Azal

Azal is a Risen prodigy, a Ghost King recognized for both his combat talent and his service against the Holy Church. He leads the elite Risen party that takes Casper through Nevermore.

Biography

Nevermore and its cost

When Casper joins the Risen team, Azal is already its intimidating leader: the youngest Ghost King in a billion years and a candidate the Risen believe may eventually reach godhood. He accepts the newly evolved dungeon engineer without condescension, uses Casper’s analysis to drive an extremely fast floor clear, and personally kills their first boss within minutes. During the run he builds power through a self-made sword that absorbs defeated spirits, but at Nevermore’s end he destroys those accumulated resources in a prepared ritual to gain levels and place the Risen above the Holy Church. The choice damages both the weapon and his foundation, trading long-term security for factional honor. (Chapters 662, 711, 876, 880)

By the time he escorts Casper to the ceremony granting him the same title, Azal has repaired most of the damage with the Blightfather’s support. He expects the recovery to delay his advancement to B-grade but insists on rebuilding a flawless foundation. His conduct toward Casper also shows how their long partnership changed him from a forbidding commander into a stern friend: he challenges Casper’s self-doubt, treats his diplomatic achievements as earned merit, and urges him to stand proudly as a Ghost King. (Chapter 1167)

Appearance and personality

Azal is a tall Risen whose abyss-like eyes and dense blight energy make an immediate impression on Casper. At his latest appearance he carries a frightening-looking sword. He is serious, proud of the Risen, and willing to injure his own prospects for their prestige, yet his later encouragement of Casper reveals loyalty, fairness, and a dry capacity for humor beneath that severity.

Path, class, and abilities

  • Ghost King standing: The title recognizes a Risen below B-grade who has both exceptional potential and substantial merit. It is not a class or office with fixed duties, and Azal earned it through combat and tournaments against the Holy Church.
  • Spirit sword: Azal made a mythical sword after reaching C-grade. It can absorb spirits and souls, strengthen itself with them, and spend them as resources for certain skills. Its reservoir grows only through defeated spirits, making past victories part of his future combat power.
  • Sacrificial ritual: A prepared Nevermore ritual let him consume the sword’s entire stored reserve for rapid levels and ranking points. The exchange damaged the sword, his Records, and his foundation; repairing all three is expensive and delays evolution. By Chapter 1167 his foundation is mostly restored, but he is deliberately postponing B-grade until the repair is complete.
  • Combat level: Azal can eliminate early Nevermore bosses alone and contend with Minaga’s later phase as part of his party. The text establishes overwhelming blight-infused combat power, but does not name his class or provide a complete technique list.

Relationships

  • Casper: Azal begins as Casper’s imposing party leader, then becomes a friend over fifty years in Nevermore. He respects Casper’s dungeon engineering and later argues that Casper’s diplomacy and connection to Jake genuinely justify the Ghost King title.
  • The Blightfather: The Risen Primordial authorizes Azal’s title and later commits extensive resources to repairing the foundation Azal damaged for the faction’s honor.
  • The Holy Church: Azal’s rivalry with the Church shapes both his original recognition and his costly final Nevermore decision.
