Yan Ming Zi

Yan Ming Zi is one of three wealthy Ling Ying Sect disciples who provoke Wu Kong Sword Sect while seeking Wei Sheng. He loses his Water Drop sword to Zuo Mo, then becomes an unusually accurate interpreter of the “Scalping Zombie” because firsthand defeat teaches him to respect Zuo Mo's tactics and appetite for valuable talismans.

Biography

Documented arc

Yan Ming Zi arrives with Hu Shan and Tao Zhu Er, wounds Old Black during a disturbance, and dismisses Zuo Mo as a dan-maker. His black-water armor blocks Zuo Mo's low-grade sword, but he mistakes intact armor for complete safety. Tidal sword essence passes through it and freezes his body, allowing Zuo Mo to erase the Water Drop sword's imprint and seize it as compensation. The humiliation is compounded when his companions spread the story, but it also corrects his estimate of Zuo Mo's ability. (Chapters 81–88)

Yan Ming Zi later watches Zuo Mo defeat stronger Ling Ying challengers and becomes convinced that the first loss was not trickery. His detailed account of the loot-taking helps create the “Scalping Zombie” reputation among wealthy disciples. During the Sword Test Conference he serves as commentator, talisman judge, and small-scale bettor; he buys a replacement Deep Ocean sword and uses knowledge of competitors and equipment to search for favorable odds. He remains with Hu Shan and Tao Zhu Er through the conference and is alive when last shown. (Chapters 86–138)

Appearance and personality

Yan Ming Zi wears blue ling armor, later identified as black-water armor despite the color description. The source gives no stable account of his face, hair, age, or build. His expressions are more distinctive: smug laughter, pale fury, fear, excitement, and professional admiration for valuable equipment. (Chapters 81–101)

He is boastful, experienced at causing trouble, materialistic, socially resilient, and genuinely skilled at judging talismans. He can resent Hu Shan while laughing at his loss, yet adapts quickly when evidence proves Zuo Mo stronger. Business and wagers excite him more reliably than cultivation prestige. (Chapters 81–138)

Abilities and cultivation

Yan Ming Zi uses an entangling water-style sword path and has more fight experience than Zuo Mo at their first meeting. His cultivation is roughly comparable, but he lacks sword essence and relies too heavily on superior equipment. The encounter shows the limit of his armor: it stops the blade without stopping cold sword essence transmitted through the strike. (Chapters 81–83)

His strongest noncombat skill is talisman appraisal. He recognizes changes in Water Drop's quality, evaluates conference equipment, and helps predict betting outcomes. He calls his own fighting average and does not demonstrate a later breakthrough. (Chapters 86–138)

Relationships

Hu Shan and Tao Zhu Er

Hu Shan and Tao Zhu Er are Yan Ming Zi's regular companions. The trio causes trouble, spectates, wagers, and teases one another; their friendship includes rivalry and willingness to publicize each other's embarrassment. (Chapters 81–138)

Zuo Mo

Zuo Mo defeats Yan Ming Zi and takes his sword after Yan wounds Old Black. Fear gradually becomes informed respect, though not friendship. Yan's retelling becomes part of Zuo Mo's intimidating reputation. (Chapters 81–101)

Chang Heng

Chang Heng is Yan Ming Zi's powerful shixiong and the standard he uses to judge other contestants. Yan is excited by Chang Heng's violence but frightened enough to seek distance and a Spirit Travelling seal before the attack. (Chapters 96–122)
