonrite from the cycle of sacrifice. His development is not a rejection of greed; rather, the arc shows how thoroughly his greed has become entangled with Xu Qing’s goals and with his own willingness to oppose gods who treat whole regions as food. Imperial capital and the Firemoon Great Hunt

After returning from Moonrite, Erniu spends time away from Xu Qing pursuing preparations in the imperial capital, then reappears when his junior brother has revived the Xeno-Immortal School. He obtains the Wordless Book and gathers materials for a plan in Firemoon territory, insisting that Xu Qing accompany him once the imperial situation permits. His information is partly outdated, and his previous-life offenses make revealing his identity among the Firemoons dangerous, but those limits do not weaken his confidence. They explain why he relies on disguise, the Book’s concealment, and Xu Qing’s growing strength. (Chapters 732–778, 804–818)

In the Great Hunt, Erniu turns opponents into fruit, consumes their flesh, and recovers power as seals within him loosen. He helps Xu Qing seize forbidden mountains and stands with humans when Crown Prince Brightsouth demands submission. His unusually formal refusal is rooted in dignity rather than profit: even while his body melts under divine pressure, he will not exchange human standing for safety. The stand exposes a more solemn self beneath the tricks, and the melancholy that follows suggests memories and obligations extending far beyond the current hunt. (Chapters 819–840)

Erniu then separates from Xu Qing to pursue Sir Firedark, deliberately drawing a superior opponent through the Mountain and Sea Region while gathering ingredients of his own. He survives bodily destruction, reunites in the masterless god domain, and uses knowledge from a previous visit to guide the pair through its hazards. His willingness to become a blue worm in a bottle or let his body explode reflects practical continuity rather than suicidal indifference: no single manifestation is the whole of him, but each loss still consumes power and can leave him vulnerable. (Chapters 841–892)

At the emperor’s corpse, Erniu and Xu Qing seize the god domain’s destiny while the three Firemoon gods pursue Flawless ascension. Erniu controls the corpse’s flesh, forges words from the Wordless Book and living portal hairs in the domain’s furnace, and prepares the escape route for a still greater theft. The Great Hunt therefore becomes only the final staging ground for the plan he has built across Crimson Mother’s fall and the Firemoon gods’ ceremony. His definition of success is characteristically extreme: not merely winning the hunt, but reaching the broken face itself. (Chapters 893–902)

Holy lands and human ascension

When the Firemoon domain rises, Erniu reveals that his true target is the flesh and blood of the broken face. He has accumulated Crimson Mother’s flesh, living hairs, concealed words, an emperor’s corpse, and the guidance of a heavenly dao so that he and Xu Qing can teleport outside Revered Ancient at the one viable moment. The plan is terrifying even to gods, but Erniu asks Xu Qing to choose rather than compelling him. Once Xu Qing agrees, they act in complete coordination and accept the destruction of their borrowed body to reach a sea-sized drop of blood. (Chapters 903–906)

The theft nearly destroys them. Erniu’s preparation secures blood and other material, while Master Seventh’s intervention prevents the consequences from becoming final and throws the brothers into distant territory. Erniu immediately turns fear back into banter, but his concern for their master remains visible beneath his boasting. He also acknowledges that his own past has included a relationship with Moonfire, calling her “Little Moonie” and himself her “Niuniu”; later divine reactions support a real connection, though the exact history and which life it belongs to remain incompletely explained. Erniu and Xu Qing then manipulate Feng Lintao and competing treasure-seekers through a chain of false identities and mutually suspicious bargains. Erniu presents their partnership as the “Qing and Niu” combination, using fraud, pursuit, and sudden reversal to ensure they are not the prey in someone else’s plan. The schemes recover resources and carry them back toward human lands, but they also show a development in their balance: Xu Qing now detects Erniu’s evasions and contributes deceptions of his own, so Eldest Brother can no longer direct the performance unilaterally. (Chapters 914–928)

As the holy lands arrive and the human empress rises, Erniu is not the central public champion, yet he remains tied to the consequences of the brothers’ divine theft and to Xu Qing’s path. Their later journey into the outer sea brings them before an old human whose power exceeds their understanding. Erniu immediately recognizes enough danger to call himself “Fur Monster,” suppress his usual bravado, and help tend the elder’s fire. The encounter removes a hidden curse from both brothers and confirms that Erniu has lived many human lives, while leaving the ultimate origin of those lives unresolved. (Chapters 950, 955, 1000–1002)

Fifth Star Ring and immortal trials

The outer-sea encounter opens Erniu’s awareness of the Fifth Star Ring without making him explain everything he already knows. When Xu Qing presses him, Erniu distracts him by swallowing indestructible hemp threads directly through an opened abdomen. The evasion is comic, but Xu Qing respects it as a deliberate boundary around ancient knowledge. The brothers proceed together until larger events and separate opportunities pull them onto different paths, each accepting that the other’s objectives cannot always be shared or explained in advance. (Chapters 1003–1019, 1061–1074)

