Alistair
Alistair is a Mage Lord of the Capital Academy whose specialty is magitech theory. Sent to Wistover to advise on its portal array and magical development, he becomes both a technical specialist and a senior administrator in Dominic Wavemates's expanding government.
Biography
Technical adviser in the Provinces
Alistair arrives expecting to help with portals and magitech, but Wistover's factories, infrastructure, and incomplete records broaden the assignment immediately. He requests blueprints, studies deployment notes, surveys the city, and helps upgrade outbuilding systems that require two qualified mages working together. His knowledge also turns strange evidence into strategic warning: after reading correspondence about a fugitive in the Beast Realms, he connects repeated portals with past monster incursions. The appointment consequently places an academy theorist inside both Wistover's development program and its investigation of an ongoing security threat. (Chapters 599–604 and 631–662)
Senior adviser and supervisor
Alistair's portal magic keeps Wistover connected to the Capital and supports large rituals, while his advisory work increasingly concerns governance. He helps identify old magical messages, triages political correspondence, recommends preparing for separatist agitation, and supervises new administrative workers until they are trained well enough for middle management. These decisions reduce Dominic's immediate workload and turn Alistair from a visiting technical expert into part of the Province's durable bureaucracy, though his latest role still combines magic with ordinary management rather than replacing one with the other. (Chapters 656–680 and 707–737)
Appearance and personality
Alistair wears mage robes and is treated as one of the older advisers; the corpus gives no further stable physical description. He is intellectually curious about unfamiliar magitech, quick to ask for plans and data, and willing to roll up his sleeves when records look suspicious. His humour can be irritable or dry, but he also plans patiently for future staffing and political risk. (Chapters 599–603, 601, 707, and 732–737)
Magic, skills, and craft
Alistair specializes in magitech theory and recognizes systems such as stone conduction, factory machinery, airship lift, and old message techniques. He can open portals directly to known public destinations such as palace gates and participates in a larger casting ritual by drawing surrounding energy while Dominic supplies mana. He also upgrades magical infrastructure, sometimes requiring a second suitably skilled adviser for two-person work. The corpus calls him Mage Lord and Archmage but gives no narrated level progression or exhaustive spell list. (Chapters 599–604, 638, 656, 671, and 680)
His non-casting skills include technical appraisal, pattern analysis, political triage, and personnel supervision. He traces suspicious questions across a map and proposes preserving false correspondence for later analysis rather than wasting urgent time deciphering it. These applications depend on records and collaborators; even his theories about the Beast Realms are reasoned conclusions from correspondence, not firsthand observation. (Chapters 632, 656–662, 707, and 727–737)
