Ling

Ling is a princess of the Shadow Empire and the daughter most trusted by Emperor Aragon. She administers the preparations meant to free the royal family from Shar, commands the empire's final security response, and pilots its ultimate armored weapon. Her obedience persists even after she understands that her father's plan will consume the people she is supposed to protect.

Biography

The emperor's confidante

Ling participates in Aragon's private planning for modified versions of Project X and the Tree of Life. She sees the fervor with which he treats the plan and is frightened by the increasingly obsessive man behind the emperor's controlled exterior. Although she warns that abruptly changing the projects could be dangerous, Aragon dismisses the concern and frames the gamble as the royal family's chance to escape its ancient master. Ling obeys, occupying the painful space between a daughter who remembers her father and an official who can see what his ambition is becoming. (Chapters 1091 and 1094)

The twelfth sacrifice

Ling orders the Special Forces to secure Jill after testing identifies the girl as the final compatible subject. Jill's unusually pure soul can endure the eye array and converter well enough to serve as one of twelve transfer nodes. Those children are intended to absorb and purify the madness generated when Aragon takes control of the being formed by the Tree of Life, regardless of whether their souls survive the pressure. Ling reports the completed foundation to her father and receives his praise, but the scene makes her an active administrator of the project's human cost rather than a distant observer. Imperial collapse

After catastrophic destruction strikes the capital, Aragon instructs Ling to leak information to the rebels so they will distract Shar while the alternate Tree of Life is completed. Ling complies after hesitating, then surveys millions of displaced people and privately wonders whether the empire's road ends in darkness or dawn. When the Bloodline Alliance prepares to attack the palace, she arrives in military uniform with intelligence from Javis. Aragon activates both projects, places the Special Forces, intelligence service, and other elites under Ling, and orders her to release the final X mutation. Her body trembles at an instruction she knows is equivalent to unleashing devils, but she again carries it out. (Chapters 1097–1099)

Dawn's last defence

As the rebels reach the Imperial Garden, Ling deploys Dawn, the empire's last technological trump card. From its control room she blocks an attack beyond the empire's normal energy limit, then fights Crowley's chimeric form so that the Tree of Life can activate. Once the mechanism begins drawing souls first from people altered by the X gene and eventually from every thinking being, Ling explains the process without pretending escape is possible. She calls her participation fate, acknowledges that her ordinary body cannot continue resisting the Tree's pull, and issues Dawn's self-destruct order. The armor seizes Crowley and concentrates the blast into a small area around him. Ling dies remembering Aragon pushing her childhood swing; Crowley regenerates, so her final sacrifice delays rather than defeats the rebellion. (Chapters 1101–1103)

Appearance and personality

Ling appears in military uniform when reporting the assault on the palace. She is controlled enough to hide most of her emotions in court, yet fear, hesitation, a single tear over the capital, and her final memories reveal how much the imperial role costs her.

She is intelligent, technically informed, and an effective organizer, but her defining trait is tragic loyalty. Ling understands the machinery of Project X well enough to know whom it will kill and sees that Aragon has become frighteningly obsessed. Nevertheless, filial attachment, royal duty, and fatalism keep her executing his commands. Her last act is neither ignorance nor personal bloodlust: it is a conscious choice to defend her father and empire even when she expects no future for herself. (Chapters 1091–1102)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Administration, intelligence, and command

Ling can coordinate research results, evaluate compatibility data, direct the Special Forces, and synchronize the empire's intelligence and elite units. She turns multiple institutions into an ordered defensive machine during the palace crisis and understands the sequence by which Project X feeds the Tree of Life. These are command authority and technical knowledge granted by her position. The personnel, laboratories, surveillance, and military network remain institutional resources rather than personal supernatural abilities. (Chapters 1094 and 1097–1099)

Dawn piloting

Ling is capable of operating Dawn from an internal control room during combat. The armor's furnace interacts with the Shadow Weave strongly enough to still the surrounding network, while its main beam can contest Crowley's black-hole-like attack and destroy much of the palace through the collision. It can also form a light sword described as cutting through space and use its armored body to grapple a much larger transformed opponent. The precision with which Ling blocks, separates, re-engages, and finally restrains Crowley shows active combat control, but every destructive effect originates from Dawn's systems and energy supply, not Ling's flesh. Ordinary physique and dependence on external systems

Ling explicitly describes herself as having an ordinary physique. She displays no personal spellcasting, bloodline transformation, or X-gene combat ability. Dawn, the Shadow Weave, Project X, the Tree of Life, the palace defenses, and the troops under her command are all external systems. This distinction defines her limit: when the Tree begins pulling on souls, its roots penetrate her through the armor and she coughs blood, unable to resist directly. Her only remaining option is to command the machine's self-destruction, which focuses its force on Crowley but kills its pilot. (Chapter 1102)

Relationships

• Aragon: Ling's father, emperor, and commanding authority. She fears his obsession and questions his plan, yet remains loyal through her death; her final memory is of his gentler presence in childhood.
• Jill: The twelfth pure-souled child Ling has seized for the Tree of Life's refining array. Jill embodies the innocent cost Ling understands but does not prevent.
• Javis: Imperial officer who follows Ling and supplies intelligence about the rebel attack. She dismisses him before entering the royal family's inner proceedings.
• Crowley: Rebel leader whom Ling holds away from the Tree of Life with Dawn and targets with her final self-destruction.
