Roman
Biography
Spirit in the laboratory
Roman dies to the Gnawing Slate while exploring a laboratory connected to the Great Magus Serholm. Its formations trap his soul until it degrades into a vengeful spirit. When Leylin Farlier enters, Roman pretends to own the laboratory and offers a false inheritance, concealing an invasive spirit meant to take the acolyte's body. Leylin identifies both the corpse and deception, then uses a spirit-suppressing potion and a Confining Spirit Sphere to capture him. (Chapter 75)
Interrogation and bargain
Leylin keeps Roman in the sphere for more than a year and repeatedly weakens his life force and intelligence while extracting common Magus and alchemical knowledge. Roman tries to preserve leverage by mixing useful information with omissions and falsehoods, but Leylin's records let him compare the answers over time. The contest ends when Leylin prepares to use the spirit as the final catalyst for the Fallen Star Pendant. (Chapters 75 and 79–84)
Facing permanent imprisonment in the artifact, Roman offers his alchemical skill, then the secret of advanced meditation techniques and the location of Serholm's inheritance. He secures a Trial's Eye agreement that Leylin will release him from the Confining Spirit Sphere. Leylin obeys the exact wording but immediately catches Roman in the surrounding Spirit Awakening formation; torture and undeath have reduced Roman's judgment enough that he fails to guard against that distinction. (Chapters 84–86)
Spirit awakening
Roman becomes the catalyst for the Fallen Star Pendant's final Spirit Awakening. The ritual draws the Level 3 acolyte spirit toward the silver cross, whose manifested mouth bites down and devours him despite his resistance. His remaining soul force activates the artifact rather than granting him a continuing consciousness within it. (Chapter 86)
Appearance and personality
Roman appears as the translucent spirit of an old man, alternating between frenzy, fear, and recovered cunning. Prolonged torture and undeath degrade his judgment enough for Leylin's wordplay to deceive him.
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Roman's living expertise and undead traits are distinct. His alchemy and institutional knowledge survive as memory, while his demonstrated combat power after death comes from being a Level 3 acolyte's vengeful spirit.
Vengeful spirit body
Roman's spirit is translucent, extremely fast, and unaffected by ordinary physical or corrosive attacks. He extends his fingernails into razor-like claws and crosses distance faster than Leylin's naked eye or body can follow, drawing blood even through attempted evasion. He also prepares a hostile spirit manifestation intended to invade a living body. (Chapter 75)
These advantages depend on a finite spiritual life force and are countered by purpose-built spirit measures. Trevor's Revolving Shield both blocks and suppresses him enough for physical contact, while the Confining Spirit Sphere freezes his thoughts and prevents escape or suicide. Repeated weakening reduces his intelligence, and as a former Level 3 acolyte rather than an official Magus he retains no demonstrated spellcasting after death. (Chapters 75, 79, and 86)
Alchemy and Magus knowledge
In life Roman was a Level 3 acolyte and an alchemist whose diary contributes to the reconstruction of the Fallen Star Pendant. He knows special alchemical methods, the distinction between ordinary advancement and advanced meditation techniques, and the location of Serholm's inheritance. These are professional competencies and bargaining information, not powers of his spirit body. (Chapters 75 and 84–86)
Roman's mental persistence lets him conceal crucial facts through prolonged interrogation, but it deteriorates as Leylin damages his life force. He can recover flashes of clarity when threatened with destruction, yet that recovery is temporary and does not restore the judgment needed to escape Leylin's precisely worded bargain. (Chapters 79 and 84–86)
