Old Fiend Black Wind
Old Fiend Black Wind is a hunchbacked outer-realm cultivator from Yufang River System whose Black Wind Body emphasizes dispersal, reach, and survival. A devastating loss during his Fourth Tribulation years changes him from an arrogant fighter into a cautious opportunist. He later survives the misleading insights of Fiend Mountain, comprehends a Sixth Tribulation law, and deliberately postpones the corresponding body advancement until he can reduce its risks.
This article covers the Fifth Tribulation Eminence introduced in Chapter 556. He is distinct from the much earlier Greater Demon Monarch Black Wind, a black-bear demon killed in the World Gap.
Biography
Cave-Abode Rivalry and the Cang Alliance
Old Fiend Black Wind enters a hidden cave abode with Palace Lord Snowjade, each holding part of the token needed to find it. Their agreement is practical rather than trusting: Snowjade supplies divination, Black Wind supplies the other token half, and both immediately suspect a leak when Ta Gu arrives. Black Wind responds with outward friendliness because none of them can safely eliminate the others, then brings subordinates through the trials in hopes that one of his faction will reach useful rewards. (Chapters 556–559)
At the cave's final contest, Black Wind fights Meng Chuan with his full Black Wind Body. He spreads through most of the restricted battlefield and attacks through many weapon-bearing arms, making Meng Chuan's speed-focused Bloodblades ineffective at first. Meng Chuan's destructive Nirvana attack then erases the dispersed wind and overwhelms Black Wind's condensed defense. Black Wind admits defeat before his body is destroyed, accepts the outcome without resentment, and joins the other finalists in becoming a Cang Alliance member. (Chapters 563–569)
The loss does not end his opportunism. Black Wind unsuccessfully tries to recruit Meng Chuan into Shadow Lands, where a successful referral would earn him contributions. After returning home, he sells current intelligence about Snowjade and Meng Chuan to the organization because no explicit Cang Alliance rule forbids it. The sequence shows the practical boundary of his friendliness: he avoids needless personal enmity, but still converts information and introductions into cultivation resources whenever the karmic terms allow it. (Chapters 569–570)
Fiend Mountain and a Delayed Breakthrough
Black Wind's next major opportunity begins with Fu Sui. Their first exploration of the ruin costs each an outer-realm true body and its carried treasures, yet Black Wind gains enough insight to grasp a second Fifth Tribulation law and chooses to return. He supports Fu Sui's plan to recruit Meng Chuan and a stronger physical combatant, judging that a four-person team can probe farther while Cang Alliance promises reduce the risk of betrayal. (Chapters 589–592)
On Fiend Mountain's possession path, Black Wind restricts himself to six Sixth Tribulation Eminences, believing caution will keep the borrowed experiences manageable. After thirty years, the six incompatible and distorted Daos increasingly blur his identity, and he realizes that completing the apparent Sixth Tribulation law could drive him insane. He abandons the outer-realm body, which turns to dust, while his surviving true body retains three Fifth Tribulation laws and the difficult task of discarding the borrowed paths before forging his own. (Chapters 599–600)
Black Wind eventually comprehends a Sixth Tribulation law through his accumulated insights, but he still senses that it may contain flaws inherited from the possession experience. Rather than immediately create a completed body and summon the tribulation, he decides to form a Sixth Tribulation body only to a stage short of perfection while continuing to evaluate the law. His latest state is therefore alive and stronger in comprehension, but not yet shown as a fully advanced Sixth Tribulation Eminence. (Chapter 687)
Appearance and personality
Old Fiend Black Wind appears as a grinning hunchbacked elder with gray eyes and a formless black fog surrounding him. His ordinary presentation is sociable: he calls peers “Brother,” offers introductions, and readily smooths over tense meetings. In combat, he can abandon that humanoid silhouette and disperse into the vast Black Wind Body before condensing again with eight arms. (Chapters 556 and 564)
His caution is learned rather than innate. As a Fourth Tribulation Eminence, he considers himself invincible among peers and behaves ferociously until a disastrous defeat costs him heavily. Thereafter he avoids casually offending cultivators at his level, studies opponents even when they appear weaker, admits defeat when continued resistance is pointless, and delays a dangerous breakthrough despite possessing the necessary law. His resourcefulness remains morally flexible, as shown by selling allies' basic intelligence when no promise explicitly prevents it. (Chapters 564, 570, and 687)
Abilities and cultivation
Old Fiend Black Wind is a Physical Body Tribulation cultivator whose defining system is the Black Wind Body. At his first confirmed appearance he is a Fifth Tribulation Eminence with one Fifth Tribulation law and several supporting Fourth Tribulation laws; successive ruin expeditions raise that total to three Fifth Tribulation laws and eventually one potentially flawed Sixth Tribulation law.
