Daoist Baishi
Daoist Baishi is the Archbishop of the Hall of Literary Glory and a senior conservative figure within the Orthodoxy. His death in Wenshui demonstrates that the exiled Pope will enforce authority even against a Prefect protected by church procedure and capital politics. (Chapters 656–703 and 802–1066)
Biography
Judgment in Wenshui
Daoist Baishi assists the previous Pope after the Divine Empress's fall and later travels with the other Prefects, guarding one of the Orthodoxy's treasures. In Wenshui he is caught in Chen Changsheng's confrontation with the conservative faction: Linghai Zhiwang launches a full-force surprise attack, but the Falling Star Stone preserves most of Baishi's strength and attempts to carry him through space. Chen's preparations prevent escape. Although church rules would normally require a Great Hall of Light hearing and offer powerful allies chances to save him, Chen orders the Wenshui archbishop to execute him. The death makes the Orthodoxy's stance unmistakable and leaves Baishi's prefecture open to a replacement from the new faction. (Chapters 673–703, 802–832, and 859–1066)
Appearance and personality
Daoist Baishi is tall and thin. He usually maintains a controlled expression and represents the institutional confidence of a high archbishop, but shock and pallor emerge once he realizes that the Falling Star Stone has not carried him to safety. (Chapters 656, 673, 805–824)
Abilities and cultivation
As a Prefect, Baishi is a high-level cultivator trusted with a major Orthodox treasure. He survives most of Linghai Zhiwang's surprise force because he already holds the Falling Star Stone, so that defense is item-derived rather than proof of equal bodily resilience. The corpus does not establish his precise realm or a separate signature technique. (Chapters 803 and 821–823)
Relationships
- Chen Changsheng: Chen orders Baishi's death to establish the Pope's authority over the conservative Orthodoxy. (Chapters 822–832 and 859)
- Linghai Zhiwang: Linghai opens the Wenshui action with a full-force surprise attack that Baishi partly survives through his treasure. (Chapters 805 and 821–822)
Items
- Falling Star Stone: Baishi guards this Orthodox treasure and uses its defensive and spatial power during the Wenshui ambush. It preserves most of his strength but cannot escape Chen's prepared confinement; after his death it passes into Chen's custody. (Chapters 821–822, 998, and 1020)