During the wars between star rings, Erniu follows his own devouring path rather than Xu Qing’s immortal cultivation. He infiltrates a god’s body and uses a self-named heaven-devouring incantation to consume from within, refusing a conveniently placed portal because he recognizes it as an attempt to lure him away from his meal. The choice costs him awareness of the wider war but advances the method most natural to him: acquiring power through dangerous consumption, surviving inside the enemy, and emerging only after the divine body begins to dissipate. (Chapters 1207–1209, 1281–1284)

Reunited with Xu Qing in the Fourth Star Ring, Erniu restores his body and reaches mid Imperial Sovereign by undoing internal seals rather than cultivating in an ordinary progression. Xu Qing sees an ancient blue structure beneath his flesh and notes both its resemblance to sourcefiends and important differences. Erniu’s successive lives take different forms, a pattern reminiscent of gods, but the source does not equate him with a sourcefiend. His current cultivation is therefore a recovered portion of a much older existence, and each unsealing carries an increasing price. (Chapters 1284, 1293–1294)

Erniu seeks that price and opportunity in a forbidden region holding half of God Lord Death Departure’s corpse. He becomes innumerable blue worms, endures repeated destruction, and spreads through the corpse while Xu Qing suppresses its defenses. When the returning God Lord drives them out, Erniu has Xu Qing rip out and throw his heart as a freezing weapon. The brutal cooperation demonstrates their mature trust: Erniu volunteers the body part and Xu Qing acts without hesitation because both understand that preserving the deeper continuity matters more than protecting one temporary human shell. (Chapters 1293–1296)

The resulting space-time collapse separates them into parallel fragments. When Xu Qing finally finds Erniu, his senior brother is weeping like a lost child after seeing memories of his first two lives. Erniu never reveals what happened in those lives, and the sorrow remains even after he regains his smile. He asks to return to Revered Ancient and nestles into Xu Qing’s hair as a blue worm. The moment exposes the cost concealed by his reincarnations: continuity preserves skill and purpose, but it also preserves grief that repeated new bodies have not erased. (Chapters 1296, 1305–1306)

Return to Revered Ancient and the final war

Erniu races ahead of Xu Qing when their party returns to Revered Ancient, loudly announcing the “Qing and Niu” combination before the assembled species. His attempt to seize the grand entrance is soon eclipsed by Xu Qing’s Immortal-level return, but he accepts the familiar comic role without resentment. He reunites with Master Seventh and stands with the sect family during the ancient immortal crisis, recovering the home and relationships he had mourned in the space-time fragment. (Chapters 1313–1324)

He then leads Xu Qing and Master Seventh into Brilliant Heaven, where his deeper body has already been active. Erniu had found the dismembered parts of the Brilliant Heaven god emperor, broken through their seals, reassembled them in an ocean of god blood, and divided himself into worms to devour the body continuously. What begins as an effort to gain godsource and strengthen himself for Master Seventh becomes a gift for Xu Qing: Erniu wants the origin light inside the emperor because it can advance his junior brother. (Chapters 1329–1334)

The god emperor attempts to use Erniu’s consumption as a return ceremony, but Erniu reveals that he anticipated betrayal. He takes control of the emperor’s left hand, tears the origin light from the chest, throws it to Xu Qing, and only then calls for rescue. With Xu Qing and Master Seventh suppressing the resistance, Erniu resumes fusion until his blue flesh replaces the divine body. He sinks into a deep sleep, gaining the god emperor’s vessel while freeing the ancient consciousness from its old prison and giving Xu Qing access to Brilliant Heaven’s foundational secret. (Chapters 1334–1336)

Three centuries later, Xu Qing understands that Erniu’s origin is connected not to a primeval motherworld but to the Living God Umbilical Cord. Zi Qing’s account of that path also places a shriveled blue worm beside an ancient corpse and violet crystal, but the exact identity and chronology remain unresolved. When Erniu awakens, he finds that Xu Qing has already become a paragon. Rather than withdraw, he joins Xu Qing and Plumdark in walking the Umbilical Cord, returning to blue-worm form on Xu Qing’s shoulder and declaring that, however many attempts came before, this one will succeed. (Chapter 1354)

Appearance and personality

Erniu first appears as a young human man whose concealed cultivation makes Xu Qing instinctively wary. He usually wears the clothing appropriate to his current role and is frequently seen eating an apple, peach, or other fruit. His visible form is not permanent: he can lose limbs, rebuild an entire human body, become a swarm of blue worms, or hide as a single worm in Xu Qing’s hair. At higher levels of unsealing, an ancient blue, ice-like structure is visible beneath his flesh. (Chapters 55, 181–203, 880, 1293–1296)

He is gregarious, shameless, theatrical, greedy, and exceptionally patient when a sufficiently large prize is involved. Erniu exaggerates debts, flatters terrifying beings, and jealously guards his status as Eldest Brother, but he also makes friends across battlefronts and pays partners before asking them to share his risks. His humor is often a method of controlling fear. The grief exposed by memories of his first two lives demonstrates that his frivolity coexists with ancient sorrow rather than proving that he lacks emotional depth. Abilities and cultivation

