Cross Blade

The Cross Blade is the sword associated with the Farlier family’s hereditary Cross Blade Technique. It is Leylin’s principal mundane weapon while travelling to Abyssal Bone Forest Academy and during his earliest field missions.

History

The Farlier family discipline

Leylin inherits memories of the family’s sword style and accompanying breathing technique from his father’s instruction. Lacking his own weapon on the westward journey, he borrows George’s cross blade for practice and uses the A.I. Chip to perfect the technique. He later takes another blade from a noble youth and carries it as his regular weapon. (Chapters 3–10)

Combat and replacement

Leylin uses the blade against direwolves and executes the Cross Slash, the technique’s secret killing move. At the academy he continues to carry the weapon alongside a crossbow, but loses one blade during a bear attack. A replacement is later ruined by the corrosive fluids of a mutated Green Tree Sprite, prompting him to seek a better-quality sword from Black Hammer. (Chapters 11–18, 30–34, and 43–49)

Abilities and properties

• A conventional sword whose effectiveness depends on the Farlier family’s Cross Blade Technique rather than enchantment. (Chapters 3–5)
• Supports horizontal, vertical, piercing, and slanted attacks, culminating in the centrifugal-force Cross Slash. (Chapters 3 and 11)
• Ordinary examples can be lost, corroded, or otherwise destroyed and are replaceable rather than unique artifacts. (Chapters 34, 46, and 49)

Ownership and custody
