Samuel

Samuel is the wrathful Archdevil who rules Phlegethos, the Fourth Hell. He joins the infernal coalition against Leylin Farlier but becomes the first of its assembled Lords to fall to Seven Sins.

Biography

Lord of the Fourth Hell

Samuel rules Phlegethos as the Lord of Wrath and joins Mammon and Levistus in confronting Asmodeus over the instability in Dis. He wants to prevent the nominal supreme ruler from installing another dependent lord, but agrees to a Styx-witnessed contract that keeps the Archdevils from intervening. When Leylin Farlier takes Dis, Samuel's instinct is to attack immediately; Asmodeus invokes the contract to stop him, revealing that Samuel's anger has again made him easier to bind and manipulate. (Chapters 1032–1041)

Leylin's later control of the first three Hells shifts the flow of damned souls to Samuel's layer and places Phlegethos directly beneath a hostile divine kingdom. Samuel fortifies himself with curses and traps while his armies help contain Leylin's border. Pressure eventually drives him into Asmodeus's coalition with the remaining Lords, despite their mutual distrust: preserving his territory matters more than the rivalries that normally keep Baator divided. (Chapters 1131 and 1159)

Death to Seven Sins

Leylin takes the offensive before the coalition can hold together and confronts Samuel in Phlegethos. Samuel's fury increases his strength and summons both hellfire and a wave of the layer's origin force, but the backing of one Hell cannot withstand Seven Sins, an origin-force weapon baptized by two large worlds. Leylin breaks the phantom of Phlegethos, severs Samuel's right hand, and wounds his chest in the opening exchange. (Chapter 1165)

Samuel abandons direct resistance and attempts to retreat, but Seven Sins changes into a hooked chain and drags him back before the other Lords can intervene. Its hammer form then crushes his head. The weapon devours Samuel's law, completing Leylin's comprehension of wrath and adding Fury Amplification to Seven Sins; Samuel's death also gives Leylin the Fourth Hell and breaks the coalition's willingness to continue fighting. Appearance and personality

Samuel is surrounded by flames that leap higher with his anger. He is confrontational, impatient, and defined by wrath, yet his confidence collapses into desperation once Leylin's weapon proves capable of destroying him. (Chapters 1032–1041 and 1165)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Samuel is a rank 7 Archdevil whose personal law of wrath is reinforced by his territorial authority over Phlegethos. His power peaks inside the Fourth Hell, but the corpus also demonstrates that territorial origin force is finite and can be overwhelmed by a weapon backed by greater reserves.

Law of wrath and infernal flame

Samuel appears as fury incarnate, with flames circling his body and leaping higher as his anger rises. In battle his strength demonstrably increases with that fury, and he calls hellfire from Phlegethos as an offensive surge. The same emotional law shapes his behavior: provocation drives him toward immediate confrontation, while infernal contracts can restrain that impulse regardless of his raw power. (Chapters 1032, 1041, and 1165)

Samuel's death proves that wrath is a complete law rather than merely a fire affinity. Seven Sins absorbs it to bring Leylin's law of wrath to full comprehension and derives an ability that doubles its user's attributes by consuming wrath. That later weapon effect explains the nature and value of Samuel's authority, but it is not an ability Samuel himself is shown activating. (Chapter 1165)

Lordship of Phlegethos

As the Fourth Hell's ruler, Samuel governs the layer, receives the souls that continue down the Styx after Leylin closes the first three Hells, and draws on one ninth of Baator's origin force within his territory. In the final battle, that connection manifests as a phantom of Phlegethos and a massive reinforcement of flame and power. It makes Samuel difficult enough that Leylin earlier expects him to escape an assault by the flying city, but it does not make him invulnerable or equally strong outside his layer. (Chapters 1131, 1159, and 1165)

His fortified castle's curses and traps are prepared defenses created while he hides from Leylin, not innate expressions of wrath described in detail. The corpus does not name their mechanics, and Samuel never gets the opportunity to use them in his last confrontation. (Chapter 1159)
