Grudgekeeper

Grudgekeeper is the shared name of two matched Origin-metal daggers forged for Soron as the Cult of Ascension's answer to divine enemies. The pair is separated during Soron's last battle, follows two distinct custody paths, and is ultimately reunited under Leo.

History

Forging in Argo's Soulspace

Supreme Master Argo and his apprentices shape a single block of Origin Metal through the Soul Forge, where emotion, soul power, and remaining lifespan substitute for ordinary heat. Soron's specifications call for two mirrored, slightly curved double-edged blades, each with a thirty-three-centimeter blade and eleven-centimeter handle, weighted toward the belly but balanced one-third of the way from the hilt. The process ages every smith involved and kills Argo after the final tempering, making the completed pair both his last masterpiece and a collective Cult sacrifice. (Chapter 812)

Argo names the pair Grudgekeeper and entrusts it to Soron with the hope that it will avenge the Cult's dead. Soron treats the blades as a legacy that must survive him, not disposable equipment. Although their Origin-metal edges could threaten Gods, he withholds them during much of the Pit battle because he fears their capture and intends, if possible, to pass them to Leo rather than leave both among his enemies. Separation at the Pit

Soron splits the set as part of his final strategy. After forcing Helmuth through a Fourth-Dimensional portal, he throws one Grudgekeeper dagger after him, gambling that Moltherak will defeat Helmuth and someday deliver the weapon to Leo. Soron retains the other blade, uses it to inflict permanent Origin wounds on Kaelith and Mu Shen, and dies with it beside him. Mauriss immediately seizes that remaining dagger and defeats the other Gods' attempt to take it away. (Chapters 964 and 967–969)

The two halves then travel separately. Moltherak eventually gives the dagger thrown into the Fourth Dimension to Leo, who recognizes the transfer as repayment of the Dragon's debt to Soron and stores it as a strategic God-killing asset. Mauriss keeps the dagger stolen from Soron's body, uses it against divine opponents, and later supplies it as the mutually chosen weapon in his game with Leo; Leo cuts off his own finger with that half before returning it to Mauriss. Recovered weapon of the new order

Leo carries his half into the war against Kaelith. The dagger's presence changes Kaelith's behavior before it lands a blow, and Leo later cuts the God across the torso, producing the permanent pain and failed regeneration associated with Origin Metal. This use fulfills Soron's intention that a successor wield Grudgekeeper against the old divine order, although the blade itself does not guarantee victory and still requires Leo to create an opening. After Mauriss is killed during the final conflict, Leo retrieves the second Grudgekeeper dagger from beside his corpse. The recovery removes the New Age Alliance's last Origin-metal leverage against him and reunites both halves under the person Soron had selected. Leo is subsequently shown carrying Grudgekeeper after hunting down Lu Han, establishing his possession as the latest state in the supplied corpus. (Chapters 1194 and 1196)

Abilities and properties

• Each dagger is a slightly curved, double-edged Origin-metal weapon with a thirty-three-centimeter blade, an eleven-centimeter handle, a balance point one-third from the hilt, and weight concentrated toward the blade's belly. Argo forges the edges with the intended fineness to cut flesh and dimensions, while retaining enough hilt control for rapid redirection. (Chapter 812)
• Origin Metal defeats ordinary regeneration and poisons damaged tissue. Soron's cuts leave Kaelith with deep permanent damage and cause Mu Shen's regeneration to fail; Leo's later strike makes Kaelith expect pain that would have persisted indefinitely had he survived. These are observed effects, not merely Soron's warning. (Chapters 945, 967, and 1157)
• The weapon is dangerous to mortal handlers as well as Gods. After Leo deliberately severs a finger with Mauriss's half, Origin contamination kills the severed tissue, spreads into the wound, and prevents reattachment. Mauriss estimates that a mortal so wounded has roughly thirty days without ascension and that even a later breakthrough would not erase periodic pain. (Chapters 1079–1082)
• Grudgekeeper supplies an exceptional cutting medium rather than automatic accuracy or victory. Ru Vassa avoids Mauriss's attempted decapitation by shifting into higher geometry, and Leo wounds Kaelith only after coordinated pressure creates an opening. A capable opponent can therefore evade the edge even though a landed cut has lasting consequences. (Chapters 999 and 1156–1157)
• The pair's symbolic force comes from its Soul Forge creation and name, but the corpus does not demonstrate an independent consciousness or an autonomous grievance-based power. Its measurable advantages remain its Origin-metal edge, resistance to divine healing, and value as political and military leverage. (Chapters 812, 891, 969, and 993)
