Nanke

Nanke is the thirty-seventh daughter of the Demon Lord, the sole disciple of Black Robe, and the young demon prodigy whose Peacock bloodline makes her the ordained rival of Xu Yourong. Her pride first turns that rivalry into a campaign of assassination, but her need for paternal recognition, a destructive second awakening, and Chen Changsheng's promise to cure her repeatedly force her to choose between blood, loyalty, and the people who once treated her as an enemy. Biography

The Garden of Zhou

Nanke's operation begins before she personally appears: Hua Cui and Ning Qiu impersonate her while helping to trap human cultivators, but Zhexiu correctly concludes that the true princess would attack directly rather than depend on their elaborate deception. When Nanke confronts Xu Yourong, she is revealed as the Demon Lord's Peacock-blooded daughter and Black Robe's only female disciple. Her bloodline has made Xu's Heavenly Phoenix blood a measure of her own worth, while later testimony reveals that entering the Garden and defeating Xu were also attempts to prove to her father that she possessed the strength and loyalty to lead the demons. Nanke refuses assistance in her duel because she wants an uncontested answer to which sacred bloodline stands higher. Already at Ethereal Opening despite being younger than Xu, she uses the complete Yeshi Step and the paired Southern Cross Swords, then burns her blue true blood when ordinary cultivation cannot settle the contest. Her poisonous Peacock Plume and Xu's Phoenix blood leave both girls gravely wounded, yet Nanke continues the pursuit by calling her two maids back into wing form. The result exposes both her exceptional resolve and the self-destructive pride that makes victory more important than survival. (Chapters 272–280)

That pursuit brings Nanke to Chen, who recognizes that her apparent dullness is the symptom of an awakened divine soul growing faster than her body can support. A second awakening before physical maturity could destroy her mind or kill her, and his offer of treatment briefly creates a possible bargain between enemies. Nanke nevertheless uses the Peacock Plume to cast him away and follows him into the Plains of the Unsetting Sun. She fears that Chen and Xu together might produce an unforeseen miracle, and her trust in Black Robe's design persuades her to eliminate that possibility rather than accept an uncertain cure. At Zhou Dufu's mausoleum, Nanke uses the Soul Wood to direct the monster tide while seeking the Soul Pivot, whose absence prevents complete control. Believing herself the Garden's successor, she sends her soul out of her body rather than let Chen remove its ten thousand swords. She links her spiritual sense to the actual Golden-winged Great Peng and becomes the divine soul guiding its near-Saint power, but Chen's sword formation defeats the union and leaves her near death. Black Robe extracts his unconscious disciple from a glacier, preserving her life after the strategy meant to secure the Garden instead costs her another severe bloodline injury. Captivity and Altered Memory

Nanke remains loyal to her father when Black Robe and the Demon Commander overthrow him, even though the conspiracy is led by her teacher and elevates her older brother. She explodes her blood, assumes her true peacock body, breaks the Demon Palace barrier, and escapes into a snowstorm; the new government answers by ordering her execution. She subsequently stays with her deposed father during his flight, and their reappearance in human territory places her between the parent she has chosen and a regime that regards both of them as enemies. When the Young Demon Lord kills their father, Nanke attacks him despite their shared blood and Black Robe's support for his rule. She explains that her trials, discipleship, Garden mission, and rescue of her father from the abyss were all meant to win recognition as a possible ruler; learning that he never intended her to inherit converts devotion into bitter disappointment. Faced with her brother's superior power, she accepts Chen's proposed alliance because his old promise of a cure offers the one future her family has denied her. She completes her divine soul's second awakening to break Black Robe's Essence Qi Locks and carry Chen southeast, but the attempt fails at its final bottleneck and they fall from the sky. The failed awakening severely damages Nanke's sea of consciousness. She remembers neither her identity nor her enmity with Chen, retaining only the conviction that he promised to cure her. While he recovers, she feeds, washes, and guards him with an instinctive protectiveness that reverses their former relationship; Chen, in turn, conceals her identity as his younger sister and refuses to abandon her. His treatments cannot safely reach the light-fog structure of a demon mind, but his decision to honor the promise turns a tactical bargain from the Garden into a sustained responsibility for her life. Nanke follows Chen as a dependent protector, obeying his instructions and using her speed and senses even without conscious knowledge of her former loyalties. Her wings eventually manifest again, and she later instructs Chen in the Yeshi Step well enough to improve his use of the imperial technique. Because keeping a Demon Princess openly beside the Pope is dangerous, Chen shelters her inside the Garden of Zhou and ultimately leaves her at Mount Li, where the Sect Master's Just Sword's Clear Music can calm her mind. The treatment improves her condition, but no one can predict when her original awareness will return. (Chapters 823–868, 931, 984, and 1104)

