Astolf

Astolf, better known by his title the Undead King, is an ancient skeletal monarch bound to Alex Rogue by a soul contract. He begins as an enemy awakened in an undead tomb, becomes an independent-minded companion and adviser, and ultimately reclaims his place as ruler of the restored Undead Land. Astolf is not the Nightmare Undead Lord, nor is he any duplicate produced by the nightmare trials. (Chapters 28–45, 435, 511)

Biography

Awakening and the soul contract

Astolf awakens from an altar as the Undead King and initially confronts Alex as the tomb's sovereign opponent. Alex defeats him and extracts a Soul Contract, but Astolf's death is temporary: he resurrects and, rather than resume a futile battle, bargains with the human carrying the Annihilation Crucifix. He accepts a contract that binds their survival and permits Alex to summon him while leaving his judgment and personality intact. (Chapters 34–45)

The contract gradually turns hostility into a working partnership. Astolf recognizes Alphox, explains that the separate Undead Lord had weakened him, and mediates Alex's dangerous encounter with that being. He later advises Alex on undead power, places the Undead King Curse on him, and repeatedly answers Death Call in battle. His aid against monsters, orcs, falls, and threats to Alphox establishes him as a sardonic but reliable protector rather than a mindless summon. (Chapters 53–66, 75–170)

The Abyss and Lorien

As Alex faces stronger chosen beings, Astolf remains etched to his soul and can intervene where ordinary allies cannot. He saves Alex from Kars, contests the demon directly, and later joins the descent through the Abyss, whose corruption does not affect him. When forced to destroy undead warriors he once commanded, his silence and increased regard for Alex reveal that his royal identity carries grief as well as pride. (Chapters 194, 218–245, 293–296)

In the Seventh Layer, Astolf finally gives Alex his personal name and discloses that much of his remembered strength has returned, placing him at level 1500. He holds back Lorien, the far stronger Chosen One of the Abyss, so Alex can continue, but Lorien overcomes and beheads him. The system later confirms that this death is not permanent and schedules his resurrection after one week, preserving the contract while temporarily removing Alex's most experienced defender. A stronger heart and a kingdom restored

After returning, Astolf fights beside Alex during the Hatred Demon crisis, helps confront the Hell Abomination, and continues offering practical counsel rather than empty loyalty. He recommends delaying review of Alex's undead upgrades until a Talent Upgrade Scroll can reveal the complete result, then studies the evolved Undead Lord talent with open admiration. Although one summon resembles portions of his power, Astolf remains a separate person, just as the nightmare trial's copied enemies are distinct from him. (Chapters 350, 373–424, 435)

Alex gives Astolf the extracted Heart of Endless Dread, which Astolf swallows and seats within his ribcage. Purple cracks, flame, and a vastly heavier aura mark the transformation, though the assimilation initially forces him to recover inside the Undead Space. Years later he completes that process, leaves Alex's side, gathers displaced undead, and rebuilds Undead Land. Alex eventually finds him ruling from a bone-and-black-steel throne, an autonomous monarch who remains connected to his former companions. (Chapters 436, 448, 499–511)

Appearance and personality

Astolf is a towering skeletal king whose hollow sockets hold small points of soul-fire. His imposing bones and ancient aura make him frightening even when still, while his later assimilation of the Heart of Endless Dread adds glowing purple cracks, a purple flame in one socket, and the heart itself pulsing within his exposed ribcage. In the restored Undead Land, his eyes glow blue as he sits on a throne of bone and black steel. (Chapters 28, 218, 418, 436, 511)

He is proud of undead power, terse, and frequently sardonic, but his dry manner conceals dependable loyalty. Astolf offers informed tactical advice, appreciates exceptional undead summons, and will risk death to protect Alex's path forward. He also retains a king's need for independence: once able, he chooses to rebuild a home for undead rather than remain permanently within Alex, while his shared confinement with Alphox matures into a lasting friendship. Skills and system abilities

Astolf possesses the strength and magic of the Undead King, including enormous skeletal hands, soul-fire attacks, and command over undead forces. He is resistant to the Abyss's corruption and can fight opponents far above Alex's contemporary level. Through the soul contract and Alex's Death Call, he can emerge from the Undead Space, while death normally sends him into a timed resurrection rather than erasing him permanently. The Heart of Endless Dread becomes a literal new core within Astolf and greatly amplifies his power after a long assimilation. His expertise is also systemic rather than merely martial: he understands undead curses, summoning, talent evolution, and the qualities of high-tier undead better than Alex does. The text does not identify the nightmare-created Undead Lord or Alex's summoned Undead Lord as alternate forms of Astolf. (Chapters 54–66, 417–420, 435–436, 499–511)

• Alex Rogue: Astolf begins as Alex's adversary, becomes bound to him by a survival-linked soul contract, and develops into his trusted fighter and adviser without losing his independent will. (Chapters 34–45, 61–66, 218–305, 391–511)
