Murphy
Biography
A retired acolyte in Extreme Night City
Murphy is a level 3 wandering acolyte who has lived in Extreme Night City for three years after age and declining prospects end his serious pursuit of advancement. He turns his attention toward scholarship and local society, becoming influential enough to introduce Leylin Farlier to the city's supernatural circle and its ruler. He recognises Leylin as a young acolyte with unusual promise and helps him hire pharmacists, while Leylin visits Murphy for information and the companionship of another practitioner. (Chapters 57–59)
Investigating the withering woods
When a spreading blight threatens the region, Murphy examines a scale recovered by Fraser's scouts and identifies the culprit as a mutated organism rather than a valuable high-level creature. He is reluctant to join the expedition personally because he has forgotten much of his spell repertoire and risks a fatal spell-model error if he casts carelessly. Reassured by Viscount Jackson's presence, he spends two days concentrating until he can safely use two models and agrees to provide the scouting method needed at the woods' centre. (Chapters 63–65)
Murphy pours a black potion into the ground to reveal the path into the underground nest, then uses his books and experience to identify Flash Jellyfish and the immature Great Mankestre Snake. During the battle his rune shackles restrain the snake long enough for the others to attack, but the creature breaks free. The spell consumes so much spiritual force and magic power that Murphy becomes physically no stronger than an ordinary old man and cannot dodge the counterattack. Leylin saves him; every other acolyte in the expedition dies and Jackson is gravely wounded. (Chapters 65–68)
Trust after the expedition
The losses leave Murphy bleak and make the inadequacy of the retired acolytes' defences impossible to ignore. Because Leylin saves his life, Murphy discloses the exhaustion caused by rune shackles and trusts him more deeply. When Leylin later leaves Extreme Night City, Murphy witnesses the transfer of his businesses to Anna and publicly supports her authority alongside Jackson. His final material role is thus not renewed adventuring, but using scholarly and civic standing to protect the household of the younger acolyte who rescued him. (Chapters 68, 77, and 79–80)
Appearance and personality
Murphy is an elderly man whose body has visibly declined, often accompanied by servants or clutching a book. He is sociable, erudite, and capable of embarrassment, but his self-deprecating warnings about forgotten spells are grounded in real danger rather than cowardice. He still accepts responsibility when the city needs his expertise, and survival makes him openly grateful and trusting toward Leylin. (Chapters 57–68)
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Level 3 acolyte
Murphy is a level 3 acolyte rather than an official Magus. His measured spiritual force is 2.9 and magical power 8 when Leylin meets him, and his age has left his body and active repertoire in decline. He has accumulated more spells and survival experience than a newly arrived level 2 acolyte, but must reconstruct neglected models before dangerous use. A small mistake during formation could cause a lethal explosion, so rank alone does not make dormant knowledge immediately available. (Chapters 57 and 64)
Scholarship and creature identification
Books, a magnifying instrument, and long experience let Murphy distinguish a mutation from a high-value magical creature, estimate the strength of a parasite's parent, and recognise species inside the Mankestre nest. This knowledge prevents the party from misreading the immature snake as its much larger adult form. His identification is analytical support rather than a power that controls the creature, and surprise initially causes him to drop his book before Leylin corrects the age assessment. (Chapters 63 and 65–66)
Scouting potion
At the centre of the withering woods, Murphy pours a prepared black potion onto the ground to activate his scouting method and expose what lies beneath. The corpus establishes its use in locating the nest but does not explain its ingredients, range, or whether Murphy brewed it himself. It requires reaching the affected area's centre, which forces the vulnerable party into the danger zone before it can work. (Chapter 65)
Rune shackles
Murphy's principal demonstrated combat spell creates rune shackles capable of restraining the half-grown Great Mankestre Snake temporarily. The creature eventually tears free through brute force. Casting leaves Murphy's spiritual force and magic power greatly depleted, reducing him to the reactions of an ordinary old man and preventing him from dodging the next attack. It is therefore effective battlefield control with a severe exhaustion cost and inadequate durability against an official-Magus-level organism. (Chapters 67–68)
Sound-isolation membrane
Murphy can create a faint energy membrane that blocks noise around a room. This is a minor utility spell used for privacy, not a demonstrated defensive barrier. (Chapter 58)