Return to the Demon Lands

The sword music eventually restores enough of Nanke's mind for her to recognize herself, and the renewed human campaign forces a choice that peaceful convalescence cannot postpone. Although she still hates the reigning Demon Lord, she insists that Xuelao City is the place where she was born and that she must defend it from destruction. Zhexiu threatens to kill her rather than let her become an enemy again, prompting Nanke to spring an ambush refined through twenty-nine plans. Their poisoned battle ends only when Qiushan Jun intervenes; Chen's prior instructions allow her to leave Mount Li, sacrificing the refuge and friendships formed during her illness for her loyalty to her homeland. By the time the victorious human party reaches the Demon Hall, Nanke has become markedly weaker, though the corpus does not explain every hardship she endured after returning north. She still attacks Chen with the Peacock Plume and condemns him for pursuing victory until the demons are dead, making clear that restored memory has not erased either their complicated personal history or her opposition to his army. After Zhizhi restrains her, Nanke follows the group deeper into the hall, where the confrontation with her teacher and brother exposes how thoroughly the imperial family has been divided by Black Robe's plans. Years after the fall of Xuelao City, Nanke is alive near the Northern Sea, in the same remote region where Qiushan Jun studies the demons' declining fertility. Her presence there is revealed only when he discovers that she has already lived in the area for years. Her illness has worsened rather than healed, leaving the promise that shaped her alliance with Chen unresolved; Qiushan's offer to play a newly learned sword song gives her final appearance a modest continuation of the Mount Li treatment instead of a political or martial resolution. Appearance and personality

Nanke first appears in person as a delicate, pretty girl of about ten, with a childish air, black hair, and eyes set unusually far apart and angled slightly inward. The pressure of her growing divine soul makes her gaze wooden and her reactions seem slow, an appearance repeatedly compared to a village girl gathering grass. In battle, green light, blue or dark blood, feathered wings, and the cold radiance of the Peacock replace that apparent frailty with an unmistakably sacred and dangerous presence. Later years change her apparent age only slightly, and severe bloodline injuries repeatedly leave her pale or physically diminished. (Chapters 272, 274–276, 335, 354, 765, 790, and 1166)

Her natural manner is flat, direct, and nearly devoid of vocal intonation, but not devoid of emotion or intelligence. Nanke is proud enough to demand a fair duel, patient enough to devise twenty-nine contingencies against Zhexiu, and loyal enough to oppose both teacher and brother for her father and homeland. She is also acutely sensitive to humiliation, particularly suggestions that her appearance or illness makes her inferior. Damage to her mind strips away much of that reserve and reveals a cheerful, trusting, meat-loving girl who clings to Chen's sleeve; recovery restores her severity without entirely erasing the bonds formed while she was ill. Abilities and cultivation

Nanke reaches Ethereal Opening before Xu Yourong despite being younger, and her abundant true essence, bloodline gifts, and combat training let her threaten opponents whose nominal cultivation is higher. The corpus does not assign her a later conventional realm, while several of her greatest feats come from inherited power, artifacts, or self-destructive awakenings rather than an ordinary cultivation breakthrough. Peacock bloodline and divine soul

