John Mackay

John Mackay is a former Wavemates royal assassin who returns to his old allegiance after Dominic Wavemates restores the Duchy. He outwardly settles as a sheep farmer, but his vigilance, concealment, and readiness to defend the manor preserve the duties of a King's Man beneath an ordinary rural life.

Biography

Returning to Wavemates

John meets Dominic among the ranchers resettling Wistover and identifies himself as a friend of Dominic's uncle. Work abroad kept him from returning during the invasion, a failure he still frames as an unfulfilled duty. He and his wife move their large sheep flock to the restored Duchy when they hear that the family has returned, choosing a territory where neither must hide inherited magic. His signed declaration that “King's Man Number 1 has returned” establishes that the farm is also a deliberate resumption of service. (Chapter 260)

The new life serves both household and region. John's flock supplies wool, he joins Dominic and the Sheriff when gunfire threatens the settlement, and he accepts a repaired magitech rifle so he can deter predators and watch the estate while its rulers travel. His animal work does not erase his former profession; it gives a covert protector a sustainable place in the community he failed to reach during Wavemates's fall. (Chapters 261, 282, and 288)

The unseen household guard

Years later, John is explicitly remembered as a Wavemates Royal Assassin. When General Marshall arrives with giants, trolls, and a transformed dragonkin, John waits at a distance where Dominic can barely see him, prepared to intervene if the visitors turn hostile. He then enters the manor grounds without anyone noticing and joins the discussion from inside the security perimeter. The sequence confirms that his pastoral cover coexists with active stealth and protection rather than representing a complete retirement. (Chapters 672–673)

Appearance and personality

The corpus gives no detailed account of John's face, build, hair, or clothing. He passes as an ordinary sheep farmer closely enough that his prior role is not visually obvious, and he carries himself without demanding status despite his old connection to the royal family. His regret over missing the invasion, eagerness to return, and unobtrusive response to danger present him as loyal, restrained, and more comfortable proving duty through readiness than ceremony. (Chapters 260, 288, and 672–673)

Magic, skills, and craft

John says that he and his wife both possess some magic, although his own talent is not suited to farming and the corpus does not name its type or formal rank. His demonstrated specialist abilities are observation, concealment, and protective positioning: he detects potentially hostile visitors early, remains barely visible while covering the approach, and enters the occupied manor without attracting notice. These acts support his former assassin identity, but the text does not supply a complete technique list or narrated advancement sequence. (Chapters 260 and 672–673)

He is also a competent rancher and field defender. The flock is large enough to matter to Wistover's wool supply, and he can use a bow and a lever-action magitech rifle. His wife has the stronger animal affinity, while John combines ordinary husbandry with the weapons and alertness needed to protect livestock on a frontier estate. (Chapters 260, 282, and 288)

Relationships

  • Dominic Wavemates: John transfers an old oath of service to the restored heir, supports the Duchy as a farmer, and quietly resumes the King's Man's protective function. (Chapters 260, 288, and 672–673)
  • Sheriff Nate: The two dragon-blooded Wavemates survivors reinforce local security in different ways: Nate openly enforces the law, while John can observe and intervene without being noticed. (Chapters 261 and 673)
  • John's wife: Her ranching background and natural affinity with animals support their sheep farm; moving to Wistover allows both partners to use magic without Dagos persecution. (Chapter 260)

Items

  • Repaired magitech rifle: Dominic gives John a restored lever-action rifle and lead shot for predator control and estate defense. John already owns an orb capable of creating lead shot, so the repaired weapon can remain supplied. (Chapter 288)
