Dark Witch

The Dark Witch is a scalekin ritualist encountered on Nevermore’s Tri-World floor, where she has spent centuries trying to remove a karmic plague from the planet.

Biography

Betrayal beneath Tri-World

The Witch arrived while pursuing outbreaks of the Karmic Plague and founded a fourth faction around curing Tri-World. The other three rulers pretended to assist, then sabotaged her ritual, attacked her while weakened, destroyed her capital, and sealed her Mimicry World Core behind living seals. She fled toward the planetary core and warped her own psyche to resist infection, preserving part of her purpose but losing coherent control of her mind. (Chapters 719–722)

Defeat, recovery, and completed ritual

Jake’s party entered her century-old domain and survived its hexes until the Fallen King disrupted the plague’s soul influence and restored her focus. Rather than kill her, they helped reconstruct the cleansing ritual, transferred the plague from the true core into its mimic, and protected her from the backlash. Dina treated her injuries, and the party left her alive with information that might help her depart Tri-World, although the character remains a Nevermore reconstruction who cannot follow participants out. (Chapters 722–725)

Appearance and personality

The Dark Witch first appears as a hunched, hooded scalekin with flayed robes and empty black eyes. Once lucid, she straightens her back, restores her clothing by magic, and speaks formally. Her corrupted state is erratic and terrified of plague bearers; her recovered self is apologetic, knowledgeable, grateful, and still committed to curing rather than ruling the planet.

Path, class, and abilities

  • Prepared dark domain: More than a century of runes lets her project spells from walls, weaken intruders, corrupt hostile rainclouds, and turn into black sludge to evade attacks. The domain is powerful but finite: its runes fade as spells and evasions consume stored energy.
  • Hexcraft: Semi-ethereal tendrils inflict sensory and behavioral distortions that are difficult to dispel. Targets with unusual Perception, cleansing, or soul abilities can resist them, and her plague-damaged mind prevents coordinated use of the toolkit.
  • Ritual and formation magic: She designs planetary-scale plague removal with the Mimicry World Core, creates one-way underground teleport points, and contributes extensive knowledge of karmic infection. The ritual requires rare ingredients, multiple assistants, and exposes its operator to severe backlash.
  • Karmic Plague limit: Her attempt to seal the plague away in her psyche leaves her partly insane and makes her target infected party members. The Fallen King can break the soul-linked influence, after which she again acts rationally.
  • Latest state: The Nevermore version survives, cured but still confined to its dungeon reality. The corpus does not confirm the condition of any original multiversal counterpart.

Relationships

  • Fallen King defeats her without killing her by disrupting the plague’s hold on her soul, changing her from hostile boss to ally.
  • Jake Thayne risks damage to his own Soulspace to keep her alive through the ritual rather than accepting her sacrifice.
  • Dina helps rebuild the ritual and later heals the Witch, reinforcing her hope that curing the planet is still possible.