Nanke was born with the bloodline and divine soul of the Peacock, also called the Surpassing Bird, one of the noblest bird inheritances and extremely close to the Heavenly Phoenix in strength. It grants enormous true essence, exceptionally cold and poisonous blue blood, high speed, and the potential for a true peacock body. Her transformation is Nanke herself assuming her bloodline form, not a separate character or personality; she uses it to escape Xuelao City and again manifests the Peacock while breaking the Essence Qi Locks. The same inheritance is also the source of her congenital illness. Her comprehension awakened the Peacock soul while her body was still immature, so the soul continued to expand between her eyes faster than its vessel could grow. Nanke knowingly accepts that danger to escape with Chen; although the completed manifestation scatters the locks and carries them to human territory, it collapses and severely injures her sea of consciousness. Peacock Plume and poison

The Peacock Plume is Nanke's most dangerous personal attack, a projection of the Peacock's source power through her fingers or tail feathers. It appears as one or more dark-green rays combining extraordinary speed, sharpness, and venom; it can pierce bodies strengthened by purification and dragon blood, poison Zhexiu for an extended period, and injure the Young Demon Lord even when Nanke cannot defeat him directly. Its toxin is part of Nanke's own bloodline, which also makes her highly resistant to poison. Durable targets can survive the wound, and Zhexiu's prolonged earlier exposure eventually gives him enough resistance to contest it during their Mount Li battle. Yeshi Step and the Southern Cross Swords

Nanke has the only complete command of the Yeshi Step attributed to a member of the Demon Imperial clan in her generation. The movement art follows stellar positions, producing changes of direction and bursts so quick that even many Star Condensation cultivators cannot match her at short range. It remains available after her memory injury, and she later instructs Chen in details that let him contend more effectively with her brother. Its principal limit is environmental or strategic containment: speed alone cannot cross Black Robe's network of Essence Qi Locks, and without functioning wings she can maneuver in the air but not indefinitely arrest a fall. Her Southern Cross weapon is a matched pair disguised as one unusually long sword, with a rear blade or “tail” complementing the forward edge. Nanke's sword style is direct and overbearing, and the combination of paired blades, Yeshi Step, and Peacock poison lets her strike from rapidly changing angles. She wounds the Young Demon Lord with the swords during their confrontation and continues to carry them after her exile. Hua Cui and Ning Qiu

Hua Cui and Ning Qiu are Nanke's maids and two wings, but they are separately embodied spiritual beings rather than alternate identities of Nanke. Each can assume a woman's form, reason independently, and fight at roughly upper Ethereal Opening when separated. Together they can fly, multiply their combat effectiveness, and merge behind Nanke as green wings of light, greatly extending her speed and aerial control. Their embodiment is vulnerable to Nanke's condition: after her failed awakening they disappear, later return first as wings that cannot take human form, and recover their separate forms when Nanke's awareness improves. Monster command and the Golden-winged Great Peng

The Soul Wood lets Nanke deter, summon, and direct monsters in the Garden of Zhou, while the Soul Pivot is necessary for complete communication and control. At the mausoleum she combines these tools with restrictions left by Zhou Dufu, bringing the monster tide against Chen and Xu. The method is not absolute: without the Pivot, command remains incomplete, and the monsters' response can be disturbed by competing blood, sword, and divine-beast pressures. The destruction of the Soul Pivot ends this particular system of control. (Chapters 305–310, 325–336, and 782)

To command the Golden-winged Great Peng, Nanke must go further and send her spiritual sense into the divine beast's shadow. The Great Peng is an actual external being, not another Nanke identity; her soul temporarily becomes its guiding divine soul, making them almost inseparable and giving her access to strength and spirit at the cusp of the Saint realm. The union can burn and buffet the plain across immense distances, but it requires preparation, the Soul Wood, and dangerous separation of soul from body. Chen's ten-thousand-sword formation breaks the manifestation and leaves Nanke on her last breath, demonstrating that the borrowed power does not protect her from the union's defeat.
