Renna

Renna is an apprentice mage whose practical judgment and steady friendship help Eryk learn how magic works. Their bond persists across separation, while Renna’s own path takes her from Castile’s company to the front lines with Zyna. (Chapters 9–13, 68–73, 319)

Biography

Learning alongside Eryk

Renna joins Castile’s company as an apprentice sent to learn how to manage a detachment of soldiers. She is young and still developing her confidence, but she takes part in the company’s work rather than remaining a distant student. Eryk is assigned to protect her during travel, and their early conversations create a friendship grounded in mutual curiosity and the awkwardness of adapting to unfamiliar responsibilities. (Chapters 9–13)

Renna also helps Eryk understand that magic involves more than affinity scores. Their shared study and discussion give him a reason to keep learning even when his weak shaping makes conventional spellcasting difficult. Eryk becomes protective of her, and she in turn supports him as he experiments with abilities that no one in the company fully understands. (Chapters 11–13, 68–73)

Separate paths and renewed concern

Renna and Eryk are separated as military service and political upheaval redirect them. She later accompanies Zyna to the war front, where she witnesses how destructive powerful magic can be. The separation leaves both uncertain about the other: Renna believes Eryk is dead, while he remains concerned for her safety. (Chapters 113–118, 319, 323)

By Chapter 319, Duke Octavian’s troops have swept Renna up, and Legion guards hold her in the Chancellor’s suite. The state compels her to learn spells, including Immolate and Tornado, and keeps her alive because her magical potential is useful. This is forced instruction and political exploitation, not voluntary Mage College training or freely chosen service. (Chapter 319)

Appearance and personality

Renna is a young mage who is earnest, curious, and increasingly independent. She accepts practical responsibilities while continuing her magical study, and later trains with a short blade as well as magic. (Chapters 9–13, 319)

Magic and abilities

Renna is an apprentice mage whose later instruction is imposed while she is held under guard. At the latest appearance, she has been given Immolate and Tornado to learn as part of the state’s effort to exploit her ability. (Chapters 9–13, 98, 319)
