Biography

Pursuit of the pill maker

Under the Tang Second Master's uncompromising order to find and control the unknown pill maker, Tang Seventeenth Master examines a recovered Cinnabar Pill and coordinates physicians, merchants, and a local bishop. Although disgusted by the corpse from which the medicine is recovered, he does not look away; he instead uses the clan's knowledge that the pill dissolves in water and is difficult to preserve to protect the evidence. He eventually recognizes that the maker may be Chen Changsheng, but the investigation draws him into the snowy-mountain scheme, where he dies before the later Mount Song inquiry.
