Biography

Butcher of Port Elias

Bayclark is a Beholder Elder Eye whose eye collection and cruelty have earned him the name Eye-Gouging Butcher. He brings a large Trial's Eye force against Port Elias after the previous operation is exposed, intending to crush the local followers of the Nefarious Filthbird. As a rank 5 Sacrificer he can personally overwhelm the rank 4 governor, yet he treats the assault as entertainment: he assigns lower-ranked experts and marine beasts to the field and makes “Nick,” Leylin Farlier's disguise, prove his loyalty under observation. Captured by dreamforce

Leylin secretly uses dreamforce to disrupt Bayclark's battle and then confronts him through an armored fog giant that conceals the attacker's identity. Bayclark wraps opponents in radiating soul force, draws golden lightning and Trialpower from his dignitary, and immediately escalates to True Eye of the Evil Monarch: Death Ray. The combined ray has the force of a rank 5 killing move, but Leylin bends its apparent distance and prevents it from reaching him. Splendid Lunar Illusion then attacks Bayclark's perception and will; all three vertical eyes are sealed before the Beholder can call down a more dangerous intelligent clone of the Trial's Eye. Sacrifice to the Filthbird

Leylin carries the bound Bayclark to an isolated moving island and sacrifices him to the Nefarious Filthbird, the Trial's Eye's enemy. The array's grey flame becomes scarlet as it melts the Beholder and corrodes his truesoul; his remaining substance is condensed into the vessel of a small grey bird. Losing a regional rank 5 is disastrous for the Trial's Eye organization, but because Bayclark cannot return to explain the defeat, its surviving leaders redirect responsibility toward Belinda. Appearance and personality

Bayclark is a huge Elder Eye with three vertical pupils, white tendrils, and a taste for collecting unusual eyes. He is sadistic, pious, arrogant, and fond of watching subordinates struggle.

Elder Eye body and death rays

Bayclark's Beholder nature gives him three vertical eyes, tendrils, broad soul-force perception, and innate ocular attacks. True Eye of the Evil Monarch: Death Ray concentrates those traits into his strongest demonstrated ray. The attack can be reinforced by golden Trialpower until it is comparable to a rank 5 killing move, but it remains directional: Leylin's spatial-perceptual distortion keeps the ray from crossing the final distance, and sealing Bayclark's eyes disables its source. (Chapters 714–718)

Sacrificer power

His rank 5 Sacrificer path lets him borrow a small amount of law power from the Trial's Eye. It manifests as golden lightning, Trialpower, and a phantom of the dignitary, supplementing the rank 4 foundation of his species. This borrowed authority makes Bayclark stronger than an ordinary rank 5, but it is patron-derived rather than an innate Beholder evolution. The possibility of summoning an intelligent dignitary clone is discussed as a danger; Bayclark is captured before he demonstrates one. (Chapters 717–720)

Command resources and limits

Marine beasts, lower-ranked Sacrificers, and the golden octopus mount answer Bayclark because he leads the expedition. They are troops and transport, not summoned extensions of his body. His arrogance also imposes a practical limit: he assumes an unidentified sub-rank-5 opponent can be eliminated quickly, commits his greatest ray at once, and gives Leylin the predictable attack needed to control the exchange. (Chapters 713–718)