Reincarnation, seals, and bodily continuity

Erniu has lived numerous lives in different forms while preserving a continuous sense of self. His knowledge of places he has not visited in his present life, his memories of old Firemoon events, and the curse detected by the outer-sea elder all confirm that the current Chen Erniu is one manifestation of a much older existence. Reincarnation does not make each body a disposable clone of a separate original; the narrative treats the memories, ambitions, and relationships as Erniu’s own continuous identity. His temporary impersonations and disguises likewise do not become separate people. (Chapters 438–451, 817–823, 1002–1004, 1293)

His cultivation advances by undoing seals within himself. Each release restores more of the power and grisly techniques associated with previous lives, but the process demands an increasingly severe price. By the Fourth Star Ring he can recover to mid Imperial Sovereign after rebuilding his body, with a blue ice-like structure visible under the flesh. The source compares aspects of his rebirth pattern to gods and his body to sourcefiends, but it does not definitively classify him as either; the final revelation instead connects him to the Living God Umbilical Cord. Blue worms and regeneration

Erniu can transform all or part of himself into blue worms, each carrying aspects of his face and will. The swarm allows him to survive bodily explosions, divide into smaller forms when attacked, infiltrate divine flesh, conceal himself in containers or another person’s hair, and reconstruct a human body afterward. This is not unlimited invulnerability. Powerful attacks can repeatedly destroy the worms, regeneration consumes strength, and after possessing the Brilliant Heaven god emperor he requires centuries of sleep before waking. (Chapters 879–880, 886–887, 897, 1294–1296, 1333–1336, 1354)

His organs and severed parts can also function as techniques. Erniu tolerates losing limbs because they can be regrown, and his heart contains blue worlds and world hearts that freeze divine power when torn out and thrown. These applications require extreme self-harm and often leave the current body collapsing, so they are emergency measures rather than cost-free attacks. Their effectiveness depends on Xu Qing’s cooperation in several decisive scenes, making bodily continuity both an individual power and a foundation for the brothers’ unusually ruthless teamwork. Devouring and internal possession

Devouring is Erniu’s signature path. He can consume godly flesh that ordinary cultivators cannot approach, turn enemies into fruit-like stores, spread worms through a corpse, and gradually replace divine tissue with his own blue flesh. He uses this capacity for cultivation, sealing, infiltration, and the acquisition of divine materials. Representative feats include stealing Joine’s flesh, consuming Firemoon opponents, eating within a god during the Fourth Star Ring war, occupying half of God Lord Death Departure’s corpse, and replacing the Brilliant Heaven god emperor’s body. The ability has clear limits. Flesh from Eminent Desolation can only be taken in tiny amounts without making Erniu explode, stronger divine bodies resist or destroy his worms, and digestion or fusion can require long periods of seclusion. Erniu therefore relies on preparation, weakening circumstances, and allies who can suppress the target. His grandly named Heaven-Devouring Earth-Consuming Reverse-Ancient Super-God Incantation is demonstrated as an internal devouring method, but its full operating principles are not explained beyond the effects he displays. Blue ice, sealing, and battlefield control

Erniu’s released power manifests as severe blue cold. He can freeze a wide area, form pillars and arms of ice, seal beings into fruit-like shapes, and use blue light to obstruct teleportation or divine force. In the Firemoon Great Hunt, his cold descends over hundreds of kilometers and works with Xu Qing’s attacks to contain stronger enemies. Within the god domain, blue arms prop up the sky while his worms consume the blood sea, showing that the ice and devouring aspects can operate together on a large scale. (Chapters 824, 831–840, 897)

These effects do not guarantee victory over every higher-level opponent. Sir Firedark can destroy his manifested body, the god-domain planet nearly tears both brothers apart, and God Lord power repeatedly breaks his worms and ice. Erniu compensates by treating destruction as a delay, using his cold to create openings rather than insisting on a direct contest, and coordinating with Xu Qing’s poison, soul threads, divine authority, or stronger suppression. Schemes, disguises, and ancient knowledge

Erniu’s longest plans combine reincarnational knowledge with disguise, social manipulation, and rare materials acquired across separate adventures. The Moonrite operation links the bronze coffin, Crimson Mother’s flesh, Moonrebel authority, and the Firemoon ceremony; the later theft from Eminent Desolation requires living hairs, Wordless concealment, an emperor’s corpse, god-domain destiny, and a heavenly dao. His strength lies not merely in predicting one fight but in preserving an objective while changing identities and tactics over years. (Chapters 559–717, 810–818, 893–907)

His knowledge is extensive but neither complete nor always current. The Firemoon Great Hunt’s rules have changed since the life he remembers, and he sometimes mistakes a dangerous reaction for a blessing. He survives these errors because he adapts quickly, admits danger when necessary, and trusts Xu Qing to supply current judgment and power. This limitation prevents his past-life memory from functioning as omniscience; it is a deep but fallible archive shaped by specific lives and experiences. (Chapters 817–823, 884–902, 1003–1004)
