Gordie

Gordie is the acolyte sent by Asmodain to assist Wistover. Although he advertises broad magical and device-making training in hopes of avoiding accounting, incomplete provincial records make bookkeeping, investigation, and policy analysis his central duties.

Biography

An acolyte assigned to administration

Gordie enters Alexis's service under his acolyte codename and immediately offers spell and device creation so he will not be trapped in accounting. Wistover's lack of reliable population, crime, and trade records defeats that hope: he is put to work organizing data, then applies tracing and monitoring magic to a suspected spy network and maps incidents by date for the senior advisers. The unwanted assignment reveals its value, because his combination of magical investigation and disciplined note-taking turns scattered reports into evidence the administration can examine. Provincial analyst

By the later provincial administration, Gordie is doing most of its bookkeeping and reporting Dominic's plans back to Asmodain. He scries for bandits and trouble, tracks refugee totals, evaluates the limits of Crown-land governance, and warns that intensive agriculture without nature magic will deplete soil. Although an intimidating new arrival briefly overwhelms him, Gordie remains the assistant capable of connecting demographic records, magical theory, food production, and security observations. The work he tried to avoid thus becomes his durable position and a major source of informed planning for the Provinces. (Chapters 721 and 740–742)

Appearance and personality

The corpus gives no stable physical description of Gordie. He is anxious about tedious paperwork and openly desperate to avoid it, yet he takes thorough notes once the work proves important. His reactions can be dramatic when magic or powerful people unsettle him, while his later conversations show practical humour and growing confidence in policy analysis. Magic, skills, and craft

Gordie says he is trained in many forms of magic, including creating new spells and devices. He understands Dimensional Shift, tracing spells, monitored-area surveillance, scrying, stone transmission, nature magic, and at least five methods of casting fireball. Directly demonstrated applications include tracing and monitoring suspects and scrying for bandits; his discussion of nature magic and multiple fireball methods establishes knowledge, not that every technique is shown in use. His work is constrained by missing records and by the need to interpret magical observations through administrative data. (Chapters 634–656 and 740–741)

Relationships

• Asmodain: Asmodain sends Gordie to Wistover, and Gordie continues making notes to report provincial plans back to him. (Chapters 721 and 740)
• Alexis: Alexis accepts Gordie's acolyte codename and places him within Wistover's service, where his hoped-for magical assignment quickly becomes administrative work. (Chapters 634–638)
