Jackson

Jackson is the Grand Knight and ruling viscount of Extreme Night City. His expedition into the withering woods nearly ends in disaster, but Leylin Farlier saves his life and becomes a valued, if unsettling, ally.

Biography

Lord of Extreme Night City

Jackson rules Extreme Night City through both noble authority and the personal deterrence of a Grand Knight. He welcomes Magus Murphy and Leylin Farlier, then leads his Black Iron Guards into the withering woods when the city's security requires investigation. The expedition places him at the front rather than behind his soldiers, but a mutated Great Mankestre Snake kills the guards and overwhelms the mixed party. (Chapters 58–67)

Jackson uses an opening created by the acolytes' magic to cut a half-metre wound into the snake's neck, nearly reaching bone. Its counterattack crushes his breastplate, breaks multiple bones, and leaves him unconscious, while his frost greatsword shatters after channeling the attack. Leylin's treatment saves him and brings him back to the city, turning a formal acquaintance into a personal debt. (Chapters 67–68)

Recovery and alliance with Leylin

Jackson promptly transfers a warehouse of Hove Violet Leaves to Leylin as repayment. He then conceals the speed of his recovery, allowing reports of a mortal injury to draw hostile nobles and criminals into a coordinated move. Once they expose themselves, he arrests and executes them, restoring quiet to Extreme Night City. The deception shows that his political survival depends as much on controlled information as on physical force. (Chapters 68–71 and 77)

Jackson later uses his judicial authority to provide death-row prisoners for Leylin's experiments. Gratitude and the practical value of a powerful ally motivate the cooperation, but he does not surrender every limit: after emptying his jails and including lesser criminals, he explains that mass disappearances would exceed a viscount's lawful authority and provoke unrest unless war supplied cover. Their alliance therefore remains transactional and bounded by Jackson's need to preserve his rule. (Chapters 75–77)

Appearance and personality

Jackson is a burly middle-aged noble with a commanding presence. He mourns the destruction of his expedition, repays debts promptly, and shows considerable political cunning in turning news of his injury into a purge of hostile factions. (Chapters 58–77)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Jackson has no Magus spell system. His personal combat power comes from Grand Knight life energy and close-range weapon training, while his troops and legal powers belong to his office rather than his body.

Grand Knight physique and life energy

Repeated stimulation of internal life energy has carried Jackson beyond ordinary human limits, giving him exceptional strength, vitality, and slight resistance to rank 0 spells. His physical pressure is most dangerous at close range, where he can reach a spellcaster before a prepared incantation is completed. That advantage remains below official Magus power and does not make him resistant to the brute force of a mutated creature. (Chapter 58)

Against the Great Mankestre Snake, Jackson converts an opening created by frost magic into a greatsword blow that cuts almost half a metre into its neck. The achievement demonstrates both force and timing, but the counterattack caves in his armor and incapacitates him. His survival requires Leylin's medical treatment; Grand Knight vitality alone does not repair the crushed chest in battle. (Chapters 67–68)

Command and political control

Jackson commands the Black Iron Guards, an elite unit reputed to have defeated a five-hundred-person force with roughly one hundred soldiers. Their organization and his city troops extend his reach, but the snake expedition also shows the limit of conventional forces against supernatural threats: the guards are destroyed despite discipline and equipment. (Chapters 58 and 63–68)

As city lord, Jackson controls local investigation, punishment, stores, and death sentences. He uses false reports of incapacity to expose political enemies and then removes them in a rapid purge. This is strategic governance rather than magic, and his later refusal to make unlimited prisoners disappear demonstrates that ducal law and public reaction still constrain it. (Chapters 70 and 77)
