James

Biography

Organising the Earth Dragon hunt

James serves as Jenny's butler, adviser, and resident acolyte during her attempt to obtain a Dragon-Blooded Flower Bud. He investigates Leylin Farlier and correctly reasons that Leylin may be concealing the strength of an official Magus, while admitting that a level 3 acolyte cannot pierce that concealment. During the hunt, James identifies the Goat-Horned Earth Dragon's tracks, orders a blood-based lure outside its cave, and times the party's attack so that the flower inside will not be damaged. (Chapters 299–301)

The dragon is stronger than a level 3 acolyte could defeat alone. James therefore combines preparation with group force: a specially brewed bacterial solution weakens its skin, Mostar Corrosive Ball strips away much of its outer defence, and the mercenaries exploit the opening. Leylin still has to intervene when the creature breaks through and threatens Jenny. James's contribution is decisive support, not a solo victory. (Chapters 301–302)

Ambush and continued escort

Jenny's relatives then send an opposing level 3 acolyte to attack the party. The enemy's raw strength is described as comparable to James's, though James possesses a magic artifact and the attacker does not; even so, James is gravely wounded. Leylin treats him, and James thereafter relies openly on the protection of an official Magus while the group continues toward the eastern capital. (Chapters 303–309)

Death in the Weeping Ghost Grounds

Inside the Weeping Ghost Grounds, James recognises a crying voice as that of his beloved Marsha. He rushes toward the woman despite the party's caution. Her face is a black vortex rather than a human face, and it stretches and draws James inside before Leylin can intervene. After the distorted encounter ends, his body is gone; Leylin tells Jenny to prepare for his death. (Chapters 309–311)

Appearance and personality

James is an older man whose composed bearing allows strangers to mistake him for an ordinary butler until he casts. He is methodical about tracks, terrain, bait, and the limits of his own rank, and his service to Jenny remains his central priority. That caution has an emotional exception: the sound and likeness of Marsha overcome it so completely that he abandons the carriage in a known supernatural danger. (Chapters 299–301, 309–310)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Level 3 acolyte

James is a level 3 acolyte with enough energy control to cast offensive magic and sense comparable acolytes. He remains below an official Magus: he cannot see through Leylin's deliberate concealment, cannot defeat the Earth Dragon unaided, and is badly injured by an enemy at his own level. His rank makes him formidable beside mortal guards, not secure against the Twilight Zone's stronger creatures and phenomena. (Chapters 299, 301–304)

Mostar Corrosive Ball

Mostar Corrosive Ball creates a large blue projectile that bursts into liquid on contact. Against the Earth Dragon, it mixes with the pus produced by James's bacterial solution, releases heat, corrodes flesh, and removes much of the creature's skin and scales. The combined effect also slows the dragon enough for ordinary weapons to wound it. The spell's strongest recorded result depends on prior chemical weakening; the text does not establish that it would breach the same defence by itself. (Chapter 301)

Tracking, detection, and preparation

James uses an unnamed handheld implement to probe a footprint, then confirms the creature through the number of toe joints and its smell. He also understands the dragon's low intelligence and sensitivity to blood, allowing him to build a simple lure with the expedition. These are investigative and planning abilities supported by tools, consumables, and helpers rather than a universal detection spell. (Chapters 300–301)

Relationships

  • Jenny: His young mistress, whom he advises and protects throughout the Earth Dragon expedition and journey toward the capital. (Chapters 299–311)
  • Baelin: Jenny's champion and James's travelling companion. James helps draw Baelin into the expedition and supports his attempt to gain Leylin as a teacher. (Chapters 299–303)
  • Leylin Farlier: The official Magus whose hidden power James investigates, then relies upon for healing and safe passage. (Chapters 299, 304–310)
  • Marsha: A woman James calls his beloved. A supernatural predator reproduces her voice or likeness closely enough to lure him to his death. (Chapters 309–310)

Items

  • Detection implement: An unnamed object used to probe the Earth Dragon's footprint. Its full range and operating method are not given. (Chapter 300)
  • High-energy bacterial solution: A preparation brewed specifically to lower the Goat-Horned Earth Dragon's epidermal defence; it is delivered through the expedition's bait and then exploited by James's spell. (Chapter 301)
  • Magic artifact: James is stated to possess one when compared with an enemy level 3 acolyte, but its name, form, and demonstrated function are not identified. (Chapter 303)
