Paul

Paul is an octopus-headed Morning Star Warlock of Spirit Circle whose inherited techniques attack minds and spirits. He introduces Leylin Farlier to the Central Continent's high-level Warlock alliance, guides him through its private political and trading systems, and later becomes a contracted protector of the Ouroboros Clan.

Biography

Warning and recruitment

Paul and Philip attend Leylin's Morning Star ceremony as representatives of Spirit Circle and Wind Wolf Lair. Their congratulations also carry a warning: Jupiter's Lightning and its Radiant Moon leader threaten the Ouroboros Clan, and a newly advanced Morning Star cannot treat that conflict as a local dispute. Paul studies Leylin while delivering the news, including making unsettling eye contact that allows the Spirit Warlock's inherited perception to press against Leylin's mind. Leylin's soul force resists the scrutiny, establishing that the newcomer is not easy to probe or intimidate. (Chapters 509–512)

The pair invite Leylin into the network of high-ranking bloodline organisations opposing Jupiter's Lightning. Paul later serves as his guide through Creevey City and Blood Stronghold, explains the competing circles within the Warlock Union, and helps renegotiate the alliance contract so that obligations and benefits are acceptable to the Ouroboros Clan. He is not merely a host: his explanations give Leylin access to political relationships that an isolated clan cannot create by force alone. (Chapters 519–522)

Scarlet Crescent losses

Paul joins Cybel's force inside the newly opened Scarlet Crescent ruins. The ancient defences scatter the expedition, leaving Spirit Circle without much of its original group and placing Paul under a commander far stronger than himself. He uses Soul Whip to render dozens of giant swamp monsters unconscious, but recognises the Naraku Type 2 Maze Lock and understands that brute force will not give him control of the ruins. When Cybel attacks Leylin's side, Paul withdraws rather than challenge the stronger Warlock. (Chapters 526 and 530)

He eventually escapes through a spatial crack near the world's border. Spirit Circle loses Blair and another Morning Star, while Leylin emerges with treasures from the ruins. Paul contacts him from safety, openly envies the Scarlet Earring, and converts disappointment into a proposed trade instead of reopening a battle he cannot profitably win. (Chapter 533)

Trading lesson and contract

Paul meets Leylin in the protected Morning Star trading area through a giant steel puppet controlled by a thread of soul force. He explains the teleportation network and private market, then invites Leylin to his castle. There he attempts to use Leylin's inexperience with this closed economy to preserve a favourable bargain. Leylin notices the withheld information, consumes Paul's rare rainbow juice and jewelled meat, and forces the exchange back toward fair value. Paul is frustrated by the loss but comes away respecting an intelligence equal to his own calculating instincts. (Chapters 534–536)

That respect becomes practical cooperation. Paul signs a paid contract to protect the Ouroboros Clan while its elders and Leylin are absent in the Lava World. When the expedition returns, he and Philip receive additional compensation. Their greatest contribution to the clan's territorial recovery is deterrence: their presence signals that attacking the Ouroboros forces risks broadening the conflict into a confrontation with other Morning Star organisations. Paul fulfils the agreed term, witnesses Leylin's newly increased power, and departs after the reclaimed territory is secure. (Chapters 542 and 578–582)

Appearance and personality

Paul's head resembles that of a giant octopus. Numerous tentacles cover his face, and his small, pupil-less eyes look like those of a dead fish. His nonhuman features are expressive: the tentacles droop when he is dejected and move with his conversational gestures. In the Morning Star trading area he operates through a giant steel puppet rather than displaying his physical body. (Chapters 509, 526, and 534)

He is sociable without being guileless. Paul uses humour and hospitality to make negotiations comfortable, but watches strength, status, and price closely. He avoids ruinous fights, tries to gain an informational advantage in trade, and accepts defeat in bargaining once Leylin exposes it. His caution does not make him unreliable: he honours the Ouroboros protection contract, and his later assessment of Leylin mixes wariness with sincere respect. (Chapters 509–512, 526, 533–536, and 542–582)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Spirit-sucking Oddity inheritance

Spirit Circle's lineage originated when an early Warlock fused the abilities of a Spirit-sucking Oddity into his own bloodline. The creature was not naturally a bloodline species: it possessed a strange spirit body, consumed the brain matter of intelligent beings, and could peer into spirits. The artificial inheritance passed those traits to a branch known as Spirit Warlocks, who specialise in mental attacks that ordinary opponents find difficult to resist. (Chapter 509)

Paul demonstrates the inheritance subtly when Leylin looks into his pupil-less eyes. The contact gives Leylin the sensation that his heart and secrets are being stripped bare. Leylin counters with the point mass and soul force in his sea of consciousness, so the gaze does not become unrestricted mind-reading. The encounter shows both the method and its limit: Paul's perception presses directly against the target's spirit, but sufficiently concentrated soul force can detect and resist that pressure. (Chapter 509)

Soul Whip and implanted mental influence

Soul Whip releases massive invisible waves that strike the mind rather than visibly wounding the body. Against dozens of giant swamp monsters, it makes them tremble as if tortured, collapse unconscious, and retain expressions of fear. Its area effect allows Paul to disable a group without fighting every creature physically, though the corpus does not show it defeating another Morning Star in a direct contest. (Chapter 526)

Paul also teaches secret Spirit Warlock methods that work more gradually. Leylin later uses a spiritual-force intent planted deep in a mind to produce hypnosis and forgetting without leaving the victim aware that anything is wrong. He also credits Paul's techniques with helping him recognise and resist the Arctic Queen's psychological suggestions. These later applications establish that Paul's expertise covers both offensive conditioning and mental defence, but they are Leylin's use of instruction received from Paul rather than separate scenes in which Paul casts the techniques himself. Morning Star soul force

As a Morning Star, Paul can use soul force directly and enter systems restricted to beings of his rank. In the private trading area, a thread of that force controls a giant steel puppet as his remote body. This lets him speak, move, host guests, and conduct transactions without bringing his physical body to the meeting space. The projection depends on both the puppet and the protected area's network; it is not evidence that Paul can create steel bodies unaided in ordinary combat. (Chapters 534–536)

Rank and combat limits

Paul is powerful enough to serve as one of Spirit Circle's leading Morning Stars, overwhelm ordinary monsters with mental force, and lend meaningful deterrence to an allied clan. The Scarlet Crescent expedition also fixes his limits. Cybel's strength and the ruins' ancient formations exceed him, his organisation suffers losses after the party is dispersed, and survival requires retreat through a spatial crack. Paul consistently compensates for this gap through alliances, information, and selective engagement. (Chapters 526, 530, 533, and 578–582)

Relationships

• Leylin Farlier: Paul first assesses and recruits him, then becomes guide, trading partner, teacher, and contracted ally. Failed attempts to probe or out-bargain Leylin lead to caution and genuine respect rather than lasting hostility.
• Philip: Paul's regular diplomatic partner. They represent allied Warlock organisations together and share the Ouroboros protection contract.
• Cybel: The commander Paul follows inside Scarlet Crescent. Their equal formal rank does not imply equal power; Paul recognises that defying Cybel in the ruins would be fatal.
• Spirit Circle: Paul's inherited lineage and political base. Its losses in Scarlet Crescent explain both his frustration and his interest in converting Leylin's success into trade.
• Emma: A fellow Warlock leader present during the political and military recovery of Ouroboros territory.

Items

• Giant steel puppet: A remotely controlled shell through which Paul appears in the Morning Star trading area. A thread of his soul force animates it, while the surrounding network makes the remote meeting possible. (Chapters 534–536)
