Green Pulse String

The Green Pulse String is a hair-thin, self-growing treasure whose strongest affinity is with the Greenvine Tribe and its shen methodology. Zuo Mo first activates it under pressure in the Mist Hall, then gives it permanently to Qing Xiao, whose inherited power lets the string display a wider and more natural range of uses. History

An ancient strand awakened in the Mist Hall

The string first appears wrapped around Zuo Mo's wrist during his battle with the Ghost Mist Child. When Zuo Mo traces an unfamiliar shen glyph, the strand answers, destroys ghost-mist heads, stretches between sky and earth, and launches a green-light strike that burns the mist giant's manifested body. The attack empties Zuo Mo's shen power and leaves his fingertip painfully burned, showing that his access is powerful but costly and incomplete. (Chapter 793)

The defeated Ghost Mist Child identifies the strand as a naturally formed object of unknown origin. It grows only half a li in a millennium; at seven li long, this example has accumulated at least fourteen millennia of growth. Zuo Mo keeps it after the Mist Hall encounter and later learns from Qing Lin's scroll that it is a treasure especially desired by the Greenvine Tribe. (Chapters 794–795 and 808)

Transfer to its compatible inheritor

Zuo Mo can use the Green Pulse shen glyph through the string, but cannot bring out its full potential. After finding Qing Xiao, the last survivor of a Greenvine Tribe branch, he transfers both Greenvine Mystical Water and the Green Pulse String to him. The string becomes responsive almost immediately, completing Qing Lin's wish that the tribe's inheritance reach its descendants. (Chapter 808)

Qing Xiao retains the string through the journey out of the Totem Coliseum and the decade in the endless void. Zuo Mo borrows it once to retrieve an object from a dangerous pillar of starlight, but this is temporary use rather than a reversal of custody. By the return to civilization, it is again worn on Qing Xiao's wrist and remains his at the last documented battle. (Chapters 809, 812, and 852–858)

Abilities and properties

• Natural growth: No maker or material is known. The string grows by half a li every thousand years and measures seven li when identified, giving it exceptional reach without implying that all of that length must be deployed at once. (Chapter 794)
• Green Pulse shen glyph: In Zuo Mo's hands, its principal value is the glyph it enables. The resulting taut string and gathered green light destroy mist constructs and burn the Ghost Mist Child's giant form, but the demonstrated use drains all of Zuo Mo's shen power and hurts his drawing finger. (Chapters 793 and 808)
• Greenvine affinity: A sufficiently advanced Greenvine Shen Methodology practitioner can use the string without first refining it. Qing Xiao handles it instinctively, and it behaves as though alive and obedient in his hands. (Chapters 808–809)
• Binding and ranged force: Qing Xiao sends the hair-thin strand into hiding places, wraps targets, lifts them, and releases them at command. He can also tension it like a bowstring to gather a dangerous mass of light. (Chapters 852 and 854)
• Regenerative vine defense: With the Greenvine Clan's song and Qing Xiao's shen power, the string weaves into a vast wall of living vines. New growth replaces cut sections, allowing it to absorb Tuoba Yu's combined sword strike and then press down on his mounted force. This large-scale defense depends on Qing Xiao supplying power.
