Viscount Boscom

Viscount Boscom, later crowned King Gustav, is the Dagos noble whose legitimate claim offers a path out of civil war after the old succession collapses. He gives up an earlier Royal role for a love marriage into House Boscom, then accepts the throne when rival Prince Kaizon's military control threatens both Dagos and its neighbours.

Biography

Burton, Dagos, and the Royal Marriage

Boscom enters the succession crisis as the eldest legitimate claimant not in enemy custody, but Kaizon argues that he lacks the influence and army to hold the throne. Boscom has an army and major city of his own, yet initially doubts whether Alexis and Dominic have authority to negotiate and admits that displacing Kaizon will take time. He nevertheless chooses an agreement: if he can secure a coronation, he will pursue an end to the war. That commitment prompts him to invite foreign Royals and makes him the central alternative around whom divided factions can unite. (Chapters 177–190)

Kaizon's magical duplicate then attacks the gathering, but Boscom identifies the Mimic spell and survives. Exhausted and aware that much of the army still answers to his rival, he focuses on assuring guests, hunting the apparent escape route, and accelerating the ceremony before Kaizon can strike again. At the rushed coronation, a Duke places the Dagos Royal Crown on Boscom's head, making him King Gustav. He gains the authority needed to negotiate peace, though another claimant and hostile northern nobles remain unresolved. (Chapters 194–202)

Refugees, Conspiracies, and Provincial Power

Gustav later appears under his royal name when regional rulers confront the consequences of war, storms, and Dagos's damaged territory. Reports show that Boscom and other north-central cities suffer severe storm damage but survive. The limited later evidence confirms continuity between Viscount Boscom and King Gustav, but does not supply enough detail to reconstruct every policy of his reign. (Chapters 548 and 606)

Appearance and personality

Boscom is a dark-haired man whose hair is greying by the coronation crisis. He scrutinizes negotiators intensely, straightens his coat when regaining composure, and shows fatigue after the assassination attempt. He is cautious about authority but, once committed, keeps his word and redirects attention toward the safety and legitimacy needed to end the war. (Chapters 181–195)

Magic, skills, and craft

Boscom recognizes a Mimic spell when Kaizon's apparent body proves false, but the corpus explicitly states that he did not study as a mage. His strengths are political legitimacy, command of a large army, and knowledge of Albroles Palace's escape systems. The spell recognition should therefore be treated as informed observation rather than proof that he casts the magic himself. (Chapters 180, 194–195, and 202)

Relationships

• Kaizon: Kaizon disputes Boscom's claim, controls much of the army, and repeatedly tries to prevent his coronation. Boscom becomes King by surviving that pressure and uniting enough rival factions. (Chapters 177–202)
• Alexis: Alexis preserves Boscom as a necessary negotiating partner, confronts his doubts, and helps secure the gathering in which his claim can be recognized. (Chapters 180–195)
• Dominic Wavemates: Dominic helps intercept Boscom without artillery, opens negotiations, and supports the security surrounding the coronation. (Chapters 180–202)
• House Boscom: Gustav previously stepped away from Royal duty for a love marriage into the Viscount Boscom family, taking the title by that union before the succession crisis returned him to royalty. (Chapter 181)
