General Marshall

General Marshall is a black dragonkin commander of the Burlish Resistance Army. He seeks Dominic Wavemates's help reclaiming northeastern Burlish from monsters and secures a trade that exchanges recovered spell gems for food, clothing, and weapons.

Biography

Securing the Burlish Resistance's supply line

Marshall reaches Wistover in combat form after sending agents across the continent to find a surviving Royal dragonkin. His nominal army is a mixed community of displaced humans, Sorcerers, Giants, and Mountain Trolls trying to reclaim ancestral territory where monsters have destroyed the cities, farming is dangerous, and master smiths are scarce. Rather than asking for charity, he offers monster cores and rare or obsolete spell gems. That position allows Dominic to move from suspicion of a foreign army to a large trade agreement supplying food, clothing, and weapons without committing Cygnia to Marshall's war. (Chapters 672–675)

Marshall then evaluates Wistover's weapons, shops for durable supplies, and uses a linked portal stone to return directly to his people despite Burlish's dangerous portal conditions. He distributes rifles to officers while letting other fighters choose upgraded weapons suited to their established battlefield roles, then collects spell gems as payment and reserves tonnes of food against future crop failure. The exchange does not retake Burlish immediately, but it gives the Resistance a renewable supply line and Wistover a source of lost magic, materially improving Marshall's ability to hold and reclaim territory. (Chapters 676–681)

Appearance and personality

Marshall is a heavy black dragonkin with claws, horns, and large wings better suited to gliding than sustained flight. He normally remains in a visibly draconic combat form and stands out even where nonhumans are accepted. His own people consider him half-feral and usually taciturn, but in Wistover he is polite, curious, unexpectedly talkative, and nearly giddy over useful weapons. (Chapters 672–676 and 680–681)

Magic, skills, and craft

Marshall uses Wings of Light to supplement his natural gliding. At low level the spell is slow and effortful, while higher levels approach effortless, fast flight; on him it overlays white feathers across black wings, making subtle movement impossible. He also understands Dark Iron, storage items, linked portal stones, recovered spell gems, and magitech weapon features. His most important combat skill is tactical intuition: the Resistance regards his sense for danger, ambushes, and monster tactics as unmatched even when ordinary speech and social interaction are not his strengths. (Chapters 675–681)

Relationships

  • Dominic Wavemates: Marshall seeks Dominic as a Royal dragonkin weaponsmith and negotiates a continuing spell-gem trade that supplies the Resistance without placing it under Wistover's rule. (Chapters 672–681)
  • John Mackay: Marshall recognizes John through his resemblance to his father and initially fears he has come to collect a bounty, exposing Marshall's history as a wanted fighter. (Chapter 674)
  • The Burlish Resistance Army: Marshall commands the mixed community, plans its battles, allocates scarce weapons, and makes food security part of its campaign to reclaim northeastern Burlish. (Chapters 672–681)

Items

  • Mana Revolvers and rifles: Marshall buys magitech firearms for the Resistance, reserving the rifles for officers while other fighters select weapons matching their roles. (Chapters 676 and 681)
  • Wings of Light spell gems: Marshall trades copies of this flight spell and uses the spell himself to overcome the limits of his heavy body and gliding wings. (Chapters 675 and 677)
  • Linked portal stone and storage item: The stone gives Wistover's mages a precise destination near Marshall's people, while his storage holds large quantities of food and supplies. (Chapters 680–681)
