Desmund

Biography

Defender of the light Magi

Desmund arrives after Reynold's death to prevent the Four Seasons Garden position from collapsing. He repairs the damaged defensive formation, adds another seal to its core consciousness, and organizes a crisis team rather than trusting the compromised local command. Dark Magi then threaten the Lightning Region entrance controlled by his own academy, forcing him to divide attention between alliance strategy and the territory for which he is directly responsible. When he returns to the secret plane, old rivalry with Cabourn becomes a rank 2 duel whose tornado destroys buildings and lesser combatants around them. (Chapters 250–265)

Alliance against Leylin

After Leylin Farlier advances to rank 2 and destroys the entrance core, Desmund decides the new Magus is a greater danger than Cabourn and joins his former enemy. Toxic Bile spreads invisibly through both factions, killing the Lightning Corps despite ordinary protective layers. Desmund repeatedly flushes his body with lightning, retreats from the densest poison, and amputates his corrupted right arm rather than let the toxin spread. He seals the wound and continues fighting, but the loss, poison, and collapse of his corps leave him unable to survive Leylin's final attack. (Chapters 266–268)

Appearance and personality

Desmund is a sturdy, muscular blond man who wears a blue robe open over his chest. A blue lightning mark sits on his forehead, and electricity flickers in his eyes. Beneath his forceful exterior he is observant, politically practical, and fiercely attached to the elite corps under his command. (Chapters 250–268)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Lightning combat

Desmund is a rank 2 lightning specialist who condenses electricity into a pike and can unleash Thunder Tempest over a broad combat zone. His lightning supplies speed, penetration, and area pressure sufficient to contest Cabourn and produce a destructive tornado during their exchange. The pike is formed from summoned energy rather than identified as a carried artifact. (Chapters 250 and 263–268)

Cleansing and wound control

He circulates repeated bursts of lightning through his own body to purge Leylin's neurotoxin. This slows the poison but does not neutralize unlimited exposure: Toxic Bile continues spreading, penetrates ordinary protection, and forces Desmund to retreat. When one arm is irrecoverably contaminated, he amputates it and cauterizes or seals the wound with lightning so that he can continue fighting. The technique is emergency containment, not immunity. (Chapters 266–267)

Formation expertise and command

Desmund can repair the Four Seasons Garden's large defensive network and add a seal strong enough that multiple authorized Magi are needed to undo it. He also commands the Lightning Corps and crisis team. The formation's stored power and the corps' attacks expand his strategic reach, but both are institutional resources; their destruction does not erase his personal rank 2 lightning, though it removes the support on which his battlefield plan depends. (Chapters 250–259 and 263–268)

Items

No individually named possession is attributed to Desmund. His lightning pike is a weapon formed directly from summoned lightning rather than a stated carried artifact. (Chapters 265–268)
