Matthew
Matthew is the elder son of Marcus and the de facto leader of the seed group investigated after Letitia's apparent murder. His protective instincts and belief in Angarian solidarity are tested by successive betrayals inside that group.
Biography
Leadership during the seed investigation
Matthew is a large, heavily trained Fortress seed whose lucky breakthrough recently gives him enough authority to coordinate five strong-willed companions. He treats Jessica as a younger sister, opposes casually torturing suspects, and tries to stop the others from turning their anger against Daneel, yet the group's earlier hatred of the Central Continent still draws him into their hostile plan. During the staged murder he attempts to protect Jessica and keep the investigation controlled, only to learn that Letitia designed the group as material for consciousness theft and Jessica secretly manipulated that design. The revelation breaks his naïve conviction that Angarians will naturally refuse to fight each other, and he remains alive when the case ends. A newly advanced Order member also named Matthew appears in Chapter 791, but the corpus does not establish that he is Marcus's son, so the two are not merged here. (Chapters 733–743, 791)
Appearance and personality
Matthew is twenty-two during the investigation and has a massive, bear-like build accompanied by a similarly booming laugh. He is generally neutral and controlled, especially compared with the shorter-tempered seeds, and assumes responsibility for decisions as the group's eldest and strongest coordinator. Beneath that restraint he is protective, family-minded, and capable of intense anger when trust is abused. (Chapters 733–743)
Abilities and power
Matthew trains primarily as a Fighter but has learned enough magic to use elemental vision during the murder investigation. The Big Four's seed program gives him childhood training, special materials, and Hero oversight, while a recent breakthrough improves his ability to lead the group. The supplied case does not state his formal realm, Fighter sublevel, or a named technique. The newly advanced Champion called Matthew in Chapter 791 belongs to the Spikeking's Order group and cannot be identified as this seed from name alone. (Chapters 736–743, 791)
Relationships
- Marcus: Matthew is Marcus's eldest son. Family loyalty and the injury of his younger brother intensify his desire to confront the Church, while Marcus's standing connects him to the Fortress and its leadership culture. (Chapters 733–743)
- Jessica: Matthew treats Jessica as a little sister and repeatedly shields or consoles her. Discovering her role in manipulating Letitia forces him to confront betrayal by the person he considered the group's weakest and most innocent member. (Chapters 735–743)
- Letitia: Matthew initially tries to judge Letitia's apparent death fairly, then reacts with controlled fury when her original consciousness-theft plan is exposed. (Chapters 734–743)
- Dave, Memphis, and Scarlett: Matthew's breakthrough makes him the group's working leader, but the case demonstrates the limits of a command based on friendship when several members are emotionally compromised. (Chapters 736–743)
Items
No individually named item is firmly assigned to Matthew. He benefits from the Big Four's training materials and uses magic during the investigation, but the supplied scenes do not identify a personal named weapon, trinket, or artefact. (Chapters 736–743)