Black Wind Body
The Black Wind Body can scatter into chaotic wind or condense into a humanoid fighting form. In dispersed form, Black Wind expands across roughly fifteen hundred kilometers of the cave's array formation, surrounds an opponent, and creates many arms wielding spikes, sabers, swords, spears, whips, and other weapons. Speed-focused Bloodblades pass through and disperse portions of the wind without injuring his core, giving him strong survival and area control against ordinary peer attacks. (Chapter 564)
The body is difficult to damage but not absolute. Meng Chuan's Nirvana force erases the black wind wherever its beams pass, forcing Black Wind to condense and improve his defense. Even with eight arms and multiple weapons, he cannot block attacks amplified by a fiftyfold temporal advantage; several beams penetrate him, and he concedes before the remaining wind body is destroyed. His broad dispersed form is therefore effective against insufficient destructive power but vulnerable to attacks that erase it faster than it can evade or reform. (Chapter 564)
Combat judgment and domains
As a Physical Body Fifth Tribulation Eminence, Black Wind naturally projects a domain, seen as formless black fog around him. His combat judgment is at least as important as that pressure: he recognizes Meng Chuan's Essence Soul realm under suppression, changes from pursuit to battlefield-filling attacks when speed fails, and then condenses when dispersal becomes unsafe. The corpus shows flexible application of several laws but does not name the individual Fifth Tribulation law underlying the Black Wind Body. (Chapters 556 and 564)
Black Wind's experience does not let him overcome every specialization. A powerful time-flow advantage prevents him from closing distance even though speed is one of his strengths, and he cannot withstand a concentrated destructive law by relying on dispersal alone. The cave duel also confines both fighters to a fixed array, limiting the long-distance withdrawal that would normally be part of a Tribulation Eminence's survival strategy. (Chapters 563–564)
Possession insights and Sixth Tribulation limit
Fiend Mountain's second path lets Black Wind possess past Sixth Tribulation Eminences and experience their Daos. The method produces rapid insight—three Fifth Tribulation laws in thirty years—but the borrowed paths are distorted and mutually incompatible. Repeated possession makes him take longer to remember who he is, and he concludes that finishing their apparent route would cause madness. Leaving the ruin restores lucidity but does not automatically remove the six inherited conceptual paths. (Chapters 599–600)
Later accumulation allows him to comprehend a Sixth Tribulation law without deliberately forcing the final step. Because he still senses a possible flaw, he does not immediately perfect a matching physical body or trigger the tribulation. He plans to build the body only to the point before completion, preserving control over when advancement occurs. This caution leaves his latest confirmed cultivation as a Fifth Tribulation body paired with Sixth Tribulation-level comprehension, not a completed Sixth Tribulation breakthrough. (Chapter 687)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Body Fifth Tribulation | By 556 | Enters the ruin expedition with the dispersible Black Wind Body and one established Fifth Tribulation law. |
| Three Fifth Tribulation laws | 600 | Decades of possessing past Eminences supply rapid insight, but their distorted, incompatible paths also threaten his identity and sanity. |
| Sixth Tribulation law comprehension | 687 | Grasps a possibly flawed Sixth Tribulation law but deliberately delays perfecting the matching body, so his completed cultivation remains Fifth Tribulation. |
Relationships
- Fu Sui: Repeated ruin-exploration partner and the holder of Fiend Mountain's entry method. Black Wind loses a true body on their first attempt, returns because of the gains, and later credits Fu Sui for the opportunity that produces three Fifth Tribulation laws.
- Meng Chuan: Cave-abode opponent and later Fiend Mountain companion. Meng Chuan defeats his Black Wind Body, rejects his Shadow Lands invitation, and ultimately advances much faster from their shared expedition.
- Palace Lord Snowjade: Token-sharing partner and rival in the hidden cave abode. Black Wind values Snowjade's divination but learns during the final contest that his colder companion concealed a second Fifth Tribulation technique even from him.
- Ta Gu: Fellow cave explorer and Cang Alliance entrant. Black Wind treats him cautiously because of his Shura Realm background and later competes unsuccessfully with his Eternal Tower invitation for Meng Chuan's allegiance.
