Yellow Paper Umbrella

The Yellow Paper Umbrella is a famed defensive relic that also serves as a sword vessel, a source of sword intent, and a concealment tool. Its custody connects Su Li, the Tang clan, Chen Changsheng, and Xu Yourong without making every temporary bearer its owner. (Chapters 243–244, 325–370, 458, and 839–840)

History

From a Wenshui pledge to the Garden of Zhou

Su Li leaves the umbrella in Wenshui when he lacks money, placing it in the Tang clan's keeping and tying its presentation to a promise from Tang Old Master. The Old Master later gives it to Chen Changsheng before the Garden of Zhou as a calculated bond with the Orthodoxy. There it does more than defend Chen: its sword intent lets him guide the Sword Pool's weapons, and carrying it onto the plains awakens the buried swords that ultimately leave the Garden with him. Return, concealment, and renewed battle

Inside the Garden, Su Li reveals that the umbrella can function as a sword vessel and later draws the Heaven Shrouding Sword from it during their journey south. He entrusts the umbrella to Xu Yourong for return; she uses its concealment before restoring it to Chen. Chen thereafter employs it for defense and covert movement, briefly allows it to serve as leverage in Wenshui, and at the battle against the Demon Commander sends it back into Su Li's hands for immediate use. Abilities and properties

• Its canopy withstands direct weapon strikes, fists, flying debris, and other powerful attacks, though an impact's raw might can still pass through even when the umbrella blocks its Qi. (Chapters 263, 342, 572, and 709–715)
• When true essence activates its mechanism, it forms an almost invisible surrounding barrier that can obstruct wind and snow and hide those beneath it from ordinary notice. (Chapters 361, 505–507, 544, and 1073)
• It carries sword intent, houses or reveals the Heaven Shrouding Sword, and acts as a medium through which Chen can contact and direct many swords. That large-scale control remains limited by his spiritual sense. (Chapters 325–334, 370, and 620)
• Its connection to the Garden of Zhou helps Chen reach the mausoleum and later awakens the Sword Pool, but the corpus does not describe it as unrestricted transport between arbitrary places. (Chapters 306 and 620)
