Nick (warhorse)
Biography
Rafiniya's mount
Nick is the name Old Pam casually gives Rafiniya's black warhorse. This animal is distinct from the several people and disguises called Nick elsewhere in the corpus. Rafiniya treats horse and knight as one fighting unit: reins, balance, and the mount's practiced response let her cross a disordered caravan faster than a fighter on foot and attempt dangerous passes through ogre lines. Nick can accelerate like a black whirlwind even while carrying additional weight, but the rider chooses the route and attack. (Chapters 861 and 863)
Stolen and reclaimed
During the caravan's collapse, an archer takes Nick and abandons the others to flee. Leylin Farlier kills the thief, catches the reins, and finds the trained horse willing to accept another competent rider rather than resisting amid the battle. Nick's speed then brings Leylin back toward Rafiniya's endangered group. Leylin turns the recovery into a transaction and demands payment before formally recognizing her ownership again; this change in handlers is a human dispute, not evidence that the horse chose a new master. (Chapter 866)
Companion in the north
Nick resumes traveling beneath Rafiniya and reaches the imperial capital after the party leaves the ogre region. The horse later accompanies her into the northern campaign and through the Nether Mountains, continuing to provide mobility over journeys that exhaust ordinary travelers. The last appearances preserve Nick as a working military mount rather than transforming the horse into a magical companion or independent combatant. (Chapters 871–873 and 907–909)
Appearance and personality
Nick is a handsome black warhorse, spirited and exceptionally fast. The horse readily accepts different riders and appears more concerned with reins, terrain, and immediate handling than human claims of ownership.
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Speed, endurance, and load
Nick has the strength and endurance of a well-bred warhorse. The horse can carry a fully equipped knight, accept more than one rider when necessary, and sustain travel over caravan roads and military routes. Short bursts are described as a black whirlwind, but the corpus supplies no supernatural speed, bloodline, or spell enhancement. Long-distance performance still depends on rest, feed, and ordinary horse care. (Chapters 861–873)
Warhorse training
The mount responds quickly to reins, changes riders without panicking, and can gallop through a collapsing formation. Under Rafiniya's guidance it helps leap or maneuver around ogres, making mounted momentum part of her knightly combat. Those feats arise from the combination of animal training and rider skill: Nick is not shown choosing targets, casting magic, or defeating an ogre independently. (Chapters 863 and 866)
Tack and practical limits
Saddle, reins, and ordinary riding tack make the horse controllable under load. No magical barding, enchanted horseshoes, or unique artifact is identified. Nick's willingness to accept the fleeing archer and then Leylin also shows a limit to treating the bond with Rafiniya as supernatural loyalty; the horse responds to immediate handling and circumstances. (Chapter 866)
